I cant get over the number of people who drool over each new product google hits the market with. Does it bother anyone else that all google wants is to know more about you?? from their Desktop Search software: Google Desktop Search may collect certain non-personally identifiable information that resides on your computer, including, without limitation, the number of searches you do and the time it takes to see your results.
Search engine, sure. Any of their other software, no thanks.
I'm truly curious how the distro's manage security on their servers. Does the project dedicate someone to look after security on their machines or is this something that is neglected? By that i mean do admin/developers just get caught up in 'developing' that they forget security? No doubt being a devel server, i can understand somewhat but can anyone explain the process a little better?
I would also venture a guess and say that the 25% they're talking about here are the servers they've sold that come pre-installed with Redhat. We buy our servers from Dell without an OS, but we still use linux.
I agree. From the Google Desktop Search Terms and Conditions http://desktop.google.com/privacypolicy.html: The Google Desktop application indexes and stores versions of your files and other computer activity, such as email, chats, and web history. How nice.
The last Dell I bought came with My Way Search Assistant, and it wouldnt remove itself from the add/remove programs list.
I have to agree with you. I am a big hockey fan; I regularly check the scores of hockey games - usually off of nhl.com. But since they've built they're site off of Flash, I was forced to memorize the url to the scores page which otherwise is only accessible from a Flash link on their homepage. Yeah I could have checked another site for the scores, but I didnt want to break routine. So here, my super-duper FreeBSD desktop that had me playing America's Army, frustrated me enough to try another distro that could at least give me back the web-browsing-bare-minimums that supported Flash. Its a real shame that these little pieces cant get sorted out or I would likely have stuck with FreeBSD on the desktop.
I wonder if they'd get the point when they day after that I cancel my contract.
In my experience, if a customer can consistantly saturate a high speed link (~2Mb or greater) over the course of a month, then they'd likely be costing the ISP money. It doesnt make much sense to have you as a customer under these circumstances. I'd be more than happy to show you the door. Go rape my competitors network instead:)
But the fact is -shit rolls downhill. ISPs will continue to sell you bandwidth this way because their upstream providers use the same technique.
from BlakeRoss.com Update: I see a lot of organizations covering this story and quoting me as the "official" source, but the only officials qualified to speak in that capacity are spokesmen from each company.
Do you ever you listen to news radio or TV and their main story of the hour is about some useless fact or something that falls in the "Not-quite-news" category? Something like "Theives are targeting I-POD owners!". Like its supposed to shock listeners. Its kinda the same when slashdot has nothing important to tell us about, they dip their hand in the * * Beatles Beatles shit-pile and pull out some news-filler. But it keeps us coming back doesnt it!?!
to go further with your point about comparing linux with windows, are they comparing the kernel itself? cause if not, then you cant compare the many distros of linux to only one version of windows. linux distros differ too much to title 'one thing compare to hundreds of things.'
According to 680news The Government here wants to be able to get:
1. your name
2. phone number and cell
3. Address
4. and technical data that identifies a computer's co-ordinates on the Internet - your ip
The article covers a few reasons why they want to obtain your personal info, but it sounds to me like they're using voip finally as the excuse to get us to log activity over the net. Once we do that, then we'll be able to give them customer info concerning anything else too.
Yep. One company's folly, is another person's glee. I would say the person with the biggest smile over this whole thing, is the person who first found Sony's rootkit. Picture a coat hanger in someones mouth.
Let them know that "Use IE" is not an acceptable answer.
No Kidding. What happens if I use linux on my home pc? that kinda rules out the internet banking for me. I wonder if they'd suggest I run down to the local internet cafe and use one of the public terminals.....maybe save a few passwords while im at it.
robot sharks with rocket-packs?
You must mean, sharks with frickin' lasers attached to their heads?

GNU Cash commercial:
1 hand-me-down computer: 0$
linux operating system: 0$
gnucash download: 0$
a free solution: priceless.

And it turned out to be one fo the most successful consoles ever.
Successful as in....? Does anyone know who sold more consoles, Sony or MS with their PS2/Xbox consoles?
The shit is most definitely spyware.

but I don't quite get why Ubuntu and not just Debian, especially if it's for servers
Perhaps considering that debian has had a slow release cycle, differing from ubuntu where you get fresher software on the desktop and the server.
Flash on FreeBSD is rather a joke...

...etch (the codename for the forthcoming release, due in December)...
was anyone else surprised that the etch release date is this december?

As in North or South America?
My choice is CLI, there are so many programs written for it and it is not intuitive at all, just like a system interface should be."
How well do your movies run on the cli? Sorry, but some people NEED a gui, and not because they need a dumbed down interface...

im confused, i didnt think sony had a linux port for their rootkit?

And the UN wants to kill your children...
By UN, you mean United Nothing. In that case, I agree.
The article never goes into detail as to why google wants to blanket the city with its wireless. I feel sorry for the ISPs in that town....
Sony's Anti-piracy software wont seem to install itself on my distro of linux. Anyone else had the same problem? ;)
