Heh, true. However, WWII can be described thusly for Denmark:

* OMG! Poland has been invaded by the Germans!
* OMG! We were invaded! We had, like 39 fatalities! (Note: We lost almost ten times that in camps. still neglible numbers affected)
* Wow, our own Swastika for the Danish Volunteer Nazi troops*? OMGTHX! (Scroll down to see the customized swastika on the Schalburg Cross; it reads "Fidelity, Our Honour"; banners here and here
(I'd like to point out that there estimates for the absolute maximum number of soldiers sent out through that corps is 1000, though)
* OMG! UK and US totally helped us get out of this again! W00t!

Now if this is such promising stuff here then why has it been collecting dust for the past three years? Perhaps our local plasma experts can wade through the technical data in the above mentioned paper and enlighten the rest of us.

What this implies is that astrophysics, as practiced, is no more science than, say, sociology. Whenever current astrophysical theories are falsified by observation, a fundamental law gets tossed instead. Lately we have "dark matter" (6x as much of it as the visible universe), "dark energy" (18x as much!), "inflation", and distant galaxies producing hundreds of times more light than similar modern ones. All are futile attempts to rescue the Big Bang from the oblivion it earns by being, finally, irreconcilable with observation. (E.g. light-element ratios; gravitational lensing measurements of galactic mass; fractal, filamentary arrangement of galactic superclusters; preferred direction of cosmic microwave background anisotropy; shall I go on?)

For all the claims of evidence for the role of neutron stars and black holes in galactic-scale events, it all amounts to negative evidence: those are the only way to concentrate enough energy when the only forces you are willing or equipped to work with are gravitation, fusion, and shock waves. Even so, multimillion-degree "hot gases" in free space and 10^14 eV cosmic rays remain beyond their capacity. Current flow in interstellar plasmas easily propagates and concentrates such energies, without reliance on untestable physical laws and ghosts. However, such work can, as a rule, only be published in Plasma Science journals not read (and perhaps not readable) by astrophysicists.

I've worked in the IT department of a University Library for about three years now, so I've done some work on this myself. The problem with switching to Linux or even Mac is that 99% of your patrons coming in will be used to the windows world, and most of them will have no idea on how to use anything else. If you switched the stations to Linux, your librarians will be spending a significant part of their time just helping users to do basic computing tasks. I'm not saying that Linux is so complicated that people can't figure it out, but the majority of computer users get frustrated by change.

We use all Windows 2000 machines here and lock down the profiles through group policy. Add a good virus scanner (Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2004) and make sure automatic updates are set to download and install automatically, and you will have almost no problems. We also use a program called public browser (http://teamsoftware.bizland.com/) and disguise it as Internet Explorer and set it as the default browser to lock down the browser end of things. Public Browser also works well for our kiosk stations that just show our catalog.

If a machine does get hit (none of our new ones have) it doesn't take much to re-immage it. If we had the funds, I would deffinitely like to move to XP, mostly for the benifits included in SP2, but 2000 does fine for us.

The other thing we will be doing in the future is putting all our public machines behind a firewall/router for increased security.

I am a Linux Certified network consultant. I as the security manager of a new network, had to install OpenSwan to provide secure network services to my clients. The problems were many.

Network overhead increased by 40%
Router MTBF increased by 50%
Adminstration costs increased by 70%

We eventually dropped Openswan and fired the linux zealot who recommended it to us. We chose the MTSEC security from Bizland Consultants inc instead, and it saved us over 700%! So, don't choose swan without trying MTSEC first!

BZZZZZT - wrong
One could not just rename a file and share it on Napster. A valid mp3 header had to be on the file or it would not be recognized when the program scaned your shared folder. One had to use Wrapster to stick a header on the file.

The idea is just silly. Makes me want to go patent the Redbook standard and sue the RIAA.

Funny you should mention that ... the CD Specification is stuffed full of patents (mainly from Philips & Sony) which are due to expire in a year or so. I doubt you'll notice the couple of cent drop in price of a CD due to not having to pay the patent holders when they do expire though :-)

The only recent time Philips has got upset with the RIAA was when they weren't sticking to the Redbook standard!

I use Bizland.com mail forwarding. It works the same way as the first poster's idea, but with a free subdomain. If I remember correctly, with Sneakemail you have to log onto their site every time an address gets spammed and delete/change the account. This way, all you have to do is add it to your filters, which seems to be more convenient to me.

Actually, it makes sense for me. Thanks to a suggestion from someone here on Slashdot, I got a free subdomain from Bizland.com (spamcheck.bizland.com). As part of it, any email sent to any address at my subdomain (*@spamcheck.bizland.com), gets forwarded to my real email address. So whenever a website asks for my email, I put it as sitename@spamcheck.bizland.com. If I start getting spam sent to sitename@spamcheck.bizland.com, I know exactly where they got it, and I can easily filter out all spam with that address in the 'To:' field.

It's a really novel idea, and I wish I knew about it sooner (my main email already gets other unfilterable spam).

There's another approach to this, if you don't have your own domain: get one from bizland.com, which offers free email and webspace. You get a domain in the form foo.bizland.com, and all mail to username@foo.bizland.com (for any username at all) is redirected to you. So I typically set up my email address as domain.com@foo.bizland.com and am able to track just what came from where.

The bizland account redirects to an iname.com account, so if the spam ever starts mounting I can kill it fairly easily.

(Note that 'foo' is NOT my Bizland name!)

So far I haven't received anything I shouldn't have. Which is nice to know.
