  1. There's still LaTeX on Word 2007 Vs. Open Office 2.3 Writer · · Score: 1

I began typesetting math stuff in LaTeX, and then started using it for more and more. I know people are going to say that it's too complex and awkward for quick little documents, but then again, take a look at the review. The review of Word 2007 and OO.org 2.3 is mostly about more advanced layout tools like styles, headers/footers, lists, and templates. Each of these is something that LaTeX absolutely excels at.

If you're going to say that LaTeX is not for the average user, I would agree, but also point out that this review is not for the average user. I don't know how often you've dealt with other people's Word documents, but the styling is absolutely horrific. They don't use styles, headers/footers, templates, or even lists sometimes. They just type out stuff on the keyboard and hit space until it's formatted the way they want. If you're going to be nerdy enough to compare these points between Word and Writer, then you might as well check out LaTeX. If you want to write quickie little documents, WordPad is free.

  4. The Indiana Academy on Discouraging Students from Taking Math · · Score: 1

The Indiana Academy of Math, Science, and Humanities is a two-year public boarding high school that Indiana students can apply for and attend for the junior and senior years.

The school offers placement tests that will place juniors up to AP Calculus BC, and offers math classes beyond that. There are two or three juniors in multivariable calculus, and plenty of people in linear algebra and physics C (as their first physics course too). They also offer their own differential equations course. Most of their classes are taught be teachers with doctorates.

Students that go beyond that can easily take classes at Ball State University (I think one high schooler got past ODE before) because the Academy is on the Ball State campus. The Academy has the luxury of offering all this, and it's positively amazing for kids that actually want to achieve something.

They meant that the good result of search engine competition is privacy, not that privacy policies are what determines market share.

    Eh. Oh. El. Troll.

You forgot that it was about choice, and you forgot the basic idea of a toolkit like Qt.

#1. Choose a freakin' different theme! I happen to like the default Kubuntu theme (and Keramik) more or less. Just... pick a different one that doesn't look so blocky then. It's not like Windows, where MSFT forces you to either use 9x style or XP style. You have choices. Try KDE-Look.

#2. Man don't you hate how BLOCKY programs like SKYPE and GOOGLE EARTH look on WINDOWS? Wait, you don't? Well they use Qt. Or did you not notice? Qt is made to mimick the style of the operating system it runs in. If you use Qt on Windows, it will (should) look like any native Windows app. If you use it with KDE, it should look like whatever "blocky" theme KDE is using at the moment.

Anyway, I went to OS X since I didn't want to look at an ugly GUI desktop at home. Wow. Perhaps somebody could've pointed you to Baghira if you were really that desperate.

I'm still amazed at the crap that never works for me in Linux, but I can get actually get things done with Windows. I don't feel like I'm losing out an any moral struggle or tainting my soul with sins by using Windows. It's a product that I can use to get stuff done with. I don't put up with any crap, and that's why I've ditched Linux for the desktop.

Let me just saw... wow. What are you smoking?

First of all, nowhere in the heise article was Windows Mail mentioned. The article did not blame Mozilla; in fact, it was very balanced as far as Internet articles go.

Secondly, how often do you look at the target of a link? Most of the time, I reasonably expect a link to go to a certain page and I just assume it does.

Third, I tested the exploit on Links on Cygwin, and it does not work. Links does not know what to use for mailto, and for nntp: and the others, it will actually request it from the server, resulting in 404s.

Fourth, the fact that it can actually launch local executables should set off huge alarm bells. It was clearly mentioned that commands could be injected into the command line. "Format c:" anybody?

Even if that was untrue, it is still very dangerous. There are many executables that could basically brick a user's computer. My S3 graphics drivers came with a program that, if run by the user, will make the video output unusable. My sound driver uninstaller was one-click, non-interactive, and instant. Is this stuff harmful? Many viruses and trojans just mess up a person's computer.

You imply that anybody smart enough to use Firefox wouldn't have IE7. I use Firefox, but I still have IE7 (on WinXP, no less). As a web developer, it helps to test sites on both IE and Firefox. Many people also upgrade to try the new IE out or to try making their system more secure (how ironic).

Dude, whatever it is you're smoking, it's making you hallucinate FUD.

I'd love to nod my head and agree that because kernel priorities are elsewhere, the UI on Linux is always laggy.

Except, from my experience, kernel optimization has little to do with it.

I run Windows, but I have managed to cram it full of F/OSS apps, and the thing that always struck me was that GTK apps are terrible when it comes to the UI, not only in terms of design but also in responsiveness. The symptoms are the same - resizing a window, dragging a toolbar, opening a new dialog all cause lag. The whole thing lags all over the place.

There's no Linux kernel involved, just Windows XP. It feels like GTK in its entirety is an awkward mess. I don't think I've ever been happy with GTK, not on Windows, not on Mac, not on Linux (and certainly not on my Nokia 770).
