  1. But wait! If higher CO2 eliminates clouds, why does Venus (which has an extremely CO2-rich atmosphere) also have about 100 percent cloud cover?!?

  2. I received one of those emails overnight as well.

In today's world, quite frankly you're a bumbling idiot if you haven't contacted all the credit bureaus to have your credit reports frozen. I did that for my wife and I shortly after the Equifax clusterfuck. And it really isn't a hassle either. My wife and I have needed access on a couple occasions and it's a simple matter to obtain a one-time PIN that the creditor can use, in our case a vehicle purchase and a home equity loan.

Yeah, the Amazon thing likely doesn't involve a credit report by any stretch of the imagination, but it's still a good idea to have your credit bureau reports frozen, which carries the force of law.

  8. I've been eyeing a new table saw for a while, and settled on the one I want a couple weeks ago.

Although I've obviously talked about it with my wife (I mean, it's a $500 purchase, not something you just do without talking about it) quite a bit, she has never, ever, not once looked up anything about table saws whatsoever on her phone (iPhone 6s) or laptop (MacBook Pro). Sure, I have on my devices but they are not tied together at all. Separate accounts, separate iCloud, all that. I'm not on a single social media network either although she's a Facebook and Pinterest person.

Her and I have talked, verbally, about the saw I want, and that is the extent of her interaction. While using our computers or phones though for other purposes.

So a couple days ago, she asks me "Any idea why I'm seeing ads for table saws on my computer?"

  11. Sadly, my 39-year-old wife. I've asked her, gently pleaded with her, etc., to put down her phone when she's driving and quit playing Pokemon. But it never fails. Any time she's driving, her phone is in her lap with Pokemon running. I've decided any time I'm in the car with her, I'm driving, or if I'm not, I'll point-blank tell her "please put that down so we don't crash." I haven't (yet) physically taken the phone out of her hands but have definitely been tempted to.

I wish phone use while driving was a primary offense in Nebraska, but unfortunately it is not. One of these days she WILL smash up her car. Again. I'm convinced it's only a matter of time.

My son's school pictures arrangement is about like this too. Some company called Lifetouch contracts with the schools for school pictures. OK, no big deal, right?

    If only...

So here's what they do. They herd the kids through the usual picture rigamarole and then a few weeks later, there is a proof image to look at and parents can decide which poses the want, right?

    Oh no. Not at all.

A few weeks later, a full print set with all the usual sizes shows up in my son's backpack. A few 8x10s, some 4x6s, a bunch of wallets. Probably about the $25-30 package. Printed, ready to go, in his backpack. And Lifetouch puts a letter in there saying (paraphrased): "Hey mom and dad! Here are the wonderful pictures of your super cute kid! We already printed them for you, if you want to keep them just send a check back to the school. Or if you hate your kid and think he's ugly, send them back with a note to the teacher. Oh, and if you keep them and don't pay, we'll just kick your kid out of the photo line next year."

And not to mention what happens if you do send them back. Who knows? I bet they don't actually get sent back to Lifetouch. My guess is a pile of crisp 8x10 photos with all the identifying information a sexual predator would want printed right on the envelope goes straight into the dumpster.

I sent a note to Bezos a while back offering this exact thing. I was tired of my Amazon packages going by US Mail and arriving on time maybe 20 percent of the time. I basically told him "Hey I'm a Prime member but USPS shipping sucks. I will gladly pay an extra couple dollars to have my packages upgraded to UPS or FedEx."

Sadly, they don't yet have a way to do that but if they did, I bet it'd really hurt the post office enough that they'd ponder getting their act together.

But there's another obvious method by which Trump could "reverse" this dictate from Obama.

He could say that, because it's exceptionally difficult to actually reverse what Obama did, that any company is free to go ahead and drill and he will issue an indefinite pardon from any consequences spelled out in the law used by Obama.

It'd be like if an outgoing mayor put up a bunch of "no parking" signs all over the place on his last day in office and welded them to the sign posts. New mayor comes in and says "well, I can't really take them down but anyone who parks there and gets a ticket, the fine is zero dollars."

I didn't realize it until an hour or more later during our layover when I was going to look something up on it. It was a VERY sickening feeling to realize what had happened. At that point, that airplane had already departed for another destination.
