Re:Wow, lots of anger so far...
Bomis has been all but shut down. According to news reports, it used to include adult photos at babes.bomis.com, but this section has been deleted.
Googling around reveals a screenshot of the site as it used to be. -
List of JW's edits to his page
- September 9, 2004: Writes the shortest autobiography ever, "Jimmy Wales is a person.". Previous version was a redirect to User:Jimbo Wales.
- September 18, 2004: marks a reference as outdated.
- September 18, 2004: settles a "revert war" about his own birthday.
- August 13, 2005: removes comment about him being majority shareholder of Bomis portal.
- September 4, 2005: rephrases "softcore pornography" with "adult content".
- September 4, 2005: revert to previous.
- October 20, 2005: changes "[[erotica]] section" with "[[blog]] based on [[Slashcode]]", shortens section on Wikipedia voting procedures and states he dislikes the term benevolent dictator.
- October 28, 2005: removes "[[pornography]] section with a" (followed by "[[blog]] based on [[Slashcode]]"), adds Sanger to list of Wikipedia founders, cuts section on Wikipedia voting that had been reverted.
- October 29, 2005: reinstates Sanger; changes location of Wikimedia foundation from Tampa to St. Petersburg (FL, not RU).
- November 9, 2005: again, reinstates Sanger into credits for Wikipedia.
- November 9, 2005: rephrases "continues to call" into "now calls".
- December 2, 2005: precises he is co-founder of Wikipedia, that "Jeremy Rosenfeld initially came up with the idea to make the encylopedia wiki-based" whereas "Sanger coined the name 'wikipedia'".
Some are multiple edits. If you read the list, beware the impersonator and vandal Jimmy D Wales (his version).
Seems to me mostly minor edits, surely not a vanity page. In the Talk page, Jimbo explains some (like his dislike of expressions like "pornography", or the fact he does not retain control over other editors).

Bomis
I don't know that Bomis can be called porn-related any more than the Internet can be called porn-related. Further, Bomis is no more a search engine for porn than ODP is a search engine for porn.

What is Bomis.Com?
Bomis.Com is an Internet ring index and portal site. We index web pages into Bomis Rings. We also offer features such as free email, weather, news, and email discussion lists. -
Wow, lots of anger so far...All modded +5 of course...
And not much analysis of facts on the ground.
Let's Begin:
Claim 1 from Wired:
Public edit logs reveal that Wales has changed his own Wikipedia bio 18 times, deleting phrases describing former Wikipedia employee Larry Sanger as a co-founder of the site.
If Larry Sanger was a co-founder, (I don't know and don't have time to check) deleting that fact is at the very least petty and vindictive. It does not really matter if it is or is not against some "code" or "guideline". Giving credit where credit is due is the right thing to do. Deleting credit over and over again... well, you will each come to your own conclusion.
Claim 2 from Wired:
Cadenhead said other Wikipedia editors described Bomis Babes as "soft-core pornography," but Wales changed it to "adult content section" on Sept. 4, and later twice removed references to pornography, instead describing it as "Bomis Babes blog based on Slashcode."
Going to Bomis Babes here: http://www.bomis.com/tree/babe gives me two sponsored links at the top of the page, cut and pasted one of them below:
Searching for Porn?
Sponsored Link
Find the Best Subscription Sites Search XXX Videos, Pics & More
FantasyFinder.com/CreditCardRequire
So at the very least the site has no problem with advertising for porn. Trying to find some pics, I find links to ring sites, cut and pasted below:
Hot Asian Sucking Whores
Sponsored Link
Cute Japanese School Girls Sex $14.95/Mo
Huge. No Limits. Ad Free!
www.guba.net
Still no pics. Maybe the site is just a search engine for porn, with no pics? Beats me, and with the lack of immediate pics I don't care, but "porn related" seems a fair claim.

Re:NOTE: not a violation of "policy"
although i'm doing my best to find some naughty bits.
It's not that difficult...
The above mentioned link is one click away from the main page. -
Why I didn't watch
Starts with a bad starting soundtrack to the show. Tried to be different there. Next was the show was way too dark looking, like the sets. There is also too much similarity now to other CGI shows. Maybe it's time to move away from CGI and go back to 'models' which are excellent in detail and realism.
Another small point is that most Star Trek fans could always expect to see beautiful women on the show. But not anymore. They took the hottest chick and turned her into an adrogenous man-woman. If they would have had any sexiness to Jolene Blaylock that would have converted to a couple of 'shares on the nielson ratings'. I would have stopped channel flipping if they costumed her anywhere as hot as her mzxim or stuff layouts.
Jolene Blaylock dressed as a real hot vulcan would dress with disdain for clothing -
re: clusterfuckorgy
nobody wants to see a crowd of sweaty homosexuals in spandex tights and padding prancing about trying to hump each other. That's disgusting. Here, have a pr0n
-
Re:If I could mod...
Yes, Jimbo ran a search portal that had pr0n on it. It's defunct.
Not.

I'll say it again. The guy (Wales) who runs Wikipedia is a common pornographer. -
Re:Don't trust his site?...
Here's one of his sites [babes.bomis.com]. You decide whether or not to call it "pornography".
That's a little disingenuous.
I think you've read more into it than I intended. I simply provided the link so that you could decide for yourself whether or not to call Bomis pornography. Considering that the "Bomis Premium Pic of the Day" is a topless woman pushing her boobs together, I'd say yes, it is (not that there's anything wrong with that).
They provide the infrastructure for similar-themed sites to find each other and provide links that help with mutual traffic generation.
This was more than just links. Take a look at http://premium.bomis.com/. " This is your chance to see top-notch models bare it all for the incredible price of only $2.95! Yes, Bomis Premium offers a 3 day trial for only $2.95. Don't miss out on any of the great things Bomis Premium has to offer. We are adding more new galleries every day, including pictures that you won't be able to find anywhere else." Are you saying those galleries aren't being run by Bomis?
One of the many subject categories is fan sites for nude models (and, I'm sure, the "fan" sites are largely dominated by pay porn operators).
So premium.bomis.com is a fan site? It doesn't seem that way, not at all.
I could give you a link in google or yahoo that would do the same thing. Is Yahoo a pornographer?
I dunno, Yahoo isn't directly engaged in selling pornography. Bomis, it appears, is.

Re:Don't trust his site?...
sollog claims that wales is a pornographer.
Here's one of his sites. You decide whether or not to call it "pornography".

Jimbo Wales...
... is most definitely a purveyor of pornography. And I, for one, thank him. I recommend the bomis rings, in particular.

The Wikipedia CabalI think a very serious question for these efforts is who owns it and who controls it.
For example, Slashdot is owned by OSDN, has advertising, does not have a democratic article submission process but does have a very democratic moderation policy.
Kuro5hin has a more democratic article submission policy than Slashdot, since unlike Slashdot, the users decide what is news. Well, different strokes for different folks, but that is how things are set up
Wikipedia does not currently have advertising, is controlled by Jimmy Wales (who finances Wikipedia with his porn sites), who is an Ayn Rand fanatic. He chose who the first admins would be which include a rabid right-wing Moonie whose handle is Ed Poor. This group is self-selecting and all articles on politics, history, biographies of certain figures and so forth is suffuse with their American, white, white collar perspective of things. I am a white white-collar American, but they seem alien even to me - the US government and big business is always right, anyone Reagan or Bush wouldn't like is wrong (from the Russians to the Sandinistas to the Cubans to the Iraqis to the Palestinians and so on and so forth). It is not an "open" collaboration because these hand-picked admins by Jimmy Wales, the porn magnate randroid, have control of the site and act in this manner.
It does not look that unusual to an American perhaps because it is similar to the corporate media. But of course, people who work for the corporate media are paid for their effort, Wikipedia volunteers aren't. Yet the same ideological hegemony remains. Wales gets the same edifice other media millionaires like himself gets build, with the same ideological hegenomy, but he gets people to build it for him for free.
These are things to be aware of - on Slashdot as well as Wikipedia. I mean, Slashdot is NOT a totally open forum for hackers of all stripes. On the other hand, Usenet is often too all over the place, and too unconstrained (spam more than flames nowadays). True people's encyclopedia's, true forums for IT people are yet to be built. The chaos of Usenet would make many an anarchist cringe - structures are being built, and must be built that allow the freedom of Usenet publishing, plus the personal freedom of choosing whether to go in for collective moderation or not (like Slashdot - we can ignore -1 flames if we like. There seems to be a lot of Wales fans here so I suppose I risk being sent to -1). It must be remembered that Slashdot and Wikipedia are not it, and these forms are being built, and need help being built.

Re:Follow the money folks
Good work, I was just about to post the same thing my self. An interesting search is this one site:nightsurf.com It looks like the dealcode paramater is the affiliate, for lack of a better term, who nightsurf is paying. Bomis is some kind of bogus search engine, and any key word that is listed on the google search in Bomis gives you a very similar page to the one search.msn.com gives you for the XFree86 result.
Something very fishy is going on as it looks like there has to be some sort of agreement for nightsurf to like a specific query. Changing the dealcode to msn on one of the Bomis search strings redirects you to the dealcode=other site and porn is only for grownups warning. -
Best use of Slashcode ever?

Re:But quickly fixed...
Maybe you should tell these people

The *real* question
The real question is 'is compulsory taxation moral'? I, and many others, argue that it isn't.

Re:image.google.com Babes
Help! I keep searching for Babes on image.google.com - but Babe Ruth keeps showing up. Yech!
The best babe search engine in the world is bomis.com, and they even have their own slash-based babe news site, babes.bomis.com.
-
Re:a business plan?
It is a good idea. It has been done.
Bomis Babes uses Slash code to get their dirty old man groove on

Re:Stuff I Dig/Dug.
FINALLY!
I was beginning to despair of seeing any mention of the ABSOLUTE BEST of all anime' -- the Patlabor duet of films.
In order, my favorite anime' would be:
- Patlabor-1 : The Babylon Project [10/10] : The best anime film ever. Hyper-realistic believable near-future high-tech mystery-thriller.
- Patlabor-2 [10/10] : One femto-meter from being the best anime film ever. Hyper-realistic believable near-future high-tech mystery-thriller.
- Armitage III: The Polymatrix [9/10] : Explores transhumanist evolution on a terraformed future Mars.
- Gho st in the Shell [8/10] : Considered the "definitive" exploration of what defines one's humanity.
- Battle Angel : Gunnm [7/10] : Dystopian cyberpunk drama.
- Appleseed [7/10] : Strange dystopian future with hopeful ending.
- Dragonball Z [6/10] : Fun filled kung-foo fighting!

Get your Stevie Case pictures here!!!The Stevie Case Web Ring
The last link in the ring contains all the pictures from Playboy. Frankly, her breasts look so fake that I think they're ugly. Not only that, but she looks a lot like Madonna in those pics.

Re:Big claims .. I'd be worried for my head
100Mbs isn't really a good data transfer rate. Assuming I'm reading it right (100 megabits per second.. I think megabytes per second would be MBps). Current EIDE/UDMA drives get about 11 MBps. And this is only 10MBps? (Note: hdparm -t
/dev/hda3 tells me my drive is currently doing 11.35 MBps.) If it is 100MBps, well... then.. bathe it and bring it before me.
As a slight side note, I gotta say I think all the talk of this being vaporware is kinda silly. Firstly, so what if it is? You'll go on living in your day to day 6.3GB world and be as happy as the proverbial clam. Secondly, why would they do that? Do they have any competitors to crush by doing it? Do they really stand to gain anything with it? No. Investors would want to see a prototype in action before they'd give it any money, and all the big tech companies have bigtime badass doctors of engineering to go over the reports they've been given and see if it's feasible.
