What commitment? (Google cache link)

Just spend some time reading Microsoft's own product announcements, interviews, etc... they don't make any effort to hide any of this. You'd pretty much have to be blind not to see what's going on... oh wait, that pretty much describes most of /. poster community.

MS is working with British Telecom to develop online applications and media support including appication rental that can be used for an added nominal monthly fee... all of this is web browser accessable, and while the dot's are pretty thin to find, I've heard in the developer circles that once it is stablized around MSN 9, MS is looking to offer this service out to XBox live subscribers.

Microsoft makes no efforts to hide what they're planning, and doing. It's all out there in your face if you bother to take the time to read it.

Damn spell check. You'd think with the average spelling on slashdot, I'd get away with such a slip up.

As for the counterfeit bill I mentioned. My memory was flawed. It was $200 and George Bush, not $3.00 and Bill Clinton. (Thanks Unknown Poltroon (31628) ) Funny how your memory starts to fail as you age.

DANVILLE, Ky. -- It started out with a blizzard and now a Dairy Queen in Danville is getting an avalanche of attention.

This $200 bill was used at a Danville Dairy Queen Sunday
A woman who paid for her food with a fake $200 bill Sunday left with plenty of change. The bill had a picture of George W. Bush on the front and oil rigs on the back.

"That's the talk of the town," Danville resident Joseph Bourne said. "It's got to be one of those dumb blonde stories."

Added fellow resident Drew Hammond: "It's the kind of news I like to hear out of my own hometown. Usually things don't happen of great significance here. It gets a lot of attention."

The 18-year-old employee has offered to refund the store. Her manager, Mike Tracy, tried to be supportive, and said that she probably was just too busy to notice the mistake.

"We try to do things as quick as possible here," Tracy said.

At least he's being a good sport about it. The restaurant is now distributing coupons on the backs of fake $200 bills.

"We're going to play off this advertising a little bit and try to think of it as something positive," Tracy said.

Local law enforcement said that the joke became a crime when the woman took off with all that change.

"When the woman received the money and left with it, the joke ceased," Danville police officer Bob Williamson said.

Still, because there's no such thing as a $200 bill, the woman, if caught, couldn't even face federal counterfeit charges.

What Minsky is actually flaming about here is the damage done to the field by the original "AI winter" and the real possibility of a new AI winter starting in a few years.

"AI winter" is the name given to the collapse of strong AI as a business model in the mid 80's - expert systems and symbolic AI in general didn't deliver on their promises, and so the money went away. As a guy who got his doctorate in AI in 1985, I can tell you all about it. ;-)

One of the major causes of AI winter was researcher hubris - lots of people hacked up systems that appeared to solve 80 percent of certain complex problems and then said "all that stands between us and a complete solution is money and time". For many of those systems, solving the last 20 percent would have taken 2000 percent of the time, if it could have been done at all. The tragedy of AI winter, though, is that basically all of symbolic AI was abandoned, though some of it is creeping back out into the light with obfuscated syntax (see my .sig below).

What Minsky sees here is a lot of people heading down the same path, but with neural nets and small robots instead of expert systems. The new systems are doing some interesting things relative to the old symbolic AI systems (though they do have the advantage of 20 years of Moore's law to help them). But, will they scale up? Right now, nobody knows. If they don't, the last thing the field needs is another cycle of overpromise/underdeliver/abandon.

Maybe AI is just plain hard, and cracking it will take longer than one or two computer industry business cycles.
