I'm somewhat immune
I've tried lots of different brainwave stuff, and don't get much of an effect.
But I bought a few of Robert Monroe's Hemisync Gateway Experience discs for my girlfriend, and they work very well for her. Now she's having lucid dreams or OBEs most nights.
They'd work for me too, if only I could relax my physical body. I'm getting close to figuring out how to balance my poor disheveled autonomic nervous system - I expect I'll be able to influence my brainwaves like a normal human...
p.s. Monroe's CDs are also available via Amazon.com's mp3 store, for $2/cd. At prices like those, why not give the first CD a try? Probably ought to get a used copy of Monroe's book, Far Journeys, for a little background.

resources for learning whole-brained thinking
. I just started with a therapist and I am trying to find a good relaxation/mediation CD. Do you know of any good CD's for meditaiton/relaxation?
Silva Method's 'Long Relaxation Exercise' or the Silva Ultramind 'Centering Exercise' both teach the same method of relaxation: relax the body, relax the mind, and how to enter a state of inner-focused awareness. It's a training program, and if you train properly (that is, at least once a day at the start), after a month you won't need to listen to the tract at all.
Get sessions #1 and #2 (or the whole 8-cd package, for sure) or the Silva Method 'Choose Success' course, or find a download of the Centering Exercise (it's relatively easy to find).
Jose Silva cared more about 'how' to teach enhanced mental functioning than the 'whys' of why his method worked. If you have to know why something works, get a copy of Anna Wise's The High Performance Mind.
Robert Monroe's hemi-sync system (for hemispherical-synchronization - basically getting the two halves of the brain working together in sync) also has some good programs, though that might not be exactly what you're looking for.
The BrainWave Generator used to be available as a free download, but I haven't looked at that site in a couple years...
Hope this helps. Be sure to follow up on my other reply too. :) -
Re:Self hypnosis software?
I would recommend taking a look at http://www.bwgen.com/

Re:Vertigo?
No dude, it was that digital LSD you took while using that Brainwave Generator thingamabob.

Re:Computerized dream-inducers?
You may find the Mind machine FAQ helpful. There are a lot of machines out there, some of which which cost considerably less than the novadreamer ($500 with bundled materials) and while they may not be as compact many of them are probably a lot more adjustable. I have not had the opportunity to try a mind machine as a sleep inducer but I did try one at a spa and can confirm that they do mess with your head and stimulate interesting mental imagery. Brain Wave Software is also availble for windoze (emulator compatible) with a 30 day trial. Note that flashing a computer screen is not as good as LED glasses which can flash over a wider range of frequencies without beating with the screen refresh frequency or being effected by phosphor decay and also the LED glasses work with your eyes closed.

Re:Dare I ask
The brown note is the note that causes bowels to release.
The brown noise is like pink and white noise; more information here: http://www.techlar.com/fractals/websys.exe/music/
b rown.htmlThe brown note (that causes bowels to release); normally known as the Sphincter Resonance - In the 1960s, apparently, somebody discovered the resonating frequency of the sphincter. They created a device called an "Anal Sphincter Resonator" - an organ-like device. It was used in a suspense thriller play - they intended it to "shake up" the audience when danger was being acted out - apparently it caused the entire audience to soil themselves. It approximately at 5 or 12 hz (I'm unsure which!), hearing the sound isn't important; its a resonance frequency.
I can't find much information from google on it, but you can generate the frequency using a Win32 app called BwGen (Brainwave Generator); the preset is at http://www.bwgen.com/presets/desc475.htm

Program your brain
I specially like the Brainwave Generator. Its not a joke. It works. Its the best way to get relaxed if you are very stressed. Or to get a great sleep experience. The website explains how the brainwave software works. It works anybody else has tried it?

Re:Binaural recordings anyone?
Actually, Binatural stuff is pretty interesting, kinda unrelated to this, but interesting none-the-less is Brainwave Generator at www.bwgen.com.
Scientifically, I'm still skeptical, but its interesting and in my experience makes some interesting effects!

Re: Yes, old.
Research something called Binaural Beats.
One of the best programs out there for it is called Brainwave Generator. It's unfortunately for Windows but runs fine with WineX and is quite impressive. -
Re:AutoZen
The Brainwave Generator is the Windows equivalent of the same. While not freeware, the shareware version is nearly fully-functional (you can't load someone else's presets, until you register). I've used it a bit, and it does work pretty well..

schumann resonances
this reminds me of schumann resonances.. you can read about them at: http://www.innerx.net/personal/tsmith/Schumann.ht
m l
i was telling a buddy about these and he recommended i check out http://www.bwgen.com/ .. its a sound generator that can create a wide variety of frequencies (including shumann resonances) .. i have found several presets all over the place and now i use it to relax, to fall asleep, to study for that big test.. many applications :]

Brainwave Generator
There's a much more robust Windows Brainwave generator available at http://www.bwgen.com/. There's a free download available if you want to try it.

Binaural beat generator
BrainWave Generator is pretty cool for playing with binaural beats, or at least making weird sounds come out of your computer. And some of the presets do seem to put me in an interesting state of mind.

New Age solutions
There are a few things you could try:
Meditate. A half hour of meditation could reduce the need for sleep by several hours.
Or, more simply, rest throughout the day. Take a few 5 to 15 minute breaks were you do nothing but relax and breathe.
Brainwave syncronization devices also claim to reduce the need for sleep. You can spend hundreds of dollars on one, or you can get the free software BWGen. All you need are headphones. -
Brainwave Programs
Here are two that I've found:
Brainwave Generator - Handy windows program with builtin presets to do all the things you mentioned. This is probably the program you used.
Cool Edit Pro - This software has a Brain Synchronizer built in to allow you to create your own subliminal messages and brain synchronizer sounds. -
Re:A few things
A program that generates such sounds is Brain Wave Generator. It is Windows shareware, but the FAQ on the website says it runs on Wine.
On another note, has anyone tried SuperMemo? This is a software flashcard program. I like the concept behind it, and even bought the software. But the user interface is so horrible that I can't stand to use it. Are there any better alternatives? -

Get your free sound generator here.
and yes, it really does work.

Its just FFR
I think many
/. posters either didn't read the article or didn't quite grasp it. This has nothing to do with reading minds, its just a clever use of the frequency following response. If you watch a 10-hz light or listen to 10-hz binaural beats your mind's electrical activity tends to match the signal.
With practice you can get better and faster syncronization, as seen since the 60's with Light/Sound machines or Cranial Electro Stimunators and an EEG. Though these devices are used to train people to get into relaxing or stimulating mind states its still the same technology. Not even half as interesting as that IBM quantum interface posted last week.
If anyone wants to play with binaural beats, this is a nice shareware generator.
