Re:What the article doesn't specify...
Actually, I'd say they're very much for downloading music on the web...as long as it's from Archambault.

Sure Videotron will do thisVideotron is owned by Quebecor. Quebecor owns several music producers and distributors, like Select, Musicor and Trans-Canada. Also, Quebecor owns Archambault, which is one of the largest (if not the largest) CD retailer in Quebec.
It's clear to me that using FUD, Quebecor (using Videotron) wants to raise up the profits in its music division.
My 0.02$.

what canada is this article living in?
In real stores in Canada you have to pay 14 - 26 $CAD for a CD before tax, which is 16 - 30 $CAD with tax. An example. And another example. In my experience 10$ is a rare occurance, and certainly not the "average price" of a CD anywhere I've ever shopped.
The article says:
According to CRIA's own numbers, revenue from prices of an average CD in 2004 was C$10.95, down 8.8 percent from C$12.00 per CD in 1999.
Seems he's quoting revenue, not the sale price to the end consumer. If it's actually true that each CD brings in that much revenue, then CD prices are very very inflated. -
Oh yeah!
That's *so* good! Its just sad that Videotron are such a jerk company, which are probably still willing to collaborate with the CRIA.
Videotron is the cable / ISP division of Quebecor, which sales music records through Archambault and also produce records for its "artistic" reality show, Star Academie. That's why they are so eager to give names to the cria.

Quebecers, time to switch over Bell/Cogeco.
Montreal-based Groupe Videotron Ltee. is the only service provider to say it will fully co-operate.
As another poster said, thats logic since Videotron is owned by Quebecor Media, that owns Archambault which already have an legal online MP3 download.
My concern about that is the quasi monopol videotron has about home internet service. Fortunately for us, you can always switch to DSL with Bell's Sympatico (they just announced faster download/upload speeds, im reaching 80k upload). Bell AFAIK dont have any business in the music industry and wont offer help (at least not that easily) to the CIRA or whatever its called.
I dont know bout cables alternatives, though. -
