Re: Why stop there?
Football/basketball pays for the rest of the sport programs.
I do hope you're kidding:
28 Top tier Div1 teams spending more than they make
Schools prop up their football programs with student fees
Only 8 schools broke even or better in a 5 year period
Schools play loose with numbers to show athletics programs as more profitable to the university when those "profits" are really earmarked for athletics scholarships
And finally, just to blow the entire set of "profitability" out the window, note that most universities don't include a whole host of associated costs into the calculation of whether their programs are profitable. That last one basically calls into question any previous studies that do not explicitly account for a host of expenses that should be rolled into any sports program. Essentially regular students/parents/loans are paying for the sports programs at all universities with the potential exception of less than a literal handful. -
Re:Why does that bother you?
NCAA found all but 20 lose money:

This article considers the viewpoint that sports may help drive enrollment, but finds overall most schools don't make any money on football or basketball:

Re:What about men going to college?
Possibly because you're exaggerating. In 2012 the gap was 56/44. So 1.27 women for every man. It probably doesn't get reported on very often since women have outnumbered men in terms of total enrollment since 1979. One explanation might be that there are many more professions that are male-dominated but that don't require a college degree. Skilled tradesman, for example. Construction. Anything where physical strength is a prerequisite. So if you're a man who doesn't seem cut out for college then you have options. If you're a woman then, perhaps, you have fewer options. So there's greater motivation to get a degree.
It might also be worth noting that the gender gap decreases substantially among "traditionally aged" students (24 and under) as family income rises. So the gender imbalance is coming from poorer students and older students. -
Re:Tell me again...
Interestingly enough, those that spend money on the sport programs do so voluntarily and not as a condition of tuition or tax.
wrong: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com...
and in the case of large programs, almost completely isolated and self sufficient.
There are only about seven of those: http://www.acenet.edu/news-roo...
This only took a few seconds of googling. I'm sure with a bit more effort, you could find how completely your position is divorced from reality.

Re:uncle sam (will) say so
Without getting into if CALEA is applicable in the RIAA versus the world scenario; there has actually been a good bit of debate concerning how/if it applies to networks provided by universities.
It would appear that Uncle Sam has more or less said, "it depends". For more details see the following:

Re:Censored and discriminated
I think that most of the time, the best qualified get the jobs, but it's certainly not the end of the story. American corportations are some of the most prolific advocates of Affirmative Action. Ford, Exxon, Bank of America, Xerox, etc, etc.
I don't know what the exact percentages are, and they certainly vary from company to company, but I don't think it's unreasonable to assume it's similar to college rates, typically 10%. -
Re:What SHOULD have been asked, but wasn't:
a funny comment, considering canadians score better overall than americans in high school tests.
