Disclaimer: I'm from the Netherlands so I may be a bit biased. There is al lot evidence that smoking marijuana can trigger schizophrenia. It is not a cause but can act as a trigger in someone who is vulnerable for the disease, the problem is that we have no idea who is vulnerable.(exept for some very vague ideas) It also worsens the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, although a lot of schizophrenics use marijuana because it has a positive effect on the negative symptoms. Our Dutch weed has such hight THC levels that it can (must?) be considered as a hard drug. When they introduced the "gedoog beleid" they did not allow hash oil because of the high THC content. Through cultivation nederwiet has a higher content than hash oil.

  2. Ebola is overrated on 'Safe Ebola' Created for Research · · Score: 0

From an evolutionary viewpoint, Ebola is quite weak (at least in humans) It will kill you very soon and you'll start having severe symptoms after only a short period of time. Therefore it's very unlikely that ebola will ever become a 'danger' to humanity.

For a virus to be succesfull in humans it's very important not to kill your host. Ebola would be scary if it was as contagious as a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noro_virus for example.

  3. How we do it in the Netherlands(Europe) on Are TV Pharmaceutical Ads Damaging? · · Score: 0

In the Netherlands(in the rest of Europe as well) it's illegal to advertise prescription drugs. It's also illegal for any food company to put misleading claims on their products like Light Chips that contain 33% less fat while they're still stuffed with fat and sugar. I think that's the only way right way.

  4. Why should we bother making them? on Do Electric Sheep Dream of Civil Rights? · · Score: 0

Besides the question whether or not we will be able to build robots with real feelings en conscience, why should we? It will create problems like robot rights, while you don't have that problem with your computer or toaster. Just make them as dumb as possible, suitable for just one task and you'll never have to worry that your robot doesn't like what he(?)is doing. And it would not care(because it can't really care about anything) about being kicked (or abused in any other way...) either

Don't think it's that dangerous... The only reason we are alive today is because our immune system was (and is) capable of dealing with the pathogens (including viruses) of the past. We would not be here if we could not handle them :)

Although al little exercise does help when your having a depression (a clinical one, or when you have Dysthymia) it will not stop is dead. Depression is not the result of not having enough exercise. If that was the case there would be a whole lot more people with a depression.

I think that too much people think as of a depression to lightly. A depression is not knowing how you're going to get through the day when you wake up; feeling that you are hungry, but without the impuls to eat; not having fun in things you used to like(sports, sex, eating); not being able to deal with ordinary things (lability); realising that being run over by a car when you cross the road isn't so bad and much, much more.

Believe me, I've been there and without SSRI's I would not be here today. They do have a lot of side effects like loss of libido(although I do still enjoy it ;) ), gaining weight etc. But I'm very happy they are here! (without them I would not be able to feel happy at all, so it's a small price to pay) People should realize that feeling depressed and havind a depression are two things of a complete different magnitude
