When it sounds too good to be true...
... it probably is. The study sounded reminiscent of the study of IQ vs 2000 presidential voting, which requires some states to have average IQs almost in the drool-cup range.

Utah and IQ
According to some reports, Utah has/had the 49th lowest average IQ of the 50 states.

Re:Surprise
Just remember that 100 is the average IQ. There are as many on the bottom half of the bell as the top. If you need proof, spend some time in a grocery store. I'm actually surprised that some adults can tie their own shoes.
If the population sample that you are deriving an IQ from can't figure out how to tie their shoes then "100" doesn't really mean that much to me in the first place.
Before I get marked a Troll I will be emphatic in stating that this is not a slight to you or IQ tests in general, but rather I am stating that the concept of IQ (tests) does not necessarily mean intelligence but rather it means relative intelligence. It would be somewhat interesting if IQ stats could be listed by country or by state for example. The results may be dubious but entertaining. On that note I actually Googled "IQ statistics by State" just out of curiosity and I found this: http://chrisevans3d.com/files/iq.htm.

Re:Many thanks to the north east and north west!
Many thanks to the north east and north west!
So while the people in a state like Kansas focus all their attention on debating whether or not evolution should be taught in science classes, the people in states like Maine, Vermont, and Washington are defending their freedoms.
So where does Pennsylvania fit in there?
As a whole, the people of Kansas typically have a lower IQ than those from other states.
Patently absurd. For what it's worth, I've seen a few articles trying to relate states' I.Q.s to voting records and/or political leanings, and it's all very speculative. I've linked a couple of them below. The first has been largely acknowledged as a fabrication, the second attempts to accomplish what the first promised. Both are operating shaky ground in terms of correlation and causation, as are you my friend.
So, defend yourself. Let's see how you back up your assertions.

Re:Not teaching science in schools is not an optio
US schools are incredibly overfunded for the level of achievement they provide (on average). Increasing funding because something isn't working is nearly always the worst solution to a problem. The problem is that the funding is not being provided where it's needed. If you look at Average spending per pupil and SAT scores, there is a high correlation to the best funded with the best ranking. Ideally, the best solution would be to not make it acceptable/cool to not do well in math/science, but pragmatically, school districts across the country need to be provided with closer to the same level of funding.

you want more funny statistics?
average IQ by state -
Re:Really looking at the situation
IQ is a lousy way to determine intelligence. IQ seems most closely associated with the ability to do well on tests, rather than some innate "smarts".
If you want to get silly, take a look at this page. Clearly the future will be populated by idiotic Republicans, breeding like mad, while a handful of super-genius tree-hugging Democrats survive in Utopian nanotech habitats.
More practically, bearing children seems more closely related to urbanization rather than IQ. What's happening is that people are moving to cities where children are a burden. You still have high population growth in rural places, such as parts of India and China. Once 90% of the population are in cities, I say there's a good chance that populations worldwide start to decline. -
This does not belong here...
First of this is not a cabinet kit, this doesn't even include buttons or a stick! You would have to buy them from Happ Control. And this is nothing new, Ultimarc has been making these boards for years, they have some really great plug and play PCBs. Ultimarc's 28 input PCB is only $40, for years X-Arcade has been known for ripping off people that just didn't know better, nothing has changed. They didn't really used to hurt companies like Ultimarc, though now they will be edging into the PCB-only market, not to mention getting a sh1tload of hits from posts like this.
A while ago I built a pretty cheap JAMMA/Xbox/PS1/PS2/Dreamcast [link]. It was pretty cheap, but not $60. -
Re:Weird
Bush voters are morons
Sorry, he was right. -
Re:You lose some and you win some
You will inevitable lose some jobs, but you will also gain some jobs, but that isn't as obvious.
Yes, and Germany gives some proof, but the concept is too difficult.

It's a hoax
Check the author's sources. They prove it's a hoax that started in 2000.
That pages uses www.chrisevans3d.com/files/iq.htm as a source. It'll redirect you to attenuation.net/files/iq.htm. From there, you can find www.sq.4mg.com/IQschools.htm which has estimates for state IQ based on ACT/SAT tests. You'll notice that the IQs are much more evenly distributed. If you follow his link to http://www.sq.4mg.com/IQ-States.htm, you'll see links at the bottom to the unverified hoax IQ scores used in your chart. Someone simply updated the 2000 Gore/Bush chart for 2004. -
Re:Why, Ballmer, Why?
Who are in the majority by at least 3 million, according to a survey conducted a couple of days ago.
You were probably going for "+5 Funny" Here, but really you should get a "+5 Informative"
Note the 2000 Election correlation link at the bottom as well. -
Re:Why, Ballmer, Why?
Roses are #FF0000, violets are #0000FF, all my base are belong to you
Violets are closer to #8000FF.
I suppose I should try and move ontopic-ish and link to the original chart which is credited at the bottom of the image, and show that it links to this set of IQ data which lists Mississippi's average IQ as 95, not 85.
It should also be noted that these are based on school children's tests (grades 4, 8, and 10 if I'm not mistaken) and not on actual voters.
The best part is: "The IQ numbers were originally attributed to the book "IQ and the Wealth of Nations", though they do not appear in the current edition." In other words, the numbers in that chart are basically unverifiable.

Just build your own, it's very simple.
I wrote a tutorial a while back on building one of these control panels, and also building a cabinet to go with it. It's really very easy to wire up, you can see the buttons on the page linked in the story.
Please check it out, because it's a great project to do, and it's very simple, these X-Arcade and Hotrod guys are just raping people; you can build one of these dual sticks for about 20 dollars, and it's a lot of fun. -
Noise from HLT state etc..
Anyone who uses software powersaving/CPU cooling in windows or linux has heard this noise. Programs like CPUIdle et all put the processor into an HLT state and cool it significantly (12+ degrees here). I run the thing to cool my massive laptop which would get quite hot during renders and things, what with it's 10K RAID etc.. I hear this hum in a lot of electronics that have no moving parts (routers, computers, etc..), and have always wondered about it. In a chat on IRC we chalked it up to electric frequency vibration.
I have also worked on some PCs that make the hum during *any* processor use, like scrolling a webpage, etc.. -
build your own laptop.
I dunno, I decided to get 'serious' a while ago, and just converted an old laptop [Kaypro II] into a luggable desktop. It has everything I need, including a 10K RPM SCSI RAID, etc.. Also this finally put to rest the squabbles we used to get into at SIGGRAPH over who's laptop could render the fastest. OK, the solid steel reinforced frame puts it in at over 50 pounds, but I'm happy when I get where I'm goin. I know it's not for everyone, but I am not the 'I want to watch my own inflight movie, mew, mew, mew' type anyhow. It's great for going to conventions and being able to get some serious work done, not to mntion a great tribute to a great machine, long live Darth Vader's Lunchbox!
