  1. Hostile work environment on How To Handle Corporate Blackmail? · · Score: 1

I would approach your HR group and ask about code of conduct and business ethics policies. I would also ask about what constitutes a "hostile" work environment and see if this "threat" falls into that category. I would also make it clear to HR that you feel your work environment has become too hostile for you to work your last three weeks. What you do from there would depend on their actions. That's what I would do.

    Extortion and fear.
Most people live on the edge of their finical means.
The RIAA is counting on most people being afraid that a lengthy legal battle would bankrupt them.

Their whole strategy depends on that fundamental assumption.

  4. Re:Don't Forget on Dealing w/ Relocation Package Bait and Switch? · · Score: 1

There is also the possibility that the hiring manager and HR and the relocation department didn't get together on this particular deal.

The hiring manager may "think" they hired for X job title.
HR put the new guy through as Y job title and that may be what the relocation people are working from. Y job title pays less than X does.

Either way it is still "their" problem. I would have the hiring manager contact HR and the relocation people and make sure everyone is working from the same dataset!

No matter what you signed you still have the right of refusal. There may be consequences, true, but you still have the right to do what is best for your family and career!

  5. Privatizing education or a Voucher system on Saving U.S. Science · · Score: 2

How about privatizing or moving to a Voucher system?

    My Opinion:
All schools should be Semi-private with little or no goberment influence.
Vouchers are issued to Parents to choose the schools their kids go to.
Parents will choose schools based on academics, safety, discipline an success.

Grade schools should be rewarded on how well their students perform in middle school.
Middle schools should be rewarded on how well their students perform in High School.
High Schools should be rewarded on how well their students perform in college.

Colleges are rewarded by having the highest placement/employment rate of their graduates in the "real world".

Schools with teachers that CAN teach and have the highest achievement are rewarded with more students and more money. The better a schools students do "down the line" the bigger the $$ reward.
Each school has a vested interest in the success of it's students. As long as a student behaves, does the work, keeps the rules and stays out of trouble they have a right to stay in school.
Schools are required to provide classes, teachers and specialized teaching for students with learning difficulties or special needs.

    Makes sense to me...

  6. Environment is the key on Choosing Your Next Programming Job — Perl Or .NET? · · Score: 1

    Don't look at the MONEY!!
What good is 66% more if you have no time to spend it or are too burned out to enjoy it?

Go for the smaller company if you can get them to come up a little on the pay. You'll be happier with the work environment and your ownership and control of the projects you work on. Also to feel like you really have an impact on the company with everything that you do is hard to pass up!

Some things are more important than money when looking at a potential job.

I've been in a few WELL paying jobs where the environment really sucked and I hated to even get up in the morning to go to work! I took a $15K cut in pay to work in an environment that I enjoy with people that I enjoy working with. It was worth $15K to me just for the peace of mind and to get my fire back to do the kind of work that I enjoy!

Money makes a difference but the kind of people you work with and the ENVIRONMENT you work in are worth more to me than the cash!

I agree with you. The SEC needs to get a hold of ANYONE who makes money on these stocks.
Eventyally and I mean eventyally they will follow the money trail back to someone they can nail.

Personally I think the SEC should forcably de-list or begin the de-listing process of any stock that shows up in a SPAM campaign like this.
