NEW ORLEANS, LA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 09/02/2005 -- A group of ex-military pilots was formed today to fly medical supplies in and patients in need of "extreme medical care" out of the worst parts of disaster-stricken New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The veteran pilots, with years of special operations and air rescue experience, launched their efforts this morning to help expand traditional airlift efforts, which have become overwhelmed by the scope of the disaster. The first emergency rescue flew a seven-month old baby from Louisiana to South Florida where she underwent transplant surgery. The pilots are donating their time and planes to this effort, and have been using the Internet to coordinate both the missions and the fundraising to make these flights possible. Each emergency flight requires $3,000 to $4,000 in fuel to airlift extremely ill victims to emergency hospital settings out of state. Donations are being taken online at www.airkatrina.com and a blog of the rescue activities has been set up at http://airkatrina.blogmaker.com./ "This is an example of Internet entrepreneurs quickly mobilizing to solve a major human crisis," said Rick Schwartz, a member of the World Association of Domain Name Developers (WADND.COM), which includes the website www.WorldJet.com which was used to recruit the pilots. The cost of setting up the site was donated and additional contributions have been made by other members of the Internet community, including DomainSponsor, a division of Los Angeles-based Oversee.net. "Time is running out for those most in need," said Schwartz. "Fortunately, the Internet allows real-time donations to be converted into the precious gasoline to allow us to make many more trips to save lives." Schwartz reiterated that zero percent of the fees donated will be used for overhead, with all money (minus banking fees) going directly to gasoline. For more information or to donate money to fund an airlift, please visit http://www.airkatrina.com./
Turned into a big scam http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/breaking _news/12810773.htm Working from his Aventura apartment, Gary Kraser posed as a pilot to solicit thousands of dollars over the Internet to pay for relief flights to Hurricane Katrina-ravaged Louisiana, the FBI said Monday following his arrest. Among his pitches on www.AirKatrina.com: That he evacuated a 7-month-old infant who underwent transplant surgery in South Florida. -

This guy ACTUALLY HACKED T-Mobile. He even had access to the accounts of the Secret Service agents investigating the hack. It looks like he wants a security job too. Funny thing is his story didn't get HALF the press. Wonder why... o_O -
Re:Hypothetical Prison Conversation
So his salary was somewhere in the ballpark of 28 to 30k per year. Dude was poor. Particularly for a software engineer. Why else do you think he made a grab at all those screen names for a measly 28k? So he could come up a little bit or pay off his student loans (assuming he had any). Maybe his grandpa had cancer and he was trying to help. You never know about people's motives in harmless crimes like this.
Or, as described in the indictment to pay for a 9-day vacation to Scandinavia.
Plus Smathers even admitted he was an "outlaw", and never mentions any selfless motives in all his court statements.
This is a typical story of the little guy getting the shaft.
True, soon enough... with a soft body molded by years of being infront of computers, I suspect he'll be getting plenty of shaft while serving his prison sentence. -
Subtle crooksHas this not been on
/. before? There seems to be a lot of comment about the case, considering that he asked to have the cheque made out his own name.
This line even appears in court documents (pdf).

Hidden Agenda?
Time was, you used to have to work at Abu Gharib to see this sort of thing.
1) Muslims are more concerned than most people about their privacy;
2) Less of them will fly
3) Safety!
...or not.

Re:What is terrorism? Re:The Iraqis, for one....
Why do I get the feeling as soon as I post any kind of source, neutral (unlikely) or not. It will be declared biased, liberal media (or the British equivalent) and therefor automagically a lie, no investigation necessary...
And I'm still trying to figure out why you act like I'm saying that people aren't being kidnapped and executed. Trying to stick words in my mouth? What, you think I break out the popcorn when I hear someone else got their head sawn off?
And anyway, I was curious about your particular spelling of Fundamentalist Islamists as "Islamunists." So I ran a google search on the term. Ah, freepers and the like. Well, I can comfortably say, you likely yourself are biased to neo-"conservative" media, even ignoring the repeatition of points givin on varius neo-con radio shows in your previous post.
Not exactly a neutral source, but they tie in multiple fragments.
"They sent the dogs toward me. I was scared," Mohammed told investigators. "The first dog bit my leg and injured me there and this was bad luck. The bite from the first dog caused me to have 12 stitches from the doctor of my left leg as a result I lost a lot of blood."

Re:...they don't have it already? The Register has a very good article on this entire story. IMO it should have been linked in the Slashdot header for this discussion.
InfoCom Corporation, current holder of the
.IQ TLD, has gotten into big trouble for aiding terrorists. Note that this isn't the same Infocom that made Zork and all of the other adventure games. They no longer exist, but there are several Infocom fan sites available.http://www.4law.co.il/L1.htm for more information about the arrests of Infocom owners for aiding terrorists.

Re:I'm not an American...A week later, the Observer reported than an employee of GCHQ (UK equivalent of the NSA, essentially) was arrested on suspicion of contravening the Official Secrets Act.
As of 27 June, it would appear that the Crown Prosecution Service was still deciding whether or not to charge the employee, but she was fired.
If the story was made up, then no official secrets were leaked, and there would be no case for the arrest or any charges.
Of course, being hyper-paranoid, it's possible that the story was made up within some government agency, which would still make it an official secret...
