Re:Bush has brought meaningful change...
"we've invaded Iraq and killed 100,000 Iraqis..."
Actually, that figure does not say that Americans were the killers. That figure includes all "excess deaths" that occurred in Iraq. In fact, only half of those deaths were do to violence, and it does not say what party was the cause of the death.
You should see what Iraqis think about this.
And, there were _many_ good reasons for invaded Iraq, a few of which I've listed elsewhere. -
Re: Vote Libertarian
"declare war on Iraq, etc - without pissing off most of the world in the process."
Of course, the rest of the world (except for Germany, IIRC) was being bribed by Saddam. Russia and France, especially. In fact, France was shown to be interfering w/ the inspection process by giving Iraq advance knowledge of where the inspectors were going.
I don't think anyone could have taken care of Iraq without making other countries mad. Maybe several years ago, but definitely not today.
For those of you interested in why Iraq was a threat to the US, you should Read a blog post I wrote on the subject. -
Re:Yeah?
> it has a few extra books that the protestents took out
Quite to the contrary, these books were added by Rome at Trento. Until them they were usually copied along the Bible without being considered part of the Canon, just like the Shepherd of Hemas before the Montanist heresy.
It was only when Luther decided to have them printed apart from the Bible that Rome decided to try to accuse him of tooking them out of where they never belonged...
> Jesus still says to Simon Peter "you are the rock upon which i shall build my church"
You misquote, actually "you art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church", Mt XVI:18 RSV, and the unanimous consent of the Fathers of the primitive churches is that the rock wasn't Peter, but his confession.
> whatever you shall hold true on Earth, i shall hold true in Heaven
Again you misquote: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven", Mt XVI:19 RSV. This is spoken of the church which started with Peter and the Apostles, and it goes without saying that an institution having for its head a man instead of Christ ceases to be a legitimate church.
n fact, the analogy of the keys relates to the custom of giving the keys of a city to the person appointed by the king to have authority there. The authority is taken by the king if it is not duly used.

Churches using copyrighted worship music.
A few years back, before we even got into the big issue of online music sharing, I remember hearing about churches getting sued for using copyrighted music for worship and reprinting the lyrics for all of the congregation (or even putting the lyrics on a transparency for an overhead projector) without permission from the copyright holder or even a blanket license like the CCL.
A friend of mine and I were both musicians and worship leaders at the time and he was the one who told me about the issue. He said he'd probably sue to get reimbursed for copyright violations, even from a church. I still don't think I would, but then I never depended on my music for my livelihood.
Many years later this ethical/spiritual debate was brought into the online world when P2P filesharing service ZPoc was shut down. I didn't know about this one myself until after the fact. I think it's an interesting area of the filesharing and fair use debates, since the issue of morality vs. legality is often brought up on both sides.

Re:Finally.. an end to religion
God: Well, it took a few billion years to... oh, never mind, let's call it "seven days".
The opening story in Gensis resembles a Pharaonic Drama. It is more poetic than literal. People sometimes need to look beyond the words written on the page...funny how my fellow members of a religion, where the founder was dissatisfied with how the current religious leaders had lost sight of the meaning of the words and instead focused on strict literal adherence to the law, are hell bent on making people accept a little story written a very long time ago in a very different time literally.
