  1. I participated in a similar program on New Plan Lets Top HS Students Graduate 2 Years Early · · Score: 1

I participated in a similar program to what is being discussed here in the 90's in Washington State

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Running_Start

In my case I transitioned completely to the community college for my junior and senior years. I completed a two year CS degree before graduating from high school. I then moved up to the University of Washington as a full time student with two years of credit transferred and completed a four year degree.Aside from providing a superior educational environment it was also a 50% off coupon for in state college tuition.

While I can understand the point of view of many posters who worry about a 16 year old moving into an adult atmosphere I do not think that it should prevent anyone from considering this option. Giving advanced, or more motivated students the additional freedom to succeed or fail may be one of the most important benefits of this program. While some students will make full use of this opportunity, others will inevitably find ways to fail. Why let the fear of failure remove an opportunity for success?

I also take issue with some of the comments posted here that characterize community colleges as having an inherently low quality of education. The finest college professor I ever had was at the community college I attended. His passion and mastery of his subject matter exceeded many of the professors I met at the University of Washington. While not every professor was like this I think it is important to not devalue community colleges because of this perception.

I have a few CD's full of MP3's from back in the day when napster had everything you have ever heard of. When iTunes came out I signed up, and have purchased every new song I wanted from it as opposed to physical CDs.

iTunes is a pretty reasonable compromise for me, I pay for songs I know I could find for free in seconds because I like the recording quality, easy access, and I like to support a business model that fits in with the way I want to buy music.

Problem is not every song exists on iTunes that I am looking for. Some may be exclusives to other online stores, or may not be released in the US. That's when I'll hit P2P, only after I can't get it on iTunes.

I hope some label people read this stuff. I am happy to pay for music I like, help yourself by making it readily available in the format I buy!

Like many others have already commented I seriously doubt it. I do think that with the current infrastructure, meaning mostly the backbone lines, we have taken this thig about as far as it can go. In order to do more with the internet we need the ability to move what would be by todays standards pretty huge amounts of data. I am still sitting on the fence as to weather Internet 2 will be able to move the amount of data required to give streaming digital TV to the masses. And even with the fastest backbones in the world the last-mile cables into everyones houses has a long way to go, and current broadband technologies have a snowball's chance in hell of being able to handle digital streaming televion. Current developments in optronics are giving us the ablility to move that kind of data, but the race to rework the last mile seems to be between wireless broadband (most likely cellular and satellite) and fiber to the home. I haven't heard of a cellular solution that pushes near enough data to be able to move the internet forawrd in any major way in terms of speed, but makes large steps in making internet connections availbile pretty much anywhere in major cities (I don't see this happening in rural areas too much). Fiber to the home provides enough speed, but a much larger capitial investment on the part of the telecos. Who will win is pretty hard to call right now, but if anything is certain here, it is that the internet is not even close to peaking.

Exactly. I started using napster looking for fairly predictable stuff, and moved on to new types of music I would have never found through the US music industry. Now almost everything I listen too comes from the UK, (yeah essential mix, go radio 1!). I know that file sharing like napster will continue, the industry cannot stop it (yet). I hope that the industry realizes this and learns to work with napster, it could make them more money if they thought about it.

I have 64MB of RAM, which was not the point I intended to make, Gnome/Sawfish on the same hardware does a much better job as far as speed goes. Why should it take so long for an MP3 player to load? Why should it 5take so long for a terminal? It's not that I have this much RAM or that much, the point is what is OSX doing that requires so much extra time? And I don't agree that including GCC would make users feel compelled to compile everything? When was the last time you recompiled everything in Linux? I know I have compiled parts (X, Mozilla, etc.), but it does not mean that I have to compile X myself.

I run linux on an iBook, I got a hold of the public beta a couple weeks ago and ran it on my iBook for a couple weeks to get a feel for what OSX 1.0 might be like as an alternative to using Linux. All of the pretty things that you would expect from Aqua are...you guessed it pretty. It's nice having such a cute desktop, but I have some issues with the software on the BSD side they chose to include...most importantly no gcc! Now I know I just could have run out and compiled it, but seriously. Also the load times for EVERYTHING were really bad, up to 15 seconds to load a terminal window sometimes, and that's one of the faster loading apps. The GUI was cool, I liked the dock and all but when it came down to getting work done I must say I found ol' Yellow Dog Linux to be the easy choice. OSX has a long way to go IMHO

Okay first things I was in downtown Seattle were all of the demonstrations occurred. The news media (even local) is focusing on some rather limited acts of vandalism the have happened over the course of the day. A group of "anarchists", which were in reality about 15 nineteen year old kids dressed in black broke some windows and spray painted all kinds of things. I think it is important to understand that the action of these 15 or so kids is what you are hearing about in the news, and doesn't represent the actions of many thousands of protesters you demonstrated peacefully. As far as the police, they were very patient for the most part and did use tear gas and rubber bullets. For whatever reason they are denying the use of the rubber bullets but they were used at a couple of occasions during the day. While I wasn't there to protest the WTO directly I can't say that I agree with the closed door nature of there meetings, or many of their decisions (gene patents anyone?). PS In reply to an earlier post the CSE department at UW is quite good, but it is small and VERY difficult to be accepted to.
