Re:There is an old anecdote
I should have said NATO round, but it's still apparently a legend, as you say. Thanks!
Here's more discussion for those interested. And another. There are some differences between the rounds, and it can cause problems, but it's not as significant as I believed, and it's not about the diameter per se. Or so it appears!

Re:Flawed "Think of the Children" as usual
Cocking the hammer on most revolvers locks the cylinder in place, in order to ensure the impending explosion doesn't cause the slug to zip into the corner of the barrel. Revolvers with problems relating to lockup (adequately locking the cylinder in place) or timing (locking the cylinder in the right place) are unsafe, and prone to "catastrophic failure". If the slug simply stops, or encounters too much resistance, the pressure increases beyond safe levels. Under pressure, gunpowder burns faster. If powder burns faster, pressure rises. If a revolver doesn't lock up reliably, this can lead a well characterized, somewhat-controlled deflagration to turn into a completely unpredictable detonation that will remove fingers and embed parts of the weapon in the face of its user.
Cocked revolvers tend to have very light triggers, and the process of unlocking a gun and removing the trigger lock can set it off. Revolvers in particular aren't just dangerous in the direction the bullet flies. The gap between the cylinder and the barrel is the site of a second, small explosion; even without a projectile coming out, the white-hot gas moving at above the speed of sound will take your thumb clean off. No, strike that - it'll take it off messily. Warning - this link includes an image of the aftermath of a traumatic amputation. This one includes a picture of how to hold a revolver so as to not be injured like that. This one (probably a long exposure) better captures the peak intensity of this explosion. And this gun in question is only of moderate power - that appears to be either a .38 or .357, both around the middle of the pack. Even those are sometimes known to burn through the top strap of the revolver, eventually weakening the frame there enough that continuing to use the weapon risks catastrophic failure.
Making that revolver safe might not require an underwear change - it might require a trip to the emergency room and being fitted for a prosthetic. If your palm is caught by it, you may still have a hand afterwords - but it could sever the nerves and tendons allowing you to feel or move your fingers. Your suggestion of putting your thumb between hammer and frame is a good one, actually, but a hammer strike could injure your thumb, too - there could be permanent damage, ranging from scarring to loss of the thumbnail to nerve damage (though there's not much finger downstream, so you'd be pretty functional after you healed). Nail bed injuries are slow to heal; last time I messed one up (gym accident) took about two years before I could expect to do anything more strenuous than walk without sudden spikes of pain now and then. I'd strongly recommend a pencil eraser instead of a thumb.
You asked a good question, honestly and politely - I wish more people would do that when they didn't know the answer. -
Re: That's nice
Except nobody MAKES a 7-round magazine, and certainly won't for every variety of firearm out there. It **MIGHT** be worthwhile tooling up for a 7-round mag for a 1911-series pistol,
-
Re: Jack Thompson is already on the case
Many handguns accept high-capacity magazines. A Glock 26 comes standard with a 10-round magazine and the Glock 17 with a 17-round magazine. Both will accept a 33-round, high-capacity clip.
[Note: Anyone who puts a 33-round clip in a "baby" Glock 26 needs help understanding the purpose of a sub-compact pistol.]

Re:*confused
according to wikipedia he used a bushmaster xm-15, which is basically a semi-automatic m-16 with a 16 inch barrel.

Cheap. Easy. Quiet. If everyone did this there would not be a toad left. If the govt. put a $0.25 bounty a toad, the toads would be on the endangered species list in a month.
For really quiet:

For really loud, with spray:

Re:Not wise...Well, the article is down so I am not sure what it actually looks like. But it seems to me there is absolutely no reason to make this device look like a dangerous weapon.
The really moronic thing is that the actual "business end" of this thing is contained within that white piece of PVC pipe at the front. The part that looks like a rifle (appears to be a folding stock for Mini-14) is literally bolted on behind it. These guys are clearly working the photo-op angle on this thing. Probably fishing for grants or contracts or whatever it is they think they can do for money by making it look sinister. If they were into pure functionality, a tripod mount like a telescope (with a small spotting scope on the side) would have been a better choice. Plus, you could probably sit on the roof of a building with a telescope all day wothout getting shot at even once.

Wait a minute, you mean I can buy a switch blade?
Well I didn't know that. I should get a switch blade and not assemble it.
I should also order an AK-47 kit and not order the missing receiver through some place else or have some manufacture a custom one for me cheaply. (yes you too can have an fully automatic illegal assult weapon for under $200, as long as you don't assemble it).
Funny how the same place also carries high capacity magazines, ammo and drums for that particular fire arm. but you're not suppose to have any of this stuff. (Sorry won't ship the mags to california, you'll have to buy them at a local gun show for half the price). -
Light Intensification ActivatedIt depends on the type of NVGs the dorks in the black vests are wearing. I'd trust that they're wearing simple military-surplus Generation 1 light intensifiers. They can be had for $300-$500 in military surplus or hunting supplies catalogs. (Amazon has some of these Soviet-alike NVGs for $650, which is pretty steep. I bought mine for $450 from CheaperThanDirt (technically, it's a rifle scope, but similar enough, Besides, operating a rifle at night with those cheapy Soviet NVGs is nearly impossible, this one also works great as a helmet-mounted monocular. Yes, I wear my helmet when I'm playing in the desert).
Each of these Gen 1 light amplifiers don't really do that great of a job, all things considered. The resolution is far too low to be terribly useful (the scope has a reticle, so that makes targeting the general area of your target a bit easier, but actually hitting anything with any degree of accuracy is pretty much impossible) and the contrast can be irritating as hell. Either everything in the viewfinder is pitch black or bright white. This makes driving in a no-light situation very difficult, even at low speeds. And given the fact that my dumb Ford Bronco just loves to tell me that I should CHECK REAR ANTI-LOCK every time I turn the key, I'm treated to an intense white blob out of the corner of my eye. Love them dashboard lights.
Both the scope and the goggles are 'passive light amplification' which means they can amplify the starlight, but if you're in a pitch-black situation (overcast, underground) both have an infrared emitting diode atop the objective lens, which paints the area in front of you with light out of the visible spectrum. If you're not actually hunting someone with their own NVGs, turning on the IRED works great.
Now, as for the theater, why don't they just use a little Sony Handicam with NightShot? When I... appended one to my fender (so as to make an inexpensive Forward-Looking Infrared setup for my vehicle), I got better images on my little monochrome field monitor than I ever got from the stupid goggles. The Handicam picked up the IREDs from my other friends and their NVGs, even outside of NightShot mode.
But I ramble on. As for your question, I don't think it could do any permanent damage to the idiot ushers using them to totally narc out those evil Copyright Violators, lamentably. No, turning the lights on won't permanently blind NVG users (despite what the film 'Clear and Present Danger' had to say about the issue), just leave a nasty monitor burn-in against your retinas! Just like looking at the sun for a second or catching the glimpse of an arc from your welder. Unless of course, you're stupid and ignore that old HEY BRIGHT LIGHT I SHOULD PROBABLY CLOSE MY EYES BECAUSE THIS IS BRIGHT, WHOA! reflex that most mammals have when confronted with an intense light being beamed right into their cute little peepers.
