  1. A better idea... on Keyboard Video Mouse (KVM) Switches · · Score: 3

Rather than put all of your computers on a toggle type device, why not instead network them? That way, you could detach all of their monitors and keyboards and stuff save one, which will be your main console. All it needs to be is a nice setup running X11, that way you can run programs and administer all of the systems from once central location while having the versitility of each system's terminal on the screen at the same time!

Of course the problem with this is that it only works if the system is Unix or VMS. But bringing all of them together and still having seperate terminals for your Windows machines is still a nice space saver.

  2. So expensive! on More Sony AIBOs On the Way · · Score: 1
Instead of releasing a whole bunch of new Aibos at the old price, why not spend time refining the technology so that Mere Mortal can possibly afford it? To make matters worse, you gotta spend a few extra hundred on that PCMIA / data stick interface thingy if you want to program your doggie!

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait 10 more years...

  3. uncertainty.microsoft.com on Microsoft Cracked · · Score: 1

Whatever it was, that name doesn't seem to resolve anymore. I guess they must be covering their tracks for now, because fear.microsoft.com and doubt.microsoft.com also don't resolve. :-)

  4. Healthy Competition on Coppermine vs. Athlon · · Score: 2

With the recent attitude of "innovate, retaliate, counterretaliate" in the chip market, both companies are really giving the consumers a lot to look forward to. The only thing I wonder is, how long will it be before Intel and AMD are forced to slow their shrinking price to performance ratio in order to protect their bottom line?

On an unrelated gripe, "Tom's Hardware Guide" isn't helping its credibility much by having a major error in the very first sentance. "pushed from its thrown"? Ugh.

  5. Handspring Visor on PalmOS 3.3 Released · · Score: 1

Does anyone know how they could make this beast of a website faster? It took like 20 minutes to finally get to the info I wanted because it looks like every page they serve is being run through cgi or something. (Not that I'm an expert on this). Hopefully they will tweak it out soon (or the slashdotters will back off) and I will be able to order one of those bad ass green ones! (My favorite color! Woo hoo!)

That is funny, why can't I seem to find a slackware shirt? Red Hat is pretty much alone in the crass commercialization respect.

And actually, they don't sell any good shirts either, you have to go to copyleft for that.

I would very much enjoy a tux smoking a pipe slackware shirt....

  9. Contract on Scully to leave X-Files as well · · Score: 1
I'm not a big fan of the show (totally lost track of the story about a season ago) but I heard about this on the radio. Apparently Gillian Anderson has made the statement that she is spent physically and emotionally and no longer wants to do the show, BUT the studio says she still has two years of contract left and WILL be returning. So if she really does want to leave, it looks like there will be a nice legal fight to add to the drama.

It is a sad situation when a piece of paper forces someone to do something they really don't want to do, but at the same time you must consider how much the studio has invested in the show's success. Someone is going to have to be the loser here.

  11. the iBook for the rest of us on IBM's Colorful Notebooks · · Score: 1

I really don't find this suprising, especially since just about every major magazine (even Time and such) talk about the iBook as if it were the second coming or something. IBM's idea is hardly original, yet I welcome it because the iBook just isn't practical in most situations. I'm not bashing it, it's a nice little gadget, but c'mon... no disk drive? If you want to transfer your files you have to spend upwards of $400 on an AirPort system AND already have another USB Macintosh. Hopefully IBM won't make the same mistake.

  13. Can AMD compete with Intel in notebooks? on AMD Releases Mobile CPUs · · Score: 2
Can AMD processors compete with Intel processors in the notebook market? The answer is probably no. Why? Even if the AMD processer was faster, cheaper, and more advanced, the well brainwashed consumers know to look for that "Intel Inside" logo and the word "Pentium". The notebook manufacturers know this, and they are not going to risk using the AMD chip too widely because in many peoples eyes that will be an instant nix on their product. The well educated computer user may know the advantages of the AMD line and look for it when purchasing/building a computer, but the proprietary nature of notebook hardware makes it necissary for the manufacturers to cater only to the masses. Maybe some manufacturer will put out a notebook so dazzling that it can succeed with the AMD chip, but that doesn't seem very likely.

Despite my pessimism, I'd love to see AMD suceed. Let's wish 'em the best!

  20. Slackware and RPM on Slackware 5.0 Coming · · Score: 1
I've noticed that everyone keeps complaining that Slackware doesn't include a good package management system and therefore is a weak distro. Well guess what folks, the RPM program is distributed under the GNU license! You can download it, compile it, and start using RPMs no matter what distro you have. Of course, most binary RPMs are glibc based and won't work on current Slackware setups, but that's no biggie because SRPMs (source RPMs) are just as easy to use as RPMs! In a few simple commands you can have a package installed and compiled, in a couple more simple commands you can have it gone again. You might as well go ahead and learn how to install .tgz's by hand once you are comfortable with the file system, but having RPM installed is still nice for the (oft mentioned) reason of "this program SUCKS! rpm -e gnome!"

Oh yeah, one word of advice, you will need to pretty much always use "--nodeps" when installing RPM on a non-RedHat system because it will think there is absolutely nothing installed on your system and will fail when it checks for package dependancies.

Episode one is really special because it is the first new Star Wars in 15 years, so can episode two possibly generate as much hype when it comes out? Just think of all the attention the first "special edition" release got, and how the other two paled in comparison as far as public responce goes.
