Re:Just think....I think the standard unit of mass should be William "The Refrigerator" Perrys. Unsing diameter, its about 95 WTRPs
Of course, we need to convert 120,000 km to Miami-LA trips, so thats 27.95 MiaLAs.
The speed should be converted into either the speed of light or, among geeks, the air speed velocity of a swallow.

Re:It's not "pouring tons of money"Patents aren't about new discoveries. They are about money. The first to "invent" something completely new deserves a patent. However, being the first to patent something that nature created does not deserve a patent.
You are right about what patents *should* be for. You'd think that the "prior art" and "non-obvious" restrictions on patents would prevent such absurdities from happening.
"we've been growing that rice for 1000 years" = prior art!!!!
Sigh, but basing anything on the assumption that the PTO has one damn lick of sense is not very realistic these days. I'm submitting my patent application for hydrogen hydroxide .

Now while it may seem ind of silly at firstI know why SF is mad about this and wants IBM to knock it off. It's not even really the matter of grafitti, it's the matter of free advertising. If they let this go unpunished then all the dumb
.comers will think this is a GREAT cheap way to advertise. Remember, these are the same guys that think bulk e-mail is a good sales tool. There would be a frenzied rush to put ads on the side walk, soon all available space would be used up! The .comares would grow frantic and start beating eachother to death with lead pipes in a frenzy to get any available space!!! So to aver.....Wait, hang on..... Spammers beating each other to death.....
So in conclusion, the city of SF is evil and wrong. IBM should be allowed to proceed as they wish, as should all the little spam.com companies. When the lead pipes come out, things will turn out for the best.

Re:According to the Bible (for what it's worth)
Is something invalid just because it's in the Bible? (And, for that matter, who are you to ridicule somebody for their religious beliefs, as your post implies?)
I am the lizard king. Or, I'm a human. We all judge everyone and everything all day, but in the end, it's how you treat people that counts. For that matter, this applies to this discussion as well.
If old books seem stupid, you could try reading, f'rinstance, Robert Heinlein, he held a few of the same beliefs. Or you could work out your own set of beliefs to stand by; provided they don't break any laws, there's no harm in that.
Heinlein is also pretty down on religion. The ironic thing is that he's not big on people believing what they read, but he's an author and he puts his opinions about how people ought to live into ever book.
You could even post on slashdot, for all the world to see, your personal beliefs so that somebody else can take potshots at them because they happen to be based on a book. (I find it quite likely that, no matter what your beliefs, they've been previously published somewhere, so it should be fairly easy.)
I'm more than happy to share my beliefs with you all.

Re:Could be worse: Syzgzy? Ibiblio? If you do a google search on ximian then you come up with the following funny link...
Some important lessons for you
... The genitalia of the Ximian red ape is quite visible between its legs, but don't attempt to disable it with a strike to that region. It has almost no nerve ...

PIC16F84 programmingHere's some info on PIC programming:
ftp://ftp.armory
.co m/pub/user/rstevew/PIC/DaveTait/picprog.htmlThis file contains links to plans for building really cheap but functional PIC programmers. I've done it before; it's not too hard.
These are really cool little chips.

older stuff
I found a link to an article about a lot of old computers and their (often proprietary) operating systems...mainly 8-bit systems. The article is kind of long, and there's a lot of hardware issues that are worked into the discussion, but there's some neat OS stuff in there.
There doesn't appear to be much out there about any old mainframe OSes...my father used to use a mainframe in college (late 1960s...punchcards and all) and claims that he doesn't recall what the OS was. Oh well, what else would you expect from a business major? =)

3D Graphics no substitute for 3D Characters
It ought to go w/o saying that 3D Graphics is no substitute for 3D Characters. I'd be happy to play 2D games for the rest of my life if all characters are well developed. Give me Sam and Max any day over Duke Nukem. With this 'build it bigger and better' attitute, a game of (2D) Monopoly (which is still sold in an analog form) would weigh more than a tank and occupy a floor of your house.

An "Average Geek" speaks out on the Slashdot Test
The Slashdot Purity Test suffers from some of the same minor flaws as the Hacker Purity Test from which it appears to draw its inspiration. Some of the questions that garner points should be turned around, such as:
123. Did you check your user info page to answer the above question?
I would have worded that, "Did you know your Karma without checking because you've looked at your User page in the past hour?"
Some of the other questions contradict each other. For example:
64. Do you ever forget to use the Preview button?
65. ...and later wish you remembered?
66. Have you ever previewed your post several times to get it ``just right''?
67. Do you think previewing is for weenies?
While it is a bit rough around the edges and should be labeled Version 0.1, it has potential, and it shows some understanding of the dynamics of Slashdot.
Oh, and it looks like it is being "used to gather demographic information". -

The best color isn't in the rainbow
What's so awful about having different colored computers?
There's nothing wrong with having several choices of color at all. I just wish one of the colors was a dark sinister Vader-helmet black! Of all the colors, they left out the coolest. Oooh yeah. To some people, you just can't get any more aesthetically pleasing than obsidian. Black is beautiful, baby! MMMMmmmmmmmmm....
Someone ought to add it to the Hacker Test as a way to lose points: how much performance would you be willing to trade for a black machine? Me? I'de trade about half!! Oooh, there goes my score...
