I think it's going to be the iProduct.

Re:Facebook is a public place
So, I repeat, do yourself a favor, and shut the fuck up before you really piss me off.
Internet tough guy says what? Seriously, lighten up, Francis. Threatening violence or using bold tends to have an effect inverse to your intention to be more right or earn additional credibility. Didn't they teach this in internet school before you received your license to post?

What is "better than Apple" mean?
At one time, I thought it meant better at graphics, audio and visual editing and creating. That, of course, was a myth in that Adobe products do the same stuff on a Mac as on a PC. It can't be the visual interface of the Apple can it? If that were all it would take, Microsoft would have done something to make Windows such eye-candy that Apple couldn't have kept up with the changes. They knew it wasn't just the look all by itself. Then what could it be?
BRANDING!
Apple is one of the most well-developed brands on the market. People think Apple is cool. People are falling all over themselves to get iPods and iPhones. Why? Not because of their quality, versatility or portability... there are loads of devices that beat iPod and iPhone hands-down in those areas individually and collectively. It's that damned Apple branding that is setting stuff. This page >> http://www.aboyandhiscomputer.com/show.php?ItemID=2204 illustrates my point perfectly.
Beating that kind of brand development with Linux won't be easy and might even be impossible.
And even if brand recognition weren't the whole picture, there would be the availability of the apps people know and think they need like Adobe Photoshop or the like. These things aren't going to appear natively for Linux... not for a long time anyway and not until the Linux Desktop has significant presence. So here we have a chicken vs. egg situation
... or a catch 22... whatever. You get the idea.Linux can beat Microsoft, but I'm not so sure about Apple.

-1 Sour Grapes
Since I personally do not identify with this product, I can't see it as anything but a fad type of thing. Anything Apple sells is an instant initial success... especially lately. But at least iPod, just like all portable music players, have long had an established market... it's just newer technology to deliver the same end. Video is something relatively new. We have actually had the ability to create and use portable video devices for a very long time. Most of the smaller Mini-DV camcorders have a large enough screen to work to that end. It hasn't had enough market demand to drive the creation of such devices. And portable TVs are largely the same -- remember those "Bentley" branded miniature TVs that ended up as give-aways in sales promotions? How about the plethora of similar devices once for sale at Radio Shack?
This is not a product they should have made. If it is largely successful for longer than a month or two after Christmas, I will be VERY surprised. iPods are good. The video thing is a fad that won't last long... that's my prediction anyway. -

depends: function or bragging rights?if you're looking for a really solid system which will last you for quite some time, the answer is "now". Apple hardware remains useful for a good stretch longer than hardware in the PC world. anything you buy new from Apple today will still be totally respectable two years from now, and still comfortable well beyond that. that aside, Apple is always "about" to come out with some great new something-or-other. that's the thing, that's why people love Apple: they actually continually innovate. they're always going to update or upgrade something a few months after you buy. would it be better if they just sat still?
if you're looking for bragging rights, simply wait until a product announcement (usually at one of the semi-annual shows). buy that day.
the only thing that's worth waiting for at this point is Tiger: the OS advances at a bit more of a steady state, and we have a pretty good idea what's going to be in it (and let me tell you, the dev previews of things like Dashboard look pretty sweet). of course, you can buy a mac now and buy Tiger later if the new features are useful to you; you get to start using a mac now (a big win!), and can upgrade or not as you see fit.Am I going to get burned by a sluggish overpriced laptop...
no. Apple does not make any such thing. their current lowest-end laptop comes stock with a 1.2Ghz and 256 MB of ram (okay, you're going to want a bit more than that, but it's not ludicrous); nothing that qualifies as being in the same neighborhood as "sluggish". it also starts at $999, which is a far was from "overpriced" for anything with similar performance (not to mention usability, reliability, &c.). -
a better linkMonsterzero seems to be refusing to display the page if you come to it by cliking a slashdot link. So, clik this google search, then take the top link.
A couple of interesting links showed up while I was lloking for this, too. It seems that the holders of the *zilla copyright are about as uncouth as Godzilla itself: square-zilla and davezilla.
