Wow - I'm sitting in 90210 right now and my rates are Chrome: 3.5, Firefox, 3.1, IE, 3.1
Of course when I check to see where my IP resolves, it tells me I'm in Miami.
Whatever.
The vast majority of people that I know who have been taken in by fraud are trying to do something illegal or immoral when they are taken advantage of.
The Nigerian 419 scam only works with people willing to break the law - so the people who are taken in by the 419 scam are not 'innocent bystanders' they are amateur con men (and women) who got conned
Looking for sex on craigslist? Seriously - how is someone who got embarrassed trying to get a girl on a FREE service where you can post just about anything for sale (at least until it gets flagged) in any way a victim?
To use an old, albeit highly relevant, cliche: If you play with fire, you're going to get burned.
So you're claiming there are people here who never listen to the radio when there is a news broadcast, never watch any television station when there is a news broadcast, and never visit any website other than slashdot that contains news?
Sorry, even though parent has been modded "-1 Troll" I have to agree. While this does fall into the category of "Stuff that Matters" it is hardly "News for Nerds." There is probably not a single person here for whom Slashdot is their only source of news. This being said, I come to/. to read stories that I *don't* get on Drudge or my local news site.
When I fired up Firefox this morning my 3 tabs auto-opened. One of them is/. one of them is Drudge. I glanced at Drudge and then thought actually crossed my mind "I wonder if/. is going to have a story on the Castro thing." I decided nah - that's going to be over-reported everywhere else - they wouldn't bother.
I was wrong. It's not the first time. However, I think in this case/. was wrong also. The increasing inclusion of 'mainstream' news is definitely diluting the waters here.
I know I'm late to the party and the "way at the bottom of the page"/. comments rarely get attention, but I am compelled to respond to this one.
I have recently been asked by my Alma Mater to review some undergraduate portfolios to determine the quality of their General Education courses. I have been appalled at the (nearly) complete lack of ability to write a coherent paper. Sometimes the voice changes, sometimes the tense changes, rarely are there actual citations and never was there any semblance of flow from beginning to end.
What was even worse, however, was the fact that the professors of these courses were giving kudos for this crap. This current generation of narcissistic praise junkies and these so-called 'educators' who give out this praise make me throw up a little bit in my mouth every time I think of them.
There are so many aspects of this story that could have been entertaining, but none of them ever quite took hold. It was a little bit like listening to presidential debates - every so often it sounds like someone is going to say something important and/or actually answer a question and then suddenly they veer off in an ill-phrased obtuse direction.
Perhaps when this writer's English teacher returns his red-lined first draft to him and he prepares his final draft, this article could be posted again.
Or is this merely just a case of "ooh - someone mentioned/. - that's front page material!>

Seriously... RTFHB
Funniest thing I've read in a long time. Well played.
+1 I've put AntiVir on every computer I own. Very tiny footprint. Doesn't give me a bunch of crap I don't want.
Should we be ridiculing you for thinking this Verizon joke was "very obscure?"
Can we have your liver then?
However this is exactly the kind of public exposure of software piracy that the offended companies can use to boost earnings.
Firings=No Lawsuits=Yes

Wait - I know - you work for Verizon!

Or maybe, just maybe, you need a refresher math class.

On another note - I have an unlimited text plan for my family. My cost per text averages .25 cents.
I wonder if they offered to pay with a cashier's check for a few hundred dollars over his fee.
I'll see your $5900 data cable, and raise you a $7250 pair of 12 foot speaker cables. http://www.pearcable.com/sub_products_anjou_sc.htm How do these people sleep at night.
What happened to the Tacoma Narrows Bride was caused...
I've been to weddings in Tacoma. There are NO narrow brides there. Was that an intentional "Corner Gas" reference? If so, well done.

Can we please now come up with a way to scam all of the MyMiniCity trolls? That would be sweet.
Point taken. I will no longer cut in line at any Starbucks located in Pakistan.
Have you tried rebooting your PC without saving your files? (not too obscure, no)
Hey, just as a friendly reminder, you forgot to complain about the moderators.
Elroy Jetson?
Now if there were only some sort of database that would allow me to search the Internet for the definition of a term...
