Re:When is a bank not a bank
https://deskshop.discovercard.com/thincard/thinclient.html
You might not have a Discover Discover card, but a Discover card issued by another bank.
I wrote a javascript bookmark so I don't have to sign it just to open another window.
https://www.accountonline.com/Athena/PageServlet/thinclient.prod.xsl?loginlib=loginlib&issuerid=1&brand=Citi is Citi Mastercard's.

Re:Citibank and Firefox
Citibank is the issuing bank for many popular retail credit cards. Their account access site (with the name of "Account Online" https://www.accountonline.com/) is not tested for any browsers other than IE
I have a account in Poland with Citibank, the access site is www.online.citibank.pl. I tend to use the English site (because I prefer English language) and I can tell you it is fully compatible with Firefox, Safari, IE etc.
Seems this is a issue limited to the American Citibank. -
Citibank and FirefoxCitibank is the issuing bank for many popular retail credit cards. Their account access site (with the name of "Account Online" https://www.accountonline.com/) is not tested for any browsers other than IE.
I worked for one of their clients (one of the largest retailers in the world) and despite repeated requests, Citi would not code new functionality to anything but IE. My client tested in various browsers including Firefox and invariably would find multiple errors. Citi simply refused to correct any errors that would not replicate in IE. Some of the errors were profound (from an end user perspective) but Citi would not budge.
Now that Citi has slashed their IT group and is ramping up outsourcing efforts I don't imagine that this situation will be improving any time soon.

Re:Public needs to change to make the change...
Why not tell us who the bank is? I use Washington Mutual and except for a stupid AUTOCOMPLETE=off it works fine. And my CitiBank credit cards through Accountonline.com work find in FireFox, too.

Virtual account numbers
Citibank offers virtual account numbers. Don't know if it works under WINE.
Basically, you have an app with a secure connection, and everytime you want to use your card you can generate a one-time number. You can set a limit on it too. Even if the merchant's security sucks, no one can use that number again.
Having had to replace my cards after that Egghead fiasco a while back, this gives me at least a little more peace of mind. -
Re:mastercard sucks
As far as I can see, it'd be possible to reduce the risks for all concerned, but since this would cost the CC companies money, I don't see it happening until someone legislates it, or someone big enough (Amazon?) starts demanding they do it.
Citibank is already doing it. The cost to the credit card companies is minor. The benefit to the merchants is pretty significant. The problem is you need to give consumers an incentive to use it, and the cost of that incentive should likely be borne by the merchant.
