That's not the real interview!
From the FAQ page:
Did you really give an interview to IEEE?
in which you confessed that C++ was deliberately created as an awful language for writing unmaintainable code to increase programmers' salaries?
Of course not. Read the real IEEE interview.
The real interview is here:

Re:hmm, ttys..
From my own experience, VNC on the Mac is much more buggy than VNC on other platforms. The Linux (Unix) server is almost perfect (just one minor modification makes it run GNOME or KDE); the Windows server works fine for most things (if you don't have it poll the whole screen (which is slow) (and sometimes even if you do) some text elements in some windows won't get updated right, but it is still quite useful), and the Mac server looked like a bad hack. Maybe that is just my experience, but it crashing on every connect just doesn't seem like reliability to me. AT&T probably has a new version (the direct link is VNC - Virtual Network Computing from AT&T Laboratories Cambridge, courtesy of Google; check out their logo for today!).
VNC is really cool. It does not limit you to the X protocol, although the way the Unix server works is basically acting like an X server to X clients and a VNC server to VNC clients. This means it can work on OSes that have a closed window-update system, like Windows and Mac OS. It just polls windows for changes, if necessary, or updates windows when they receive a message, or whatever technique it wants (the two mentioned apply to the Windows server). Its advantages over an X server are that (1) the desktop is client-independant; you don't have to be running an OS on the client for which an X server has been written (there is a Java client!), and (2) for the Unix servers, if the client crashes or disconnects for any reason, the desktop stays as it was. An X server would dump all applications and you would lose your data, and (3) its compression rocks (better in many cases than GIF, and for a dynamic image!).
Yes, with a fast enough (and low-latency) link, you can play remote Quake. But why bother? Get your own!

Re:VNCA big problem with VNC in the corporate enviroment, compared to Citrix, is that you are remotely controling a single windows machine.
If you have 5 users who may need to access windows at the same time, you need 5 windows boxes to connect to using VNC. You could not get by with 1 "VNC Server" machine to serve separate windows desktops to multiple users at the same time.
An interesting implementation I would like to see would be a Linux box using VMWare to 'spawn' windows machines as people needed them and dynamically assign them out VNC requestors.

VNC
Dude! You need to try this program:

It has different benefits vs. disadvantages than citrix of course.
Here's a screenshot of what you want. :)

Oh yeah, it's GPL'd too.
I'd be curious to know if it works out for you. -

Re:Missing piece - XML data store
The vast majority of data in databases is relational, which means no hierarchies which are what "come naturally" to XML. Consequently, databse vendors (thats relational database vendors) are focussing on mediating data access via XML rather than data storage. There are various XML-and-database tools available for example Oracle's XSQL Servlet, and I know that DB2 offers storage support for XML documents (as in store an XML document in the database, not use XML to store relational data)but a lot more work needs to be done on data modelling and querying with XML in mind before it'll be ready for prime time as a database format (Speaking of which you might want to take a look at Lore and XML-QL )

Tarantella is a derivative of VNC
IIRC Tarantella is based on VNC, you can find out more about the technical details of VNC on the UK AT&T website. The basic idea is to use a very simple protocol with most of the work done at the server end allowing the clients to be very simple. For example I have seen pictures of KDE running on someones cell phone using VNC.

Re:If I have a screen, why waste it on a human heaActually, research done at AT&T Labs has shown that a head helps with comprehension. Take a look here for examples of what they've been doing with text to speech. Then check out the examples with a talking head. It seems a little easier to listen to the voice when there's a head associated.
I often wonder why no one has done this before. the technology has been around for a while (there are just 16 different lip positions to re-create the entire English language). Just morph between them, and you've got realistic lip movement.
I've been interested in this sort of technology for years, since I first got a speech box for my Atari 8-bit. It came with a little program that would simulate lips on the montor while it spoke. Very crude, but effective.
The real question is what this will mean to current broadcast television. It should be possible to create text scripts that will take into account that my personal news will select different stories than yours, and write generic "bumper" text to chain stories together. This way, checking on my stocks on quote.yahoo.com becomes something that I do while eating dinner, sitting at the dinner table, instead of at the computer. This is a product for the set top, not the desktop.

Re:L&H RealSpeak
The best TTS engine I've found is AT&T's Next Generation TTS. The samples are amazing. Much better and so much more realistic than L&H's system. And they have developed a lip-synch system as well.
If Ananova can do anything like this than I'm never watching CNN again :) -
AT&T DjVu
I thought this article might be a good place to mention AT&T's DjVu image format. I have been working with their DjVu tools to develop quite a few web applications and they are phenominal. The format takes an image (it is designed for scanned documents) and creates an IW44 (wavlet compressed) background layer of the image and then creates a non-lossy overlay foreground layer to compress foreground components like text and lines.
The net result? 300 dpi full page scans in under 50K! When you print them, they are true enough to the original to justify the difference between a 5MB TIFF and the 50K DjVu.
I'm very glad to see some of the same technology being adopted into JPEG. I'm kind of dissapointed that the spec doesn't seem to allow the mixing of compression algorithm's inside of one image, which is what most all of the very very good compression methods seem to rely on -- the fact that different information in the same chunk of data can be optimally compressed in different ways. I mean, depending on the image, JPEG in some cases can smear wavlet-based methods into the dirt.
Just some food for thought...

Speech Recognition & Laptops
I have a shoulder related RSI and bought a laptop with a touchpad and Dragon Naturally Speaking Professional. The keyboard has a very light action which helps and the touchpad is way better than using a mouse. The reason why I got a laptop is that speech recognition works best in a quiet environment[1] and I like to be able to move around, and also, sometimes my talking gets distracting for people around me; and there is also the privacy issue to consider. Moreover, once you trained your Dragon its quite an investment, so your play machine == work machine.
I use the continuous speech program to write essays and letters etc., and for coding I use the discrete speech program together with XEmacs and lots of macros. I keep diffrent vocabularies for Perl, Java, LaTeX etc. Especially Lisp is great fun to code in with speech recognition!
This also works nicely with VNC[2], so, having to use Windows is bearable, esp since it can crash and my Linux desktops stays as it is. However, since I don't have MS Office installed, my laptop rarely if ever crashes.
I also mud with it (a great way of training your Dragon ;) and all in all, I think I'm faster now than I was before I got ill, especially now that my hand has nearly healed up[3] and I can interleave a little typing with speaking where its handy.
Shariz
[1] Once your Dragon is trained, it works very well even if you have music on.
[2] VNC is great!
[3] I'm painfree, i.e its not keeping me awake at night anymore, _but_ if I overdo it I definitly feel it immediatly. I don't expect it to ever go away totally, but then I also think that typing a lot is unhealthy by definition -- a lot of people I know have problems, and I think that we need to get round to thinking that typing 8 hours+ a day is simply not on! -
After the trial...
Microsoft probably won't want to try to conquer Linux. Sure they have the money and the influence, but Linux, to the DoJ and friends, embodies anti-Microsoft-monoply, and if Microsoft starts messing with Linux, DoJ will jump on them. Microsoft knows this.
Microsoft's high end is the desktop, and that's the last markey Linux will take over.
That's a telling point ... only after all the other markets have fallen.GNOME and KDE have made significant strides on making Linux a contender in the desktop environment. In some ways Linux has already overtaken Windows:
- Customization: How many window managers are there for Windows? How many are there for Linux?
- Remote Apps: What's X designed for? And why does the VNC server work best on Linux? Remote connectivity was a core design element for X.
- Stability: People get mad when their apps crash. People notice that for some reason their apps don't crash as much when they run them under Linux. Netscape seems to be an exception, at least for me.
- Cost: If two things were equal in every way except that one was $90 and one was free, which one would you buy? And what if it turned out that the free one was better?
I'm sure I missed a few. Sure, Win has its advantages. But they are probably not going to stay for long.

True Innovations
Things like VNC deserve to be on the list. As do some other truly innovative tools. PGP comes to mind. That single-chip WWW server that we slashdotted about two months back.
A port of Linux to a Rolex would be nice too. Linux on anything analog..
We really should extend our definition of 'hack' to beyond the computer realm, at least for a top-ten list.
While not hacks in the computer sense, the practical jokes that go on at MIT also deserve mention. I mean, turning buildings into giant VU meters for a concert... That's just plain COOL.
Mars Pathfinder (and Apollo 13 while out there).
The Blair Witch Project was a great hack. Both in the 'crude' sense of the word (badly made movie) and in the 'tweak' sense of the word, since the marketting was so subversive as to make many people BELIEVE it was a documentary.

Precisely what is slow is an issue...
I am familiar with TAO, and with ILU, and certainly know of MICO and omniORB. I suggest taking a look at the GnuPaghe Project; they went through an ORB selection process, and waffled back and forth between TAO and MICO, leaning back towards MICO because of compile time memory consumption. The finding on TAO was thus: Huge at compile time; I haven't done precise measures, yet it surely eats about 700 Mb while compiling it. This may be an exaggeration on the hugeness of TAO; there have certainly been similar reports on MICO. I've compiled some bits of ORBit code, and found it fairly appalling how 1K of IDL turned into compiled object code a hundred K or so in size; for C++-based stuff to be more lardly is not too much of a surprise. If it takes 128MB of memory to compile Hello, World! that can represent a significant barrier to the widespread adoption of CORBA.

AT&T Has OC-192 Internet - Re: Done Long BeforeAT&T fired up the OC-192 POS about a week ago. The first segment is Cambridge MA to New York. We're also running OC-48 POS across the country. The OC-192 boards for the Cisco GSR are brand new, - OC-48 support is much more mature in both the Internet and fiber mux markets, and even OC-48 is still a very large pipe. But internet traffic keeps doubling every 15 minutes or so, so it'll fill up soon enough

Re:"Go Away!" signs on the webYou are running on a platform other than a PC or a Macintosh. Unless you run on one of these platforms, you will be unable to access FOX.com.
I just loaded it under Opera 3.60 on Win98 with no problems. It did point out that I'm missing RealPlayer G2 and Macromedia Flash Player though.
Loading under IE5 on Win95 (I have to VNC for the Opera machine) it installed VB Scripting and still provided the same message. The only difference I could see between the two was the extra colours because I was VNCing in 8bit mode.
Now linux: VNC in 8 bit mode again (Netscape 4.51/Export). I certainly see what you mean, it tells me this.
I especially love the button on the bottom of that page ("Return to fox.com - just bounces you back again!)
Tried changing the User Agent string (using junkbuster) to Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 98) without success. Looked at the code and noticed that it's all done with Javascript. Turned off javascript - now the document "contains no data".
Decided I don't really want to see fox.comanyway!
Oh - lynx version 2.8.1rel.2 just gives [EMBED] for / and blank for
/frameset.html. -
It also broke VNC
I knew about this one over a week ago. Here is a description of the cause from the VNC mailing list.

Cheap, free solution : VNC
I control a network of 118 machines, mixed Linux, Solaris, QNX and all flavours of MicroSloth. I run ORL's VNC, which is GPL'd except for the QNX boxes which I use Phindows running under WINE for.
The great beauty of VNC is that you don't even need a graphics card in the PC, which more than pays for the network card that you do need.

Re:A better idea...
On that same note, there is always VNC
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ -
100Mbps LAN + vncI've tried the KVM thing. It didn't work very well, especially since I like high resolution displays (1280x1024+). I also had problems with video signal degradation, 'cause some of my cables wound up being REALLY long.
Then I found vnc.
My house is already networked with 24 ports of switched 100Mbit goodness. vnc was the icing on the cake. Cross-platform. Arbitrary window geometries and color depths AND I could still see what was going on with my main machine(s). With the price of a 2-node 100Mbit ethernet kit hovering just over $100US, I don't know if I'd ever bother with KVM
Caveat: I've tried vnc with machines that quite a bit slower than anything I have (the slow ones were 24MB RAM P200s with generic NICs and video cards), on a 10Mbit LAN. I won't say the word painful. I will say that you should maybe keep a newsreader or something open while you wait.
Still there's a certain joy in being able to play xdoom from a Windows box. I can do that. It's cool.
-
Re:A better idea...
Who cares? As long as they're either Windows or Linux boxen, use VNC to network them and you're done. It's free, it's open source, it works like a champ. Done.

Re:What is Workspot? While this is probably off-topic, let me just say that workspot.net is one of the neater applications I've seen on the web in a long time.
For those who don't know and haven't visited, workspot gives you the standard "stash your filez here" interface, but...there's this intriguing little tab up top labeled "Linux Desktop." You click on it, and are asked for the screen geometrics you want to use. A quick click later, and you're looking at a KDE desktop! Through the magic of AT&T's VNC Java viewer, you get your very own KDE session, where you can do whatever you'd normally do on a "regular" Linux box and account.
This is very neat, and I think I'll kill another hour playing with it.

James Clark? Geez...
I can understand why all those other names are there. I support Olivetti Research Lab(ORL), now AT for giving us VNC, the wonderful little piece of software. But some names simply should not be there...like:
James Clark: Give me a break, folks. What does this guy have to do with free software? Opening up Netscape source code was little more than a corporate maneuver to outsmart MS, IMHO, but look at where Netscape market share is now. Netscape still deserves a special award for being the only piece of software that's able to crash my Linux boxen, though. Show me a popular, usable open source project that was derived from Mozilla code and I will show you vaporware.
John Ousterhout: I guess Berkeley and Sun paid real low salaries, no? There are people who created languages that are far more popular than yours, Sir, but do they have a company? No. Not that it is a bad thing to make profit off your own creation...Either Ousterhout does not belong to the this list, or Larry Wall was really dumb not to go out on his own and start a company to make a fortune out of Perl. He would have showed up on the free software celebrities list anyway. -
See another screen--for free
VNC
Think "desktop telnet": you can view (and manipulate) another computer's desktop remotely. Yes, you do need a password and the computer's IP, but how many of us here are spies? (You can all put your hands down now.)
You can view a Windows machine from *NIX, a Mac, and vice versa. No need to install expensive, proprietary software to see those X apps run. (Unless you really need a lot of speed.)
Okay, I'm starting to sound like a marketroid. But seriously--this rocks. We're using it at my school, and we love it.
Oh, did I mention it's GPL'd? :-) -
How about VNCHas anyone considered VNC to serve X apps, one nice big cluster and a load of machines capable of booting a linux floppy with the SVGA VNC viewer could work as terminals, eg 386's with 8MB RAM.

Re:Still interested in the SunsHrm, that sounds like a good idea. I'll just set it up right now...
First, get the software
Then, with a bit of hacking around, and an ssh2 server, I should be able to get it working.... Hrm, (hacks madly)... Soon I'll be able to do this. THANKS!

Slightly different view of thingsFunny this question came up as I was considering asking something similar. I was wondering if perhaps we might consider looking at the problem from a different angle.
There seems to be agreement in the fact that the bandwidth and connectivity is increasing and soon may be as ubiquitous as the dialtone. That's a good thing.
A great deal of work is being done on web browsers to support more and more functionality. JavaScript, for examples, is an attempt to get programming in the browsers. Servlets are fine, but still constrained by the HTML widget set. Applets are problematic as Java support in browsers is problematic. And plugins are just plain problems.
Some folks have mentioned VNC as an alternative approach. Others mentioned X. How about a slightly different view.
Java seems to perform very well (at least where I work) on server side applications. So long as there is no GUI, the systems run great. This makes sense, as Java gives the developers a consistent processor/OS to code to. For non GUI apps, this is possible because most all OS have the same basic functionality (i.e. memory management, file system access, networking, process control, etc). The real differentiator is the user interfaces. All work differently (except Telnet
;-) ).So, why not create a viewer that is consistent and applications are written to it? I know X is sorta there, but there are some problems with client side requirements and no session saving.
What about building a browser that is nothing more than a canvas for paint commands and an event gatherer. Then, build graphics libraries for your favorite development tools (AWT.so, libx.so, Win32.DLL, etc) that use this viewer as the graphics context. Now we could run the applications anywhere.
How does this affect browsers? Well, instead of adding more and more functionality and rendering capability into the browser (XML+XSL, JavaScript, VBScript, etc), the web servers become the rendering engines. Put all the rendering at the server and just send the paint commands to the viewer.
This way users don't need to wait Until the browsers support what I need, or make different versions for different browsers. If new functionality is added to the server, then all users now see it.
I'm thinking something like the GGI project along with VNC (which there is a mapping to by the way), might get this type of project started.
I note that ATT labs which owns VNC is using it in conjunction with CORBA. They don't want to release that as they don't want to support it. But imagine the possibilities.
Sorry for the length of this post. Just thinking out loud.
