Here is what you can do..
Just make a form with a spot for all relevant credit card info (i.e. name, number, exp. date) and write it into a text file. Then once a week you send them to me. I take them to this guy I know, bob "chainsaw" griffin, and he gives me $100 for every number that works! I give you 60% and everyone is happy...

Re:Never Worked
No.. but I worked at a papermill with highly dangerous compounds and heavy machinery. And I smoked dope WITH my co-workers on lunch breaks... I also worked paving driveways... dope smokers, every one of us. Now I write software... nothing will kill you here (unless you try really, really hard) and we all smoke dope. I've never been responsible for or anyway involved in any kind of accident at any place of employment I've ever had... masonry, carpentry, landscaping, paving, papermilling, programming, selling retail, tutoring, flipping burgers, and shipping/recieving.

Re:I just wouldnt work for them.....
Anything that requires clearance is not worth it, in my opinion. My friend's dad has a job that requires him to change security levels once every few years and the company stakes out his house and taps his phone for like a month.... that's just fscking rediculous.

Re:I just wouldnt work for them.....
Of course I have a price... I'd let someone write a book about my bathroom habits if the price was right... I would submit to background checks if the job was worth millions of dollars a year.. couldnt really pass it up... but for eighty thousand a year.. they can take the background checks 'n' shuv 'em.

Re:A computer case?
I'm not sure if static bags provide RF sheilding to the necessary degree, however, I am sure something similar exists. I know for a fact it's going to be much more difficult to find a substance that will hold up to the ventillation ass... but with enough NASA research we shouldnt be too far from an adequate ventillation ass solution.

A computer case?
I think it would be pretty sweet to have a computer case made of legos! You could add ventelation ass needed and add new hardware at will... My computer would have a drink holder (not just the cd rom tray) an ashtray, and a place to putt all my N.P. pictures... and of course there would be a hot grits container, as it is very inconvienent to walk all the way to the crock-pot in the kitchen...

my bad...Re:Careful... (was Re: wow...)
Hm. dunno about IBM. Seems they are too often overlooked as a source of good open source software. Ever hear of alphaWorks? What a huge cache of high-quality software, much of which is open source. (And as far as OS licenses go, the IBM public license seems to be a very nice and clean one.)
You are, of course, absolutely correct. I should have thought about my choice of corporate "mosters" a bit harder, I appologize.

posted to ZDNET this morning by me
NEWS: IGNORANCE ONLY BLISSFUL FOR THE IGNORANT.
Before you totally trash a movement/culture you should open your eyes and look at it.
If you want to see examples of great open source projects, look at www.freshmeat.net! They have nearly 100 postings a week of new software and updates to old software. There are 1000's of beautiful pieces of software out there that have 100% open source. GNOME/KDE, Linux, GIMP, Gnumeric (and friends), Licq, and the list goes on and on (those are just a few of the ones I use EVERYDAY).
I use Linux as my ONLY desktop environment. One day about 3 months ago I installed linux andput all my MS stuff in a box in the closet. Ever since I have been even more productive and learned than I ever was using window$. Just because mozilla is based on crappy corporate technology and its taking them a while to get the junk out, you feel the need to trash all of us. Open source isn't some fad or pipe dream! Its here and its now and its millions of users and developers coming to stomp corporate cultures long held beliefs that everything good is closed and information is property.
It would be nice of you to release a more informed article someday.

Can someone clear this up for me?
I appologize If someone has asked/answered this question already.
As a CS student graduating in the next year, I see a $50,000 or better "starting" salary upon graduation. I chose software as my specialty because I love solving problems and working with the abstract concepts programming provides. If software becomes universally open/free I'll still love writing it but, will I still be compensated at this phenominal rate? Obviously people will still make money on services provided by/for their software but, will a company still want to pay me huge amounts of money to write software everyone will be able to modify and use anyway they want?
In terms of earning potential, should I be regretting my decision not to study hardware engineering? Can we excpect to see a change in the dynamics of the IT labor force?
I'm not doing CS for the money, but it's certainly a very nice perk.

Just the software please.
I'd love to play with one of these things but, I really dont want to put it together. I'd much rather just write the code to make it do stuff.. It would also be nice to see a linux compiler for it.

MP3 is not going away.
He can sue until he's blue but, thats not going to stop people from trading this stuff. What he should be doing instead is finding a way to roll with the punches and make something good from it. He could make a few "just for MP3" songs and give them out, or something.
I personally have a rather extensive collection of MP3's (no Dr. Dre, I'm proud to say). I have been trading them for about 3 years. In this same 3 year period I have bought 5 CD's, before this 3 year period I owned a total of 2 CD's. MP3's have made me an avid music fan.
I appologize for the rhymes....

Where I work we have a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) system that is about the size of my $70 ink jet printer. In 5 years the PS in your PC will have this technology built in, and a loss of power will "always" lead to a graceful shutdown.

I think streaming video broadcasts are a great idea especially if you do the random object thing!
Just one camera pointing at some objects on the ground, each has a nametag. When you change topics move the objects around a bit.
A good bit to do each week would be to pick an object representing First Posters and destroy it in a new and creative way.

This is gunna be scary
I'm kinda torn up about this whole thing... On the one hand I want to see Microsoft torn to little bits. On the other hand we might be better off to let them dig their own hole.
I hate to see free economy intervention like this, because it lowers economic confidence. How many more bug riddled releases would microsoft have been able to make in the face of Linux 2.4, KDE 2.0, and GNOME?
The fact is, breaking up microsoft into smaller devisions is almost garunteed to make them produce higher quality software, especially if they are made to open the source. While I suppose this is good, it scares me. If breaking up microsoft simply leads to a bunch of lean and mean Redmond Machines, the result could be the opposite of what we want: MORE microsoft products, more monopoly type practices and more FUD, except now we'll get it from multiple directions!
My vote is to leave the sinking ship alone, just fine them and call it good.... Microsoft can't recover from this path of self destruction they are on, unless we help them.

Re:Summery of the summery..
No, Bill Joy wants to protect people by removing the open sharing of ideas which is the human aspect of technology. He is trying to lay claim to this quote because there is an "always," but he dose not understand science or progress, so he thinks that adding rigid restrictions on what people are allowed to talk about will protect people.
I'm not going to argue here, I was just commenting on that one sentence. It sounded like you were rippin the guy then agreeing with him on that one point... After looking it over again I realized the problem was possibly one of not enough quoting on your part :) I now understand how he ment that remark and how you were correct in your remark... sorry for not thinking harder, but If you read the comments under the subliminal message thread from yesterday you would understand it's not my fault.

Mutually Assured Destruction and other niceties.
I think nanotechnology immediatly provides an advantage to the offensive user, as it is almost always easier to break or kill something than it is to fix or revive the same thing. The secret to not letting a new technology destoy the world is to make sure everyone know the same stuff. I don't think the U.S. would have bombed Hiroshima if the Japanese could have built a bomb from plans on the internet. Mutually Assured Destruction is the only deterant for people who would choose to use technology for mass destruction.
Keep information free and abundant and everything'll be just dandy.
The best offense is a really big weapon, the best defense is a bigger weapon.

Re:Summery of the summery..
Joy's quote about "always apply a Just Law rigidly would be the greatest injustice" is crazy too. The whole point of Judges is to create a human aspect to the Law (and this is why we should repeal mandatory minimums), but Joy want's to....
ALWAYS applying a just law RIGIDLY, is what mandatory minimums are all about... that's why it's an injustice. You're arguing the same side here...

Slashdot must use subliminal messages because 2 months ago (before I found slashdot) I never read any news on the net. 2 months later I religously read 3 news sites and passivly read about 10 others and the refresh button on my browser is wearing out!
Food for thought: Imagine subliminal messages were shot at you via morse code your entire life and then one day you actually learned morse code. What do you think would happen?

yeah whatever... rationalize this!
"I cannot believe," writes Davies near the end of the book, "that our existence in this universe is a mere quirk of fate, an accident of history, an incidental blip in the great cosmic drama. Our involvement is too intimate. The physical species Homo may count for nothing, but the existence of mind in some organism on some planet in the universe is surely a fact of fundamental significance. Through conscious beings the universe has generated self-awareness. This can be no trivial detail, no minor byproduct of mindless, purposeless forces. We are truly meant to be here."
This one paragraph turned me off the rest of this book. There is no meaning to life, no greater purpose, and no great answer to "Life the Universe and Everything". I dont understand how he finds it so hard to believe that the mind is the culmination of trillions of random events since the begining of the universe. Given a universe so vast it's incomprehensible, and a time span that could just as well be infinite, it would be rediculous not to believe that self consciousness would evolve by chance. 1,000,000 monkeys at 1,000,000 keyboards will eventually write the greatest book ever writen, but they still wont understand a work of english (or latin for that matter).
If I back up a minute and assume there is some purpose to the universe, that still doesn't mean it has anything to do with consious beings! Maybe "God" had a thing for big rocks and the purpose of the universe is to see what happens to all the rocks.
Come to find out, it was all about the mice!

lets get a move on
Its time to really put some time and money into exploring our solar system and beyond... We waste billions of dollars a year on people who cant take care of themselves and people who cant plan for their own future, but we know next to nothing about the universe around us.
Its time to devote some resources to expanding the home of the human race. Big deal we screwed up a billion dollar mission, that shouldnt slow us down! Mistakes are common in new, complex fields!
If we took all the money we waste on "save the lazy people" programs and spent it on space exploration, not only would we have a ton of new jobs but the technological impact would be stagering. I know I'm offending all the bleading hearts out there, space is our greatest untapped resource, but the cup of idiots and gold diggers doth overflow. The only way to help those less fortunate is to grow the human race... create more niches and less people will suffer with what we have.
No one was unemployed when the mayflower landed on plymouth rock!
