Re:Not bad
Define "short term" because here in Ontario, we're at ~16 years and the costs just keep going up. It's completely screwed up the electricity system of Ontario as well. So much so that even the government that parroted it for over a decade is say well, we screwed up. You know why they're saying that? Because they're about to go from a majority to a non-party and are trying to salvage themselves.
Now the kicker is people use less electricity and the prices keep going up, just like how they claimed that "ToD" meters would make electricity cheap. And the costs of it kept going up. This whole idea of paying via FiT and green energy rebates doesn't work and only makes people poorer. Hell it drives businesses out, which means governments need to find new tax bases. So who are the first taxed? Shouldn't be hard for anyone to figure out, but if you need a hint, it's not businesses. And the Federal Liberal Party is pushing for this exact same garbage on Canada.

Re:Legalised Marijuana and UBI
This isn't really a big thing. Legalized marijuana isn't likely going to happen, and that's the realm of federal government. And the Trudeau government keeps pushing it back, then changing their mind, then walking away from it and so on. Likely nothing will happen despite I believe the 4th or 5th time in the last year and half they've promised something on it.
The UBI test program is the realm of the province of Ontario, and is only being tested in one area. That one area is in the asshole of nowhere, that already gets a "northern living allowance($1k/mo)" on top of the UBI(in Canada, living in the "far north" you get suplemented income because it costs $8/gal of milk, $5/loaf of the $1.29 bread in the south, $25 for a 12 pack of pop and so on). The area also has high unemployment, though not as high as some other parts of southern ontario that haven't recovered from this current government driving businesses out of the province. Especially with the belief that "Ontario doesn't need industry" "extremely high energy prices are a-okay." Because right now, people are already making the "roof over head, food, or electricity" choice and the costs haven't even really hit. And now it's a case of how the fuck are we gonna pay for this. Unless the provincial liberals scrap all the other programs, UBI won't survive. Meaning, unemployment, workmans comp-basic coverage, welfare and so on will all have to go away.
Keep in mind that this is also likely an attempt to bolster their voting power, because they're in such poor shape that if an election was held today in Ontario, the Liberal Party would lose official party status and the Progressive Conservative Party(PC's) with any leader--anyone at all would gain super-majority status. People like to pretend that "green energy" is the salve that will fix all ills, and make cheap, limitless energy and so on. In Ontario? That's not the case. Energy is expensive, people who are middle class are struggling to make ends meet. The poor who were hard pressed before that? They're not making ends meet. The waiting list for subsidized housing is between 4-6 years in most of Ontario. Food banks run dry all the time now, charities that help the poor for fuel/electricity/NG(for heating), run out of funds before 1/3 of the winter season is over.
If Trudeau's carbon plan goes through? I won't be surprised if you see riots over energy costs start up here, people can't afford it.

Re:US forcing their laws on Europe AGAIN
Happens more often than you would think. I don't know when the "last" time was, but in 2013 it occurred.

Re:Dear Canada:
Skippus, the current government we have up here was elected by fraudulent means.
They're actively blocking the investigation into voter oppression with the line "They should have filed the complaint before they found out about the fraud!" The head investigator into the biggest case of voter oppression had his budget cut by seven million dollars and was forced into early retirement last week. A recent court decision found that fraudulent votes for a CPC candidate were greater than the difference, forcing a by-election.
The party has plead guilty to breaking election law in the last three elections, and responded by appointing those that did the fraud into Senate positions. (Our senate is appointed for life!)
That sounds to me like a coup happened. A silent coup. Like Quebec's Quiet Revolution, but malevolent.
The 80% of us that did NOT vote for the current bag of asshats are waiting patiently for the investigations to conclude.
Far too patiently, if you ask me. Far too patiently...
Stewie's lucky it's not the US or he'd be leaving Parliament Hill in a custom-fitted pine suit.
I am mad enough to riot and drag people bodily from the Hill.
I like that image: custom-fitted pine suit. And, as for dragging people from the Hill -- when are "the troops" going to do what they do in tin-pot dictatorships and throw the government out (or in prison) and force new elections? That would be the ultimate (and most delicious) irony: the troops imprisoning "support out troops" Harper.
And it's insightful - we're precariously close to the 4th box to use in defense of liberty (1: soap box, 2: ballot box, 3: jury box, 4: ammo box).
Posting anon to preserve mod points (Maow).

Re:Written by an industry insider?
Well then here's your first. http://www.680news.com/news/local/article/248658--alannah-myles-shares-tragic-health-news-with-canada-day-crowd
TORONTO, Ont. - The crowd at Woodbine Park cheered loudly as Canadian rocker Alannah Myles was about to take the stage at one of the summer festivals taking place on Canada Day.
However, the tone changed as the "Black Velvet" singer was carried on and helped seated onto the piano bench using two canes. Although she seemed unable to move her head or neck, her voice sounded great as she played a few songs that really got the crowd rocking.
Finally, Myles explained to the audience that she had overdone chiropractic treatments, having some 500 treatments over three years, and had suffered some severe spinal damage.
She is unable to move her neck and head.

I have a rare condition
My condition is rare: I don't listen to music by choice, pretty much ever. But I love talk shows on our radio in Toronto, the AM 1010, 640 and half useful news only 680.
These are the stations that I listen to, they are not on FM radio, unfortunately, so the quality is not the same as what the music stations get, but whatever. I like these stations because they are not politically correct, even though some hosts are (and of-course there is gov't regulation about cleanliness of speech, but it's OK, though some swearing doesn't hurt anyone and you can hear it after 9PM on the same stations). These stations have show hosts who actually do discussions, not preaching like the US Clearchannel, there is difference of opinion between hosts, and people can truly participate in discussions that are meaningful. Stuff about local, regional and global politics, economy and sometimes just discussing stupid things that happen every day.
That's my radio, and I actually would pay a few bucks a month for it if it wasn't available for free (ad supported) on AM anyway.

Re:It's a shame its too late for Sarah's last albu
Well, in practice, I don't know if any Canadian artists have ever received any money from the blank media levy, but I'm pretty certain that Sarah won't be seeing anything now, now that Nettwerk has withdrawn from the CRIA.

Re:Comparison with wiretap
According to 680news The Government here wants to be able to get:
1. your name
2. phone number and cell
3. Address
4. and technical data that identifies a computer's co-ordinates on the Internet - your ip
The article covers a few reasons why they want to obtain your personal info, but it sounds to me like they're using voip finally as the excuse to get us to log activity over the net. Once we do that, then we'll be able to give them customer info concerning anything else too. -
Ain't true - according to Intel
I was listening to a Toronto all-news radio station (AM 680 News) and they have said that Intel refutes the article saying they are not in any specific talks with Corel...
Corel's Michael Cowpland claims to be in "multi-faceted" talks with Intel... whatever that means...
