Re:well, I doubt it will be like that anymore
I'll still never move away from BitchX. I prefer looking like I'm working in a terminal session than chatting

Re:Good, clean, free.
On the other hand, the question is about windows. Here's the best freeware list I've found, taken off of the neowin.net forums. These are not guaranteed Clean, but most of them are. Also, you might want to check tinyapps.org, which specializes in SMALL apps (usually not enough space for ad/spyware).

BitchX
I luv BitchX irc client.Pretty good one based on ncurses.

My List.
For IRC, I use irssi. It's neat, small, fast, and does what I need it to. Also, I haven't had the need to change any of its stock options yet - I like it the way it is. Other candidates are BitchX (annoying autoaway etc.), ircII (too much configuring, maybe?), or CenterICQ (don't like the interface for IRC).
CenterICQ is my app of choice for IM. It's quirky sometimes, and once segfaulted, but other than that, I have had 0 problems with it. Also, it supports a variety of protocols.
For web-browsing, I use links. I've tried lynx and w3m, but links just "does it" I guess
:). It's got support for more stuff. Also, I find the -g option nice, something the other two don't have IIRC.I've tried Emacs, Pico, Nano, ed, etc. etc. etc., but so far, nothing has replaced my addiction to Vim. Maybe I'm a masochist, I don't know.
When I'm at home in console mode, I usually use Alt+Fx to switch between different apps, and use screen to keep irssi and centericq running. When over ssh, I use screen. Sometimes, I run out of VTs, so I use screen to group things inside the VTs. When in X, I just keep things in separate rxvt windows.
For entertainment, I have either NetHack, fortune -o, or bash.org (aww shit, slashdotted them, they're down enough as it is!) in links.

BitchX
When it comes to IRC gotta love BitchX.

pine =/= mtaI hate correcting a fellow Pine fan (actually I prefer Elm), but an MTA, a mail transfer agent, routes mail around using the simple mail transfer protocol. These daemons include sendmail, qmail, postfix, exim and others; whereas Pine is an email client which requires an mta to operate, either remotely or locally.
Parenthetically, the MTA you may be using when running Pine just might be a Microsoft mail server... so beware.
Links: Pine, Elm, Postfix, qmail. Might as well throw Lynx (web) and BitchX (irc) out there for you oldschool turbo C shell users. Home this gets me some karma
:)Glad there are some people out there not using GUIs for simple purposes like these. I hate the mouse.

I'm not afraid of you!
Every time I read stories like this, I feel an extreme sense of paranoia that the RIAA is going to come busting down my door and demand money for my songs. Then I realize...I turned off file sharing, which makes the penalties MUCH, MUCH less. The penalties for DISTRIBUTING music run about 750$ per file. The penalties for downloading music run about 99c/file (You just have to reimburse them for the cost of buying), under Title 17, Chapter 5, S504, b. If bad comes to worst, I'll sort through my selection of 400 some-odd files, count out how many are indie or not coverred by the RIAA, which will be around 300, and then pay them their $1,000 and be on my way, having beaten the music industry. Then I realize once again, they're not coming for me because I don't use FastTrack. [Note, IANAL]

Microsoft is a bug up the software industry's ass!
could we please stop this needless bashing of MS
MS should be bashed...it's like the diner that tries to sell rancid water and stale bread for $100(us). They use whatever means necessary to beat down their competition, so almost all of the other diners (or food producers) have gone out of business or are struggling. You can get better food from homeless shelters for free.
If you want to make a better comparison of MS vs open source then take 80-90% of _all_ open source programs and compare the number of flaws to MS' flaws.
Probably 80-90% of all open source programs are made by one or more of: script kiddies, teenagers playing around, hobbists, power users, people that bought "Learn to Program C in 21 Days" who now think they are "experts", and the people can't program so they start a project on SourceForge with a basic description and hope someone bites. None of these people should be expected to create a decent, bug-free program. For you to even think MS needs to be compared with them shows how backwards your position is.
Anyone and their cat can start an open source project in their garage. It doesn't mean anyone will use these programs, and it is absurd to compare those projects with a funded company that has paid professional programmers. However, from what I've seen, Microsoft would barely scratch by with even this test. If compared with the commonly used (and made by real programmers) Open Source projects, Microsoft wouldn't even have a chance.
Take a simple program like "BitchX," an IRC client.
I've used it before. Not to dis the guy who made it (BitchX isn't too bad an effort), but it does seem a bit script kiddie-like. In fact only a script kiddie would choose such a name.
;-) In fact read their page: "BitchX was started by Trench and HappyCrappy as a script for the ircII client."It has had countless security issues, and IRC has been around since '89 or so.
Why don't you compare BitchX with Microsoft's IRC client--assuming they still have one. All I remember about it was almost no features and stupid cartoons. BitchX has lots of features. Not that I'm saying they should be compared, BitchX is made by script kiddies after all--in fact they seem to want to be known as script kiddies--just look at their page!
We like to conveniently forget about sendmail and bind
What kind of dumbfuck would use sendmail or bind on their servers??? There are plenty of alternatives to those programs...
there is no equal or objective comparison between MS and "Linux" (or whatever you want to define as the yardstick of security.. which is typically "Linux" on
/.) in terms of security. There is no equal or objective comparison between the two because MS doesn't care about security or bugs! Whatever Linus would call a "Brown Paper Bag Bug", Bill calls a "feature".
...and I don't think most slashdot readers define Linux as a "yardstick of security". That would be something more like OpenBSD, who kick the hell out of Microsoft in terms of paranoia and therefore security. Numbers from bug reports aren't a good comparison between them either--the OpenBSD people seem to raise hell when they find the tiniest potential exploit, while Microsoft won't even acknowledge the most horrid of bugs/exploits and will only release a patch if they are embarrassed into it. -
Re:Why Linux PPC? (A: The GIMP)For people who a) like or need IRC and b) prefer free software to shareware / guiltware / payware, xchat is also quite nice to have, though Mozilla's IRC capabilities are getting quite nice. (private msg's are handled much better by xchat, though.)
Actually, if I recall correctly, BitchX is available for OSX. BitchX being free and all, you would probably agree that it is worth using.
Also, why are you so opposed to paying for software that people have obviously put a lot of effort into? If I really felt like editing images and being a digital artist in general, I would go out an shell out cash for Photoshop. Isn't it kind of hypocritical to diss commercial software on this site and then go off and offer people "subscriptions" to Slashdot, which you and the other editors have obviously worked (kind of) very hard on?

StereotypesThere is little open source software for windows, because authors of open source software do not want to support microsoft.
Thanks for stereotyping Open Source software developers. Unfortunately you are wrong. Many people who become involved in Open Source software do so because they want to share software with people and not because Micro$oft sux0rs. Simply because most of the posts on Slashdot typically mindlessly bash Microsoft and call it the Great Satan doesn't mean that people developing software that they want to benefit users of software will divorce themselves from the Windows platform.
What makes you think that Open Source development is restricted to users of a certain platform? Open Source Developer != Linux user even though a lot of them are.
Apache and Star Office are exceptions, because they want to become standards and that means being available for the most popular desktop platform.
Exceptions, huh? How about -
Re:No Win32 Open Source?
There is little open source software for windows, because authors of open source software do not want to support microsoft.
Sorry, this is false. I run Windows 2000, primarily because this is the sole machine that both my girlfriend and I use, and she is not comfortable with Linux desktop environments. OSS I have installed right now? Putty, GNU Emacs, bash(under Cygwin), BitchX, and an IDE based on mingw32 that utilizes ports of gcc and gdb.
I have run the Gimp on Windows, but that's actually kind of jarring; GTK look and feel just smacked down in the middle of everything else. I probably would have gotten used to it eventually, though.
