Alternatives
I switched from buying new CDs to buying used ones. It saves money and puts dents in the RIAA statistics.
Good idea, as is downloading legally free music and buying albums that aren't made by majors from decent shops.

Re:Music and programming
IAAMP (am a music producer) and I find that if you want to perform really well at a nite club to get the crowd rocking, you give them what they want - its as simple as that. Supply and demand.
Don't people want to actually see the person on stage actually doing something live though? Music performed by computers sounds all well and good, but watching a computer do something isn't very interesting. Bring on the modulars

Alternatives to the industry
I hope someone hands out flyers or something at these schools, with a link to archive.org's netlabels page, to show that if a kid is thinking of becoming a musician, ey needn't get sucked into the industry.
Come to think of it, school libraries stocking up on All You Need to Know About the Music Industry wouldn't be too bad either, as that shows exactly how the big companies get away with not paying artists what they're supposed to.

Re:Ok then - who here plays?
So, who else then? Any links to music?
Shameless plug: my music, my synthesizer encyclopedia. Feel free to download and copy them

Don't forget about free music

Re:Be a hypocrite. Hippos need crits.
The "Information wants to be free" argument invariably falls down when a person who'll quite glibly throw out that catchphrase suddenly falls quiet when asked to "free" their full address and credit card number.
That's not quite the same thing. I don't freely give out my debit card number. I do freely give out my music.
Although I will concede that ideally people should only take the free music rather than illegally copied music. That'd make the most people happy, I think.

Re:Lossy versus lossless compression
Using "I might want to copy it to a friend" as an argument for being able to buy the songs in a lossless format won't exactly help..
True. Many of the albums I own are because people copied single tracks from them to me (I think I bought three Tribe 8 albums on the basis of two of their songs once, which someone anonymously FTP'd to me). I don't expect companies to understand this though, what with them usually being geared to much shorter term goals.
Free music! (in both senses of the phrase)

Music that's free to copy
You can copy my music which is available in Ogg Vorbis format. How many other musicians here have released their music online? Surely more than have spoken so far.</SHAMELESS PLUG>

Re:I actually scored the 64kbps sample above..
Nope, there's a spiral at the end and the scary face is on the B-side. It definately sounds like a ~64kbps mp3 type noise, not a picture. After putting lots of pictures in songs (Like the C64 screen shot in this one), I can tell the difference.
