so many bad answers..
Akamai is a premium priced streaming provider, there are many others, most of whom will do what you need at a much lower cost. We are currently streaming live streams (live television channels) with akamai, vitalstream, limelight, and others. We are pulling the seed streams from the middle east and south asia and broadcasting to thousands of users over a very wide geographic area. We have load tested to the 10s of thousands of users and none of the CDNS have even broken a sweat. I know of several sites that are streaming 24/7 channels that have literally hundreds of thousands of simultaenous viewers and viewerships ranking in the millions per month. (unique).
Do yourself a favor, call vitalstream or limelight they have starter streaming packs which you probably cannot even begin to use up and they run in the hundreds of dollars a month if I remember right.
To everyone that said xvid or any other format. xvid is a file format. he wants LIVE streams.
to everyone that said streaming is dead.. get a grip, iptv is the next television revolution..

These aren't bragging numbersI see a few posts bragging about these numbers. Stop now before you embarass yourself.
For example, the biggest VOIP company in Japan, Softbank has about 4.4 million VoIP customers. Yes, that's just one of the VOIP companies in Japan. (Source: cabledatacomnews.com)
I'm not here to brag about Japan. I'm sure S. Korea and China have impressive, if not larger numbers of VOIP users.

Been there, done that.
Videotron (Quebec's cable provider, owns the whole 24.*.*.* IP range with another cable provider) is supposed to LAUNCH a similar VoIP service in the early 2005, article here.
We'll see how it works, and if it does well against Bell's telephone monopoly. I hate Bell, ill be happy to switch away from them. -
Re:confused: do ya want speed or reliable speed?
Same for me, I've been getting a very reliable 3000/300 connection since their upgrade and giganews runs anywhere from 340 kb/s to 400 kb/s. It looks like half the people testing on dslreports are getting that speed or better. Also, they're planning on 50 Mbit/s within two or three years.

Re:Digital TV?
and I'll be damned if I'm going to buy (or rent, if the cable company gets its way) a digital converter box to watch tv.
The FCC has mandated that Cable Co's allow people to buy digital set top boxes (and cablemodems too), and also has set a date for the end of leasing equipment, see FCC Mandates Retail Sale Of Cable Set-Tops And Modems. I personally think you should be able to lease or own, not one or the other. -

Re:22 Million Customers...You might want to check your definitions.
If you count cable subscribers then:
- Comcast/AT&T Broadband would have 22 million customers
- Time Warner Cable has 12.7 million customers
If you count Internet access then:
- Comcast/AT&T BroadBand would have roughly 2 million subscribers
- America Online would have 30 million subscribers
