    VIA EMAIL:

    Date: --- May 2007

    URL address: IRC://----/#----

    Dear Sir or Madam,

Microsoft Corporation has received information that a host/domain name registered to/by your company is acting as an IRC server controlling a network of computers compromised with an unauthorized backdoor, commonly referred to as a 'botnet'. Botnets are often controlled in violation of criminal laws and commonly engage in distributed denial of service attacks or the distribution of malware without authorization.

Specifically, the following information details the botnet hosted on your network:

    IRC Server Hostname: ---
    Server Port Number: ---
    IRC Channel Name: ---

We request that you investigate and take action subject to your Terms of Service. Since botnets typically connect to hostnames embedded in malware, you may consider redirecting the DNS entry for this hostname to an abuse site. Otherwise the person(s) controlling this botnet can simply redirect the DNS entry to another IP Address.

If you have any questions, please contact us by replying to this email. We appreciate your prompt cooperation in this matter. Please advise us regarding what actions you take.

    Yours sincerely,

    ----

"It stopped and went into a defensive mode and swung its tail with the spike.

"Steve unfortunately was in a bad position and copped it.

"I have had that happen to me, and I can visualise it - when a ray goes into defensive, you get out of the way.

"Steve was so close he could not get away, so if you can imagine it - being right beside the ray and it swinging its spine upwards from underneath Steve - and it hit him.

  13. Re:RTFA on Iranian Heavy Water Nuke Plant Goes Online Today · · Score: 1

Right, but it's only a couple of years away:

Iran has been a building a heavy water reactor near the plant for two years, but the reactor is not scheduled for completion until 2009.

Nuclear weapons can be produced using either plutonium or highly enriched uranium as the explosive core. Either substance can be produced in the process of running a reactor.

Reactors fueled by enriched uranium use regular - or "light" - water as a "moderator" in the chain reaction that produces energy. Reactors using "heavy water" contain a heavier hydrogen particle, which allows the reactor to run on natural uranium mined by Iran, foregoing the enrichment progress.

  16. Re:Not really that serious on Microsoft Bracing for Worm Attack · · Score: 1

At Miami, we use Cisco Clean Access. We do not support firewalls that do NAT, including routers, because of the unnecessary support burden. CCA allows non-Windows machines to authenticate to the network without going through the policy enforcement hoops that Windows machines go through. Some organizations have Nessus scanning turned on in CCA as a policy option though. CCA verifies AV Software/Updates and Windows Updates by using a client-side agent that reports back the relevant information to the CCA appliance. OS detection can be done based on the web browser's user-agent or OS fingerprinting. Owners of headless devices, e.g. XBox and PS2, can use a web application to exempt their devices, which of course puts the device in a separate network role designed for the device and discourages students from trying to exempt their computers.
