  6. Daily Schmail on Holocaust Dropped From Some UK Schools · · Score: 1

For all the US/Global readers out there, I would like to point out that the Daily Mail has a very poor reputation in the UK as a sensationalist, trashy paper that disguises its self as a "real" newspaper in order to get a certain portion of Middle Class, Middle England wound up about essentially right wing topics like "the state of immigration" and such by tweaking just the right linguistic nerves such as "Holocaust denial". As soon as I saw TFA it was obvious to me the implied sentiment was more along these lines than an actual concern about Holocaust denial. It seems fairly obvious to me that the same course, when taught in different areas of England should be geared towards pupils being able to learn as much as possible from the course, and teaching a topic that collides directly with a deeply ingrained cultural beliefs isn't going to be productive whichever way you look at it. I'm not saying that it's OK for people to deny the Holocaust or whatever, but that is a separate issue which needs tackling at a much higher level. In most schools this isn't an issue, but in some areas where there is a predominant Muslim population, of course it is going to need addressing. Teacher's jobs in the UK (or anywhere) are already difficult; to expect one person to have to breach this kind of religious/cultural barrier (the kind that has been probably the most virulent source of violence and hatred among races for thousands of years) with 20, 30 or even 40 potentially boisterous youths at a time is both unreasonable and counter-productive in the challenge of creating a well-integrated, multi-cultural society.

While I agree it may be deemed necessary by some companies to do this, it is far too easy for the "deeming" to spread, and the only way the only way to keep this kind of thing in check is for the potential employees to vote with their feet - once a job reaches a threshold whereby enough good people are turning it down because they disagree that a particular job is WORTHY of that level of scrutiny, then an employer is going to have to listen and tone down their policies. Congratulations on having the scruples to say no to these offers, Manticor; I would very much like to think I would too if it ever happened to me (I'm a firm believer in privacy and kick up a fuss whenever I'm asked to provide ID for anything) but in this case it's so close to the bone that that I just can't promise I would for what I assume would be a pretty well paid job in a "financial institution"; consequently I feel really disappointed in myself :S

"Most email users have never had anyone try and fake messages from them to other people" Having spent some time working at an ISP and ICANN domain registrar, I know that pretty much anyone with a domain name has had their email spoofed at one time or another, if not all day every day. While this might not actually cover "most email users", the rest run the risk of their email domain (e.g. hotmail.com) being spoofed by spammers. In the case of spoofed emails, it's often the recipient that is at most risk, digital signatures that allow a recipient to verify that a mail's source was actually the domain it claims to be from are a great help in combatting spam.

I think this kind of response shows a flagrant lack of understanding of how computers even work. Have you ever heard of a bottleneck? Regardless of how trends may or may not continue, the average current PC is facing such a tiny bottleneck on disk loading time compared to the amount of processor time available. I have a *very* low end dual core PC, yet it is still difficult for me to max out my processing power for any kind of sustained amount of time due to the amount of effort it takes my (hardware) Raid 10 array to do its thing. Procedural textures are long overdue, there has been an increase of thousands of percent of processing power in the last few years, but compared to the shift from say 100MB/sec UDMA to 300MB/sec SATA2?? Are you kidding???!!!

Perhaps this might decrease the amount of malware that people get from randomly clicking OK on boxes without looking what they are saying? Remember that Microsoft are engineering for the masses, not for slashdotters. This is surely a subtle way to coax a bit more conscious interaction out of the millions of lusers for which Vista is engineered. If it takes this kind of bloat to encourage the average user to pay a bit more attention to what's happening on the screen, it can only be a good thing.

People that can go beyond that and see the counterproductivity of this stuff are commonly in a much better (=more enlightened) position to chose to disable the unneccessary gubbins, or even to choose alternatives to MS products... Which is one of the things that brings us together at slashdot. In a wierd way I think the desktop PC at the moment, with its humongous amount of under-skilled yet over-dependent users, might actually need this kind of dumbing-up of the experience; it helps to raise users awareness that they actually DO need to keep track of what the computer is doing and why... and it keeps the users amused by the shiny things and out of the administrators' hair while we work away on our 'proper' computers!
