Re:BS
We are looking at the dents on the inside surface of our universe made by something that bumped into it from outside, way in the past.
And our laws of physics hold only inside our universe, and only after a certain time since the Big Bang. Before that time, anything could have happened. This is one hypothesis we can check.
My question is how they're supposed to tell what caused a particular distortion in the background radiation. A quick look at the COBE plot shows it to be a swiss cheese. So how do you differentiate between multiverses and sharp sticks poking into it?

Re:Question
Sentences that use every letter in the alphabet exactly once are called pangrams. Several examples exist. The "Veldt jynx.." one may be the oldest - at least it's the only one i recall seeing in the Guiness Book of Records.

They've already proved it isn't a game: Gödel
The formalists thought it was a "game" -- which is to say a formal system interesting mainly because of the relations between various components in the system.
Unfortunately, that was only fun for a little while until Gödel's Incompleteness Proof successfully proved that not all truths of arithmetic could be proved using the rules of arithmetic. The result generalizes.
So the real question here is "Are all sports games?" If so, and it seems quite reasonable, then quite objectively the answer to "Is mathematics a sport?" is no. (Ok, so only if all games are formal systems...)

Re: Mr Jock, TV Quiz Ph.D., bags few lynx. How about:
Veldt jynx grimps waqf zho buck.
Like yours, it uses each letter exactly once. Unlike yours, every word is a valid (if archaic) full English word, and it makes grammatical sense; but unlike mine, yours was understandable :)(I think it means something about an unlucky grassland annoying a certain type of cattle belonging to a mosque. There're more here.)

UnderclockingI prefer underclocking. The allowable temperature range goes up and the MTBF gets better. Many industrial PCs are underclocked about 20% for exactly those reasons. This will assume more importance this summer when California will have to go without air conditioning to conserve power.
Hobbyist underclocking is starting to take off. The MP3mobile, a home-built MP3 player for autos, involved a Pentium 166 underclocked to 125MHz. Automotive hardware is often underclocked; the thermal and power environment of the auto is fierce.
As for the gamers, they're probably better off getting a graphics card upgrade. The current generation of graphics boards are essentially overclocked already; current NVidia products have heat sinks on the RAM.

In-Car MP3 playerCheck out this site MP3Mobile . This guy built a in-dash MP3 player and has the steps and material he used. And I believe he is working on making a commercial version of it available. You should be some good ideas from this site on how to build the player.

Re:Linux -- The OS of the Millenium"I wouldn't be surprised if we see such applications as MP3 players for cars which run on Linux"
I wouldn't be suprised either. In fact, its already been done!

Empeg Price and old news
The Empeg is relatively expensive, but developing a custom mainboard always is; you sure you're up to the task? If you've read some more of the details on the mp3mobile you'll know that some source was released; and copyright issues played a part in the descision not to release more. Finally, I'd better declare an interest; Hugo is my younger brother!
PS No one at Slashdot has stock in Empeg :-) -
Where's the CD-R one?Erm, if you could design, photoplot, produce and populate an empeg board (8-layer PCB, plus a 2-layer one for the frontboard) and the metalwork (we'll exclude the HDD) for $1k, you'd be doing amazingly well. You might have problems sourcing some of the chips though, some are in-car only products and aren't sold via distribution.
You're also overlooking the huge amount of effort that has gone into (and will continue to go into) the software. The empeg is totally software upgradeable: we only run at about 35% load playing MP3s, we've got loads of headroom for whatever comes along next. This isn't a disposable like a Rio, this product is built like a tank and is looking towards the future.
An existing SBC unit could be done - and if you want to, there are descriptions, pictures and source of my earlier project, the mp3mobile, here.
I've said before: there's no room for a CDrom (without losing the display) and a CDrom doesn't give the integrated music database concept room to move. You just get a big CD with *some* of your music on it. Yes, 12x as much as a normal CD, but it's still only *some* of your music. You have to swap disks. The empeg is all about having it ALL and having it NOW.
