  1. Google on Choosing a Replacement Email System For a University? · · Score: 1

I've gone to two public universities in South Dakota, Dakota State in Madison and the School of Mines & Technology now in Rapid City. We used a web-based MS Outlook client for our email system, and it was horrible. The interface just wasn't intuitive, it was slow, and just generally a pain in the ass. We use Google at the School of Mines and it's lightyears ahead. I mean, Gmail is most everyone's favorite webmail client for a reason.

Actually, the names of the parts per billion or trillion are rather misleading. It is, in fact, by weight that these are measured. So, in an 8 oz. 236.5g glass of water, a 1 part per billion concentration solution has 2.365e-5 milligrams of a given drug in it. (Given in milligrams as that is a common drug measurement)

If only Sony would open up the specs to the PS3, this could already be a reality. I'm sure someone will reverse engineer it given enough time, but using the official specs would be the real deal.

  6. Re:Economics 101 (was: Cue Nelson) on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Protections Fully Broken · · Score: 1

It is for this reason that I actually prefer to burn my own copy of a movie than to own the original. I use DVD Shrink (on Linux :) to rip ONLY the movie off of the disk and burn it. No menu, no nothing, you put it in and it just starts playing. Why would I want any of that other shit? My girlfriend works at a movie rental place, so we get free, unlimited movie rentals. If there's one we really like and want to keep, we just burn. It's simple economics, if a customer isn't satisfied with a business they're not going to buy anything from them. The movie and record businesses haven't figured this out yet, and think that it's just people trying to cheat them out of money. No, if the original was worth having (which it is in many situations) consumers would buy it.

  7. Re:Hello, my name is Brad and I was a hardcore gam on Hardcore Gamers on the Decline? · · Score: 1

I feel the same way. I used to play all of the popular games with my friends at LAN parties every other weekend or so, we got really into it. Now that I'm out of high school, real life has caught up to me and I'm busy with work, school, and my girlfriend that I just don't have the time. When I do sit down to play games now, it's never any of the newest, most popular stuff. It just doesn't interest me anymore, I think they kind of suck. Instead, I spend a lot of time playing old ROMs like F-Zero X, Pokemon (yeah red version's the best game ever), old Dragon Warrior games, and open source stuff like Crack Attack, Frozen Bubble, and BZFlag (actually that one's cool on a LAN). Basically, I don't play games nearly as much, and when I do, it's not something I spend much money on.

  8. So what? on Questioning the Linux Foundation's Credentials · · Score: 1

So what if it is a commercial organization? Unless it's totally misrepresenting itself, I don't see the problem. People have to make money somehow, and as Linux is booming in popularity, there are more and more opportunities to use Linux to make money that people are jumping on. There's nothing wrong with that, it's capitalism, simple economics. I think it will cause some controversy for a while as the whole "Free Software" and "Big Business" ideals collide, but in the end, I think it will be good for Linux. It will put smart, powerful people in a position with a vested interest in improving Linux, like Intel and their Open Source GMA drivers or whatever. It's actually profitable for them to hire programmers to write this code and release it for free, if it wasn't, they wouldn't do it. I have a feeling that this may actually be the beginning of the second computer industry boom, a la Y2K, where they couldn't hire enough talented programmers. Am I way off or does anyone else see this?

People will bitch and moan about personal freedom, but the public education and extensive library system are given to you for free by the government not because it has to, but because it's in the best interest of the government to do so. Education is critical to the government, because dumb people don't do anything useful. They should have every right to keep you from using their equipment for anything other than its original purpose: learning. If people want to fuck around on MySpace, they can do it on their own.

  12. What the fuck? on Giving the Gift of Ubuntu Linux for Christmas? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I hate it when people get me shitty Christmas gifts that I'll never use. Sometimes it's a cute stuffed animal, sometimes it's a talking keychain, sometimes it's a house decoration. I mean, it's fun for like, an hour, until I get sick of it. What a waste of money! I much prefer it when my grandma gives me a box full of clothes that fit me, or when my mom gives me enough toilet paper to last until next Christmas. I don't want cutesy shit that I don't need, the best Christmas gift is something that I'll actually use. Which would you rather hear, "Wow! Your Christmas gift saved me so much time and money it's unbelievable! Thanks so much!" or, "Ummm... Yeah... It's still sitting on my living room table. I look at it sometimes." You may think that your friends and family would do great to start using Linux and overthrow the monopoly, but I think that my family would be really smart to start driving smaller, more fuel-efficient cars, but they're in love with their pickups and SUVs and I'm not about to change their minds, so I get them a gift certificate for a full inspection of their truck, brakes, alignment, oil change, all that fun stuff instead. It does a hell of a lot more good. I know you mean well, but use your head. What will they really get use out of?
