  1. Re:Some Math greater than Other Math on What Math Courses Should We Teach CS Students? · · Score: 0

Yes, and computer programming does not mean "science". What's so scientific about reading manuals and updating records in a database. Where is the experimentation? The only experimentation done in regular programming is when the programmer is too lazy to read documentation so he experiments.

  2. Re:Some Math greater than Other Math on What Math Courses Should We Teach CS Students? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I think they need to separate CS into two branches, one that's "computer software engineering" and another that's "computer science". The first focuses more on software engineering and different languages. The second focuses on one language (probably c++) and has more intense math and physics as this is more related to science. The reasoning would be that there tend to be two types of programmers. Those who work with scientists and really need an understanding of calculus and of physics forulas and those who work on DB front-end type stuff, these require a knowledge of some things like set theory and discrete math, but they don't need to have a deep understanding of calculus or have an understanding of physics.

Yea, I realize that this is really microsoft's fault. I tried creating an application that worked directly with NTFS a little over a year ago and spent tons of time trying to find any documentation and came up with very little. I just think that if more people were working on this problem and less time complaining about whether or to use gnome or kde and saying "RTFM", it would be better for linux in the long term.

The problem with pen-and-paper voting is an issue of national security. If people unknowingly voted for a terrorist, the government cannot easily change these votes. Also, if the security of the nation depends on a certain person getting elected, it's too hard to change paper votes and our nation will be in EXTREME DANGER.

I wish I could use linux. I've installed it and uninstalled it so many times since '96. I would probably use it most of the time if one of these two requirements was met:

    1. Support more freakin' video games. I know you people think that others just want to sit around and play with ping and tracroute all day, but yea some people actually do like to have some lesiure time on the PC.

    2. Fully support NTFS so I can dual boot and not only be able to work with my linux files from linux and my windows files from windows. At least have full read-write support on NTFS so I can really be able to use it in linux.

If either one of those two were met, I'd install Ubuntu (or whatever that disto is called) today!

Am I supposed to do these crazy exhaustive searches before writing any code? Of course not, I am supposed to pay a lawyer boat loads of money to do it for me! BS, windows doesn't have a monopoly in the IT environment. I've worked at many places who use unix systems and those tend to be some very expensive machines. Plus, these IT companies should have big IT budgets, they shouldn't have all their stuff running on free operating systems, it's called redistribution of wealth. The big businesses with lots of money use the unix or windows sytems that cost lots of money which creates more jobs for developers to make the operating systems better. Those little startups can use linux all they want. There is no monopoly, it's a bunch of bologna.
