Re:*gasp*
every day there is an artical about rights being oppressed in countries and anti-terror campaigns, but this is ridiculious.
Dear UK people, it would be a good idea to invest in somthing like anonet today since soon your msn/skype/aim/yim/gmail/email/computers/routers/an d anything else thats digital and has information will be also tied into this database *if* they get it together, also the government will be the least of your worries, just wait for the employers start getting access... lets just say, i'd trust a drug dealer with this information more than i would trust a . not only that, think about when you sign up for health insurance, they'll be like `dear sir, we know you lied on your application, we have seen you have purchased excessive tobacoo and alcholic substances in the last year`.
laugh at me if you must, it will be abused, hacked, sold, stolen, exposed at some point -
Yet another reason...
...to get out of the mainstream internet and check out anonet http://anonet.org/. Much more comfortable knowing your online experience is VPN'd, so your idiot ISP can't make a blunder and share your info with the world!

Re:A new dawn for the Internet
"Some of these people have gathered and joined forces to build their own version of the Internet. An Internet for the people and by the people. One such implementation may be found at http://anonetnfo.brinkster.net/ and http://anonet.org/ "
Oh, lord! Here's a very small clue. Unless you own both end-points and the middle, then it can never be your internet. Sneaking around will not do it, especially when you consider the physical nature of the internet. -
A new dawn for the Internet
The next internet is already being implemented by hobbyists, idealists and realists. There are those who want information to be free, those who want the Big Government(TM) to keep their hands off, those who feel that it's time to take the 'net back. These people are like you and me: they are tired of reading about the latest threats made by the RIAA/MPAA to bend laws to their twisted will. They are tired of knowing that bills introduced by the government to Combat $concept(TM) will be abused by special interest groups. They are fed up with the Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt being planted by media and corporations.
Some of these people have gathered and joined forces to build their own version of the Internet. An Internet for the people and by the people. One such implementation may be found at http://anonetnfo.brinkster.net/ and http://anonet.org/
This is not a darknet of paedophiles, script kiddies and warez traders. It is an independent effort by those who think that the Internet can be more than a money making scheme by Big Business or tool for brainwashing the masses.
Go on, take the blue pill. Wonderland is waiting. -
Re:welcome to 1995?
better news would have been to mention anonet since its vpn based it can transverse 99% of firewalls, not for malicious activity but to stop network admins spying on what you do, with the ability to use with randomly assigned ip addresses its also a great way to connect home to work securly.

MOD PARENT UP
For those of us who disagree, there is a movement called anoNet that created a seperate internet. In early 2005, a few people fed up with the way the Internet was heading, began in earnest to create a large wide area network that was secure and lived in its own space. On this new network anyone would be free to do as they saw fit - roam about, host services, or just be social without fear of being monitored or even worse censored. The first step to bring this network to fruition was to encrypt the information that normally travels across the Internet. anoNet is a full IP network with many users, an IRC network, wiki, SILC, email, web, PGP, and much much more. For more information: http://www.anonet.org/ or http://anonetnfo.brinkster.net/

Re:The Truth Will Come Out
i love the way the press manipulate everything to make a big buck, but i also like the way they expose coverups and fuck ups, atleast they can start using anonet.

Re:I have a better question.
thats why some of us are taking our own action anonet.org if anyone wants to front some cash to buy our own island/country or a cruise ship, we'll happily move, i believe there are still 3 unclaimed areas of the world still, antartica might be ok since it'll cool our equipment for free.

Re:Avoid the Risk--Use Zfone
lets hope not, even if it were the prime minister and not the king i bet he couldn't break the encryption on anonet yes its time for these networks, call them what you like but they guarantee freedom for all.
-
Re:I'd assumed they'd done this already.
yes they are already blocking http://anonet.org/ and all of its subdomains but intermitantly, its a great tool, i just hope the chinese doesn't block VPN's next! for those in china, use tor to access the site, same goes for those in the _peoples republic of amerika, franKe, germEny oh and soon engFand.

A solution exists
My advice is, start the planning stages for the next internet, and then when there is the will to bring it forward, bring it forward.
The next internet is already being implemented by hobbyists, idealists and realists. Re:Let me defend the law
Eventually they're going to try and make it illegal to encrypt your communication with an algorithm lacking an integrated government decryption key. Stop 'em now.
If you are really serious about trying to do something NOW before it is too late, you may want to check out anoNet. It is a vast departure from Freenet or TOR.
It is a complete IP network built with VPNs and Quagga for routing. It puts the power back in the hands of the individual.
I have been a part of that network for over a year now and while it is not perfect, it is certainly a step in the right direction.
Entrench your freedom NOW, before they can take it from you. -
Re:This just in
Not bypassable by Joe Average or as it is in Spain that should actually be Pedro Promedio
I've found that the average Joe has no trouble using OpenVPN. All you do is double click on a configuration file and the entire network connection is setup, DNS and all. VPN Networks like anoNet (http://anonet.org/) provide unlimited access to the data (porn) and services (P2P) that users want. The user never has to worry about the heavy hand of The Man, as all links are encrypted with rotating keys.

Re:How stupid.
just goes to show that governments should not be given power over the internet, can you imagine if they got control of the root servers too? that would be ridiculious, besides isn't sending an email a form of file sharing?
as i said it before, there is a growing need for networks such as anonet to free people from persecution in repressed countries, i'll just add spain to the list, i might not have anything to hide but then again if i want to share a file i created with a friend i will, if you build it i will find a way to get around it.
should we blame the governments or their advisors, or should we blame the people that build these type of things to restrict us?
if you are one of the following, please erase your mind: drone, sheeple, religious or government robot. if you are not one of them, please stand up and say somthing. -
Re:Welcome to America Junior.
i agree with parent on the fact that programs like this have a different aggenda, not everyone wants the `powers that be` to have somthing on them, look at the people working on anonet, they have got so fed up of the current internet and started to form their own over the top using VPN's. not only that, they also offer a somthing that projects like tor cant do, true ip access! you no longer need to find a way to proxy applications, just download a vpn client like OpenVPN and play.
i am so stoked that there are people out there that still care about their anonymity like me, even if i have nothing to hide, i dont want to be tracked and profiled by the type of browsing i do, and not have everything coming back to huant me. if you are a real geek theres plenty of space for you on anonet, plenty of networking stuff going on.
i hate to say it now but there is a thin line between repressed countrys such as china and iran compared to 'land of the free' america and now canada, england, france, germany and probably more, take back what belongs to you, have the choice to view what you want at your discresction without being profiled. -

Re:Time to start encrypting *everything*.
Agreed.
Only concern I have is if encryption becomes widespread then they will scrutinize the data end-points even more. Right now they claim not to listen to messages but put together a database of connections to sift through.
Being that they now hold you w/o rights if they only say you're a terrorist, visiting or messaging the wrong site/person/entity could get you a trip to camp.
I believe one would want to mask their identity as well as their message. Nothing is perfect, but if you can find one person to trust, you can hide behind them. The more people you have cooperating, more hops to travel, the harder it will be to take down the individual of interest. This works even better when nearly everyone has encrpyted channels coming through their lines.
How to accomplish this? Plenty, one I've been a part of is a virtual, private internet. It is based on open standards and can handle any layer 4 protocol, without modification. This means you can host any service that you are able to on the Internet, with the same ease (or lack of).

Re:Petition vs. Solution
We have all the tools we need. Check out OpenVPN http://openvpn.net/ Plus, a VPN network _does_ infact exist. It's called anoNet (which I have posted about before on this article, but is more appropriate in this thread). You can find all the details at http://anonet.org/ Plus, Freenet tends to be laggy from my experience.

Not a short term solution
I am interested in seeing what will happen in November. But for the time being there is a faster solution. anoNet is a VPN network which operates just like the Internet but without the influence of the government. All communications are encrypted and uncensored. People are free to say whatever they want to without fear of persecution. We use the 1.0.0.0/8 IP range, so it is impossible to geographically identify a user based on their IP. It is 100% anonymous. Interested? Visit http://anonet.org/ for details.
