Scully to leave X-Files as well
Rick Razzano writes "Canoe is reporting that Gillian Anderson says that she won't return for another season of the X-Files. She's saying that she's "spent" from doing the series.. So does this mean that the show will end, or can the show's producers find someone fill Mulder and Scully's shoes? "
i never watch shows once they try to replace a character with another actor. it is just plain stupid. david duchovny is mulder, gillian anderson is scully, it would never be the same with someone else bumbling around trying to be the characters.
Speaking of whom, is anyone else thinking spin-off? It could happen. It might even be good. Who would have thought that a relatively minor character from Cheers would have a successful spin-off?
What are the producers thinking?? There should have been a Lone Gunmen spin-off along time a go. Instead, they're rolling out Harsh Realm which looks like its gonna suck.
Why on earth is this article on /. ? It's not even news :) AC
Not that I watched it much past the first season, but when I do happen to catch an episode I'm reminded of just how painful it is to watch something once relatively good being milked to death.
People still watch TV? Hunh. Who would have guessed?
I have to say, the whole reason for watching the show has nothing to do with the cheezy science fiction plotlines and the repetitious situations they keep getting into, but the development of Scully and Mulder (individually and in their relationship with each other)... no one watches for 7 years because of the plot... they want to see how Mulder reacts to Scully and vis-versa... those two have developed their ideas behind the characters that no one else knows the motives of... as a result, any replacement would be an insult to to show and to it's viewers.
"If there's an Ice Tea in that bag.. it could be love." "It must be fate, Mulder, Root Beer."
Ahh, a mediocre show canceled. That leaves room for a show that might possibly be good. It seems about 1 in 240 (numbers from a large class project I did in 1994) new shows are actually worth watching. So, there's a 1:240 chance that there might be a decent new show coming to Fox. They're due one, since they haven't had a decent new show since the initial lucky stream of Married with Children, Simpsons, and 90210. Every bit counts, so get rid of those dead-weight shows.
permanently.
Dear God, if Scrappy-Doo gets resurrected, I will have to find the producer of the show and kill him.
Have them raped by Hungarian Nazi Goats from outerspace as part of a government conspiracy. Then, so traumatized by the experience, they both quit the FBI.
This would be the perfect ending because it leaves the possibility of Mulder and Scully returning to the X-files. But they probably wouldn't do something like this on TV.
But maybe I'm wrong.
What do you think?
Didn't he sing for the Pixies as well?
Why is that flamebait? That is funny! Flamerbait, maybe ...
Would you do it for some Scooby Crack?
I could do with more Mimi Rogers ...
The previous comment to this one states that X-Files is not sci-fi. I just did a query on What is the X-Files on askjeeves.com. The response I got is that the X-Files is ... the FOX network's sci-fi series.
Gee, when will slashdotters check the validatity of their responses before posting them. So, now, whether you realize it or not you're part of the "sci-fi/hacker/nerd" cult(ure) that ESR talks about if your watch the X-Files. Hey, if you like the show you should be proud of it.
Very nice ending. Did you know that there is a very rare book, written by Terry Nation that is set after the end of that episode/series. I would love to get my hands on a copy of that book, but like I said it is very rare and I'm told worth a fairly large sum. I think it's called Aftermath. Notice how I wrote the whole post without mentioning the name of that truly brilliant series.
Alright! Knock the trolls down!
He also did a walk-on at the very end of Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, but my fave was his role in Hard Target. Evil incarnate.
Your probably right, I just assumed its rare therefore its valuable, but I've since been told this is not always the case with books. So yes it rare but not it is probably not worth much. It sounds like a interesting story, but it doesn't sound as good as the first two series written by Terry Nation. I'm just interested because in my opinion the first two series were far better than the second two series. So another story written by the writer of the original story, Terry Nation would have been good to read. Oh well maybe I will find a copy in some long forgotten section of second hand book store. And yes I would love to see Scully & Mulder in that situation.
i second the vote!
It reminds me of when The Next Generation came along to take off where Star Trek left off. It was real strange at first after all those Star Trek episodes but after a few of the new episodes you realized they did it!
My favorite Lance Henrikson role was the cannibalistic bounty hunter Cole in J. Jarmusch's Dead Man also starring Johnny Depp and with cameos by some uber-famous Irish actor (what's his name?) and Robert Mitchum and Billy Bob Thornton and Iggy Pop.
If the producers have no intention to ever revive the show, they should reveal that the aliens are merely representations of those who we don't understand (during the '50s, people thought the Commies were aliens). The fear of the aliens lead to the US launching a ICBM at an "alien ship" and Russian, believing it to be under attack, retaliates and MAD ensues. In the end, very few people survive and since the whole planet is fscked up, humanity faces a bleak future similar to those apocalyptic futures portrayed in SF novels. Also, the ending could serve as a warning against ignorance and promote cooperation, etc.
No shit, I've had that theory for a very long time. I mean the whole sci-fi thing has slowly been growing in pace, but only since the 50's. I have often wonder why sci-fi just started gathering pace in the 50's. The only sensible conclusion is that the jump in technology helped spur on the sci-fi pop culture. But what if the technology was given to us to start the sci-fi movement in order to get us, the human race used to the idea that other life could and probably does exist else where. This in turn, would mean that if alien life ever does show up on Earth the human race is not going to freak out to much because most humans have already come to terms with the fact that we are probably not the only intelligent life out there. Oh and it doesn't have to be a invasion it could just be a first contact thing. Don't get me wrong it could just as easily be a invasion.
Agreed. The last season had its moments [Christmas Carol in particular]. That last "cliffhanger" shot of this season was pretty cool as well. It's coming full circle. The story arc didn't die, it just got a bit top-heavy. -Avixe
Did she mean "spent" like those salmons in artificial salmon rearing places...
I think in the last show Mulder and Scully should get it together.
At the end Scully turns to Mulder and says "But what about the Colonization Mulder?"
Mulder says "I`d rather just stay here and Shag you baby"
What I'd really like to see is some serious black fiction, Agent Mulder is killed by skully accidentally (she shot him before after all). So having accidentally killed her partner, she is put on some sort of short term Lan Hariuci-esque FBI Administrative leave where she "God forbid" shows some real human characteristics other than the robotic pantomime she's displayed since joining the show.
Chapter 2
(replacement mulder) is assigned to work with the distraught skully. They do not get along, it is the anti-thesis of the cosy plutonic relationship of mulder and skully. The sexual tension is much much higher, (of course this makes Lance Henrikson unsuitable for the role as he is too old to be a credible sexual partner with skully) and there are many more close moments between the two characters. Trite as this may sound, it will help prop up the ailing plot/story line of this show. Speaking of which, why not shift the primary protagonist from CSM to the evil enemy only the Cube could dream up. Yeah, like some non-yak evil peoples!

Does anybody remember the second season finale on Millenium? It was probably one of the best I have ever seen.
Frank lost his wife to a plauge that was spreading out of control. While his partner went crazy to the tune of Patti Smith's "Horses"....the whole 10 minute song.
I feel something similar to that would make a good series finale for the X-Files.
However, I would not like to see them use the "reset button" again....
They could have Tea Leone take over the Scully character and move the show to cable. Then they would be able to give us an X-files that lived up to the title.
Woo hoo!!! Yes! That show finally dies!! It has sucked since the 3rd season...
You make it sound like Hollywood is littered with great series just waiting for a TV network to give it a chance. (Stranger things could be true.)
The reality is that TV network execs are near incapable of booking their primetime with good programs. Whether its because of stupidity or lack of quality products is a matter of debate. I lean more towards the latter. With cable channels going into the hundreds, they desperately are looking for something they can plug into their schedules, to the point of recycling successful TV shows.
(I must say though, that the WB network appears to have one hell of a GenX linup this year...)
Does this mean she can pose in PlayBoy without FOX blowing a gasket? pleasepleasepleaseplease. Sorry, insert-geek-hormones.
Man... I could WAY be Shaggy. You should hear me say "Zoinks!" It's nutty. And just last week I was out with my dog, and we decided to go to the old abandoned fairground. Boy was that a mistake! There was a giant ghost gorilla there and he chased us away! So we went back with a few friends to look around. After we split up, the gorilla chased me and my dog around for some wacky fun, and then Velma found out that it was just Old Man Witherspoon, with a big animatronic gorilla that was covered with glow-in-the-dark paint. Boy! You shoulda heard him when we figured it out... "I woulda gotten away with it if it hadn't been for those nosy kids!" Haha... Fred sure kicked his ass good.
So just try and tell me that I shouldn't be Shaggy.

Shelly Stringfield is a double quitter - she was initially Caruso's estranged wife on NYPD Blue (and had one seminude scene in the first season). then she went to ER, and quit from it. Either she, or her agent, or both, have the worst career sense since Crispin Glover attacked Dave Letterman.
Quit being such prudish americans and show some flesh. Maybe show some alien probing. I can see keunue reeves and pam anderson playing the leads. Or maybe ron jeremy and other. If anyone has experience with dark unknown regions of space and time it has to be Ron.
The original source is today's New York Post. Anyone got a link?
As with all of the previous times the talent expressed a desire to leave, the producers will simply produce a regeneration scene to ease the transition to a new Doctor.....er.....wrong show, sorry.
Chris Carter has been saying for awhile that this would be the last season and they would continue doing XFiles movies. It would be rather pointless to do a movie where you have to introduce two new characters because Mulder & Scully were killed in the final TV episodes.
I just hope that they have the guts to make the aliens invade Earth for the last couple of episodes. That would be a hell of a way to end the show.
Remember when they changed the Duke boys? It really sucked (ok, it already sucked, but now it sucked even more).
The moral is that it just doesn't work. Unless your show is called Law & Order.
VENI! VIDI! VICI!
Lance Henriksen has played a Frank Black before.
in the A-Team.
Seriously.
It's scary.
But True.
This always happens. Remember the two fake cousins on the Dukes of Hazzard who showed up for the third season when the original actors left, who looked just like Bo and Luke but weren't? Or the poor guy who looked just like Johnny Depp on Jump Street after he left? Or the dark haired guy and the blond guy, who were supposed to be Apollo and Starbuck's kids on Galactica 1980, who were in their 20s even though Commander Adama hadnt aged a day? I *am* kidding about comparing those shows to the X-files, but there's truth in all this: network executives always take great shows and ruin them by trying to "keep the magic going" after the original stars leave. Instead of doing the right thing and cancelling the show, or making a truly different spinoff with a few of the remaining characters, they instead create what effectively becomes a parody of the original by sticking in clones of the actors and hiring bad writers to do canned remakes of old episodes. And then the show becomes tainted; instead of a great few seasons and a brilliant ending we're left with the memory of yet another gasping struggle for ratings. It's had a good life, let it die with dignity.

I think it was an Entertainment Weekly interview with Duchovny where he said he was leaving, and that he though Carter was going to kill the series after this season.
Infact, in EW's fall show preview issue coverage of the X-Files, they confirm this is the last season and Mulder and Scully will do something they've never done before.
...and bring back the writers from the first :)
two seasons of Millinium. It would be Millinium
with a different name. Man, I miss that show.
Relaunch? Huh? With the writers from the first ;)
two seasons hopefully? I used to love that show,
but when the original writers left...well, I
have no reason to even own a TV now.
It's a trend we see consistantly during times of prosperity. More and more women finding their careers unjustified so they stay home and follow their husband's lead. The husbands take over more and more functions until the women lose most of their human rights. A recession happens. Women are enlisted into the workforce, fight to win the right to vote, and history repeats itself.
then with the exception of King of the Hill, I now have my Sunday nights back.
Don't get me wrong, I loved X-Files, but all good things must come to an end. They were running out of decent stories anyway.
It will be sad to watch Fox try to butcher and bastardize something to try to capitalize as much as they can from the carcass. Let's hope the maggots make quick work of it.

Hey, she signed that piece of paper, and took Fox's money.
That's what contracts are for - to keep spoiled actors (and sports figures), working long after they figure they got enough money and fame.
"The number of suckers born each minute doubles every 18 months."
These are my friends, See how they glisten. See this one shine, how he smiles in the light.
. . . then again, the Krychek character has been through a lot of changes - switching sides, (?), being an underling of "the syndicte", then later, apparently having the upper hand - his continuing adventures could make for an interesting season or two (no more!).
"The number of suckers born each minute doubles every 18 months."
These are my friends, See how they glisten. See this one shine, how he smiles in the light.
No, the entire show has been about the phenomenon of the "urban legend" in American pop culture. The Mulder (irrational truth) vs. Scully (objectivist denial) dynamic was just there for fun.
"The number of suckers born each minute doubles every 18 months."
These are my friends, See how they glisten. See this one shine, how he smiles in the light.
Aye, Krycek is one possibility. Perhaps making him an Anakinesque fallen hero would work.
Or have something about the early days of the Cigarette Smoking Man (Spender or whatever his name is) and his cabal; though that might be too Dark Skies-esque.
One idea I've had was for something focusing on the early days of the Well-Manicured Man's involvement in the conspiracy, set in the labyrinthine British intelligence establishment at the height of the Cold War. There'd be plenty of potential there for intrigue, paranoia and head-spinning plot twists, and WMM (with his reversal and subsequent death in the movie) would make a great Anakin.
The Y files! ;)
I had heard that Chris Carter's vision was "7 seasons" but I could be misremembering
Gillian's movies. Not sure how I screwed that one up.
David Hasselhof as Mulder, Pamela Anderson Lee as Scully..
Then call it: X-Files Nights

Okay guys, I see the potential to bring Scooby-Doo back on the air. That would seriously kick ass. Of course, it would have to be animated. The test photo on dark horizons last week of some dude made up to look like Shaggy was creepier than the creepiest costumed amusement park owner I've ever seen.

Mulder and scully should be obducted by aliens that have been conspiring with a secret government agency and the Vatican.
Replace Mulder and Scully with two aliens that are both pretending to be Mulder and Scully. Each one would think that the other is real and would have to keep up the charade
Surely 'the Y-Files' would be the logical choice?

the hell w/Bo and Luke, Dukes of Hazzard wouldn't be the same w/o Daisy!
Without David Duchovney and Gillian Anderson, it wouldn't be the X Files anymore. They may as well just change the title or start a totally new show.
Yeah, he's scheduled to guest star in an episode later this season. (It was rumored that it would be the first episode during the year 2000, but that part is yet unconfirmed, AFAIK.)
They might try and do something with the other characters in the show (much like "Angel" spinning off from "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" this season.). Even if they tried to claim it was still the "X-Files", it would be a spin-off, however. Given that X-Files is so popular, it'd be pretty likely that they'd try to create some kind of spin-off.
Well, they did have Bo and Luke swapped out for thier "cousins" at one point in time whilest bo and luke did something else, maybe injured or something...

I used to watch the X-Files religiously. Except as of late in the past 3 seasons or so, I'd turn on FOX and the suckfest would begin. After Mulder's nth abduction things got pretty stupid. Gillian Anderson is doing a good thing getting away from the show - it's like beating a dead horse. She's got immense acting talent (ok I'm goign to get snotty comments for that... she's ABOVE AVERAGE).
..) is a really decent actor but his characters gone quite bland in recent years. Plus he lost all credibility from me when he hosted that Masked Magician show :)
Hopefully Chris Carter realizes it's time for the show to end finally.. maybe. I think a really good show could be built around the supporting characters such as Skinner, The Lone Gunmen, and maybe a few of those badass FBI suits who are always causing trouble. A spinoff series with The Lone Gunmen would be quite good, but I don't know if you could build a show entirely around Skinner. Mitch Pugel (I know I just totally blew that guys name
Thanks to the X-Files, a whole new generation has grown up believing in hogwash like UFOs, telepathy, teleportation, etc etc.
As a firm rationalist, I think the X-Files is as dangerous as TV evangelism, and about as valid.
Hell, even the stories were crap after Toombs.
It deserves to be cancelled NOW.

David and Gillian are the XFiles. Replacing them would just make Fox look stupid. I would like to see them have one final blow-your-mind show though.
It is a sad situation when a piece of paper forces someone to do something they really don't want to do, but at the same time you must consider how much the studio has invested in the show's success. Someone is going to have to be the loser here.
I just hope that they have the guts to make the aliens invade Earth for the last couple of episodes. That would be a hell of a way to end the show
I was just thinking - maybe this show (and all the ones like it) are really out there to help the population adjust to the "Cultural Shock" of an upcoming real-life scheduled alien invasion.
If not, it still seems like it would be good timing on the aliens part. Hello up there?
Then again, I might just be a bit paranoid.
System halted
I preferred Rosco P. Coltrane myself. I think I can still do a pretty good imitation of him too.
Remember Coy and Vance. They were the replacement cousins on the Dukes of Hazard. When I was little, I watched the show constantly, now I can't stand it.

Do I look like I speak for my employer?
So, there was a planned Millennium crossover, with Frank Black making an appearance on the X-Files. I'm not sure if this is still happening, but either way it implies that Carter's creations lie in one universe. Wouldn't it be possible for Mulder and Scully to live on within the universe, perhaps making appearances when the time is right? Obviously, this could easily be overused and made stale, but, done right, it could be an effective method of keeping the two characters "alive."
You've got to be kidding! Mulder and Scully are the only good points about the show (with the possible exception of the Lone Gunmen). It sure wasn't Chris Carter's "vision"--Harsh Realm is going to die a nasty death.

The X-Files without Mulder and Scully would be like The Dukes of Hazzard without Bo and Luke, it would suck...

The show has been on for ages, and there were arguments between Carter (producer) and Duchovny (Mulder) on money, that's why Duchovny left. He'd left earlier, but it seems he didn't have much success with his movie career. It's different for Anderson, who hasn't played big parts but who was pretty successful at them (according to the critics; see this site for more on Anderson). I think they'll make more movies because the overall money/time ratio is better ;-)
All too often I see these poor people thinking they have made a first post. tsk! There are so many news sites where you could make a first post and be sure about it. Hell, you can make a first post on a two week old story at http://dtheatre.com
They should have M&S permanently lost somewhere and focus on the lone gunmen. They're already the next most popular characters. It would be an almost perfect spinoff that would appeal to geek culture. Or maybe chris will focus on harsh realm and make it not suck as hard as millenium.
The show should go out with a bang. I'd like to see them both get killed off by the bad guys. It would be just like real life where the good guys loose and the powers-that-be win. Kind of fitting for the show.
Of course, I'd like to see another movie too...
I'll miss them.
the show has gotten to repetative I can understand why they'd want to leave
Every good thing must come to an end. Xfile has
already ended as far as I am concerned, I do not watch it any more, it got too boring, and I hate re-runs. I use to love this show, and give up everything to watch it, but they screwed up, too late, they should let it be.

"You can't shake the Devil's hand and say you're only kidding."
Scully should be replaced by a gorgeous woman with telepathic abilities, and Mulder should be replaced by a more authoritarian, comandeering figure... possibly a bald ship captain.
Also, they should change the mood of X-files to something a little brighter and more futuristic... maybe a spaceship... and swap out smoking man for an android. Now THAT would be cool. Modify the name of the show to something more funky, like "ne-X-t Generation", and voila... the show must go on.
"Is this just useless, or is it expensive as well?"
There's been a couple of shows that have focused primarily on the Lone Gunmen and they seem to be able to handle center stage pretty well. If they got some good storylines I think they could make a very entertaining spinoff. I also think Krycek might be able to fare well in a spinoff. He seems to have a lot of sides to his personality, he's had quite a few adventures. The more I think about it, the more I think they could really do something with that character.
...that they bring in Lance Henriksen as Frank Black.

The X-Files is one of the few reasons I watch TV anymore, and now with Scully gone, it'll definitly not be the same X-Files. I miss that show already.
I want to see what happens. I think this might be a good thing, if it is known in advance that the series is coming to an end, they can plot out the last season properly. I'd rather have some kind of ending than be stuck the way I was at the end of Twin Peaks...
All the creatures will die, And all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai. (Jubai, 1605)
They should never have moved production out of
Vancouver. The quality of the show went *way*
downhill after that. Everyone appears to have lost interest - including the viewers!
From what I understand, and have been told (My Father is in the X-Files fan club) the show was never meant to go over 5 seasons. So when some people complain of repeditive content, you can understand why. Truely the movie did mostly 'end' the series, since most everything was in the open by then, and Mulder got what he was looking for. Be it true or not about how long the show was intended to last (I hope somone will correct me if I am wrong) it's still a dissapointment to see the cast slowly leaving. I pretty much own my TV for X-Files.. =] But like any good show, it has to end somewhere. At least what they did have, they made to be a Very Good Thing. Looks like I'm going to be back in front of the monitor 16 hours a day again.. =]
News Flash CBS 198?
In a news flash today the producers of the hit show "Dukes of Hazzard" say the stars who play "Bo" and "Luke Duke" are leaving the show. The producers say the show will go on with two new characters, apropriately enough, cousins, who will be named "Coy" and "Vance". After all, it is the innovative plots that weekly drive the show and not the characters according to unnamed CBS executives.
But can the future Coy and Vance continue to jump the General Lee over all the Friday night Prime Time competition? Time will tell.
Tom Wopat and John Schneider refused to comment, but sources believe they may return for annual weekly movies. Other executives point to the failure of the spin off show "Enos", to generate enough interest and viewers to justify continuation of the popular action series with its main stars gone, but where there's a chance to make money, Hollywood will give anything a try.
I stopped watching the show regularly back in January--it was clear by then that it no longer had any direction, it was just gonna keep going on and on with no resolution to the story arc in sight. In fact, I don't really think that there IS a story arc any more, if there ever was; I believe Carter is now just more or less making it up as he goes. This is why I say Fox should just let it die. Instead of raping the corpse and trying to squeeze one last buck out of it they should wrap it all up neat and tidy this season--with or without an alien invasion--and move on to something else.
Makes me appreciate Babylon 5 all the more--JMS decided at the start that he had a story he wanted to tell, that it would go on for a finite length of time with a beginning, middle and end, and that once it was over it was frigging OVER. I wish that that kind of foresight had gone into X-Files--the show would in all probability be finished by now, but at least it would have ended decently
I'll buy any one of them a beer, If I run into them. Lone Gunmen rule, and I hope to see some folks at the local Con.
Am I the only person who liked the last season? It looked like they cut loose with projects that got shelved during other seasons.

I suppose if Chris C. wanted, he could have them replaced with Pamela (Anderson) Lee and David Hasselhoff. Rename the show "X-Watch."
Hey, its guaranteed to be a hit in Germany with all of D.H.'s star power.
I guess that would give new meaning to the phrase "I have alien implants."

Hmmm, or they could have Nitrozac replace Scully. Which wouldn't be all that bad, you'd only get shots of Scully from behind or great close-ups of her boots!

I think if anything else happens with the show, it will spawn spin-offs. Kinda like Star Trek/TNG/DS9/Voyager. Other than that, the show is going to die.
Hmm. Mulder, Scully and the Lone Gunmen are lead into a trap by the original Deep Throat, who has returned from the dead to try and get them to join up with them.
Deep Throat has set up a test for them, which Mulder think he has proven that Deep Throat is infested by Aliens, when actually Deep Throat is testing Mulders Loyalty.
Mulder and DT meet, Mulder orders Deep Throat to stand still, but DT, overcome by emotion staggers forward to embrace him. Mulder fires twice, and DT Looks down to see a really big hole in his chest.
Evil MIB (or whoever the main villans are) rush in, to show that it really was a trap the whole time, and they have been in complete control for the last season. The Lone Gunment and Mulder are quickly killed, and just Scully is left, standing over Mulders corpse, shocked by what has happened. They order her to drop her gun.
She stands still, looking down at Mulder. Then, having reached a decision, she looks at the nearest generic redshirt, slowly raises her gun, points it at his face, smiles and... Freezeframe
Credits roll, with the sound of gunfire replacing the usual music.
Damn, they don't make Christmas episodes like that anymore. That just said "This is the end of the show".
And if you don't know what I'm talking about, you missed a great English TV show in 1978-1981. Pity I just ruined the ending
I have a copy myself, and I have the following problems with it :
-some extreme out of character writing, -a silly main plot with Avon's Sister taking over the galaxy
-the introduction of a copy of Orac called Caro, which was built by Avon as an anti-Orac
-going to the effort to bring them back just so they can be killed in stupid ways (Tarrant gets killed by quick-evolving white sabertooth tigers on Terminal for example)
The thing that annoyed me most was that Vila is written as a drug & alcohol addict. Not a 'I have nothing better to do, so I'll have a bit of a drink, if they are in trouble they'll call me. Oops one drink too many' who is kept around cause he is too useful to dump. And he's way too chummy with Avon, considering Avon had blatently tried to kill him in the 3rd last episode (Orbit)
The two radio plays they did this year and last year are a much better value for money, even though they have a few plot problems. They get around the fact that the crew are all dead by setting them in the early 4th season.
But honesty, wouldn't you love to see Scully and Mulder in this situation ?
As I posted when the Mulder story was posted. The X-files was not to continue after next season anyway. It would be hard for them to continue on the show when there is no show to continue on.
Considering how badly the Millenium re-launch was handled, and how easy it would have been to do it right, there is little hope that the a show as long-running as the X Files could continue without either of the stars.
Which leaves room for something entirely new, and perhaps even as daring as the first season of Millenium...

Are you an SF Fan? Are you a Tru-Fan?
I've thought the show was going to end this season anyway, I hope they put it to death. I don't think this will be the end of the movies, though. Carter has said he plans more.
Hope they don't do the law and order thing, to replace the only leading woman character on the show every 2 years.

my life is at an end...gillian anderson is the hottest person ever..not only that, X-Files kick ass...i got depressed when she had the baby so they staged the abduction bit...this totaly sucks..i'll never leave my computer again now..it's the last thing i have left to live for...

I used to be an avid X-Files fan until the abduction thing started becoming the main theme of the story, instead of the "investigation of the paranormal," which was the original intent of the whole X-Files project. Replacing the characters won't work, I've seen several halfway-decent shows ruined by that attempt. Let the show die and move on to something else.
She is the BASIS of the story!!! She's so skeptical which keeps the story going. Without her, the story would and will be shorter. All I can say is, please get someone good to fulfill her place. If not, I am going to open up a can...

I think they owe it to there fans to finish the show the way it was meant to be. I agree with people that it has been dragging on a for some time, but I still want to see it end in a good way. All good things come to and end, but do they come to a good end?
If Anderson & Ducovny were smart they'd stick around and do another X-files movie. At least that way they wouldn't have to work again. But now people are going to be pissed off at them for forcing the show to end. And, IMHO it is still the only show in the wasteland of TV worth watching, despite what people say about it getting old.

Child: Mommy, where do
Mother: HELL! Straight to hell!
I've never been the same since.
Just like driving a car:
(D) to go forward
(R) to go backward
.........and am I the only one that knows that this year was planned for the last two years as the final season of the X-Files, and that *OF COURSE* neither Duchovney or Anderson would be returning after this year?
Hello? I guess this "canoe.com" doesn't even know what the hell is going on either...
