Nickel and diming is everywhere
Be ready for nickel and diming across the board. I see strategic war games on Steam selling sprite packs for $2.50.
Browsing around yesterday, I knew that when I saw a "Buy today and get four landmarks free" advertisement for CitiesXL (MMO SimCity) that if I were look into its pricing scheme a bit more, I'd be in for a doozy: $9 a month to play with "free" content each month, followed by add-on packs called GEMs. Right now people are in an uproar over it because the general impression is that people will need to start paying the monthly fee to have access to mass transit in their single-player cities, something many consider an essential part of a city/world-building game as opposed to an optional add-on.
In my mind, ignoring facts that I'm sure will prove otherwise, nickel and diming all started with Elder Scrolls: Oblivion's horse armor for $2.50

CitiesXL
I`ve posted about this game before, but CitiesXL is a great example of game producers getting input from the community during development. The game is basically going to be a city managing simulation ala Sim City. So far, it looks like a pretty incredible offering, with some neat elements involving online play. Release date so far is vague, but I`d guess Fall 09.

Re:Where is simcity 5 for the pc? I want to have r
After EA made the decision to let Tilted Mill create SimCity Societies, many fans figured the series would just die. EA wanted the SimCity series to go towards a different direction, with less micromanagement and more, as they call it, "social engineering simulation."
To be fair to Tilted Mill, their developers did pay a lot of attention to the forums and try to accommodate fans, but they were headed in the opposite direction under the guidance of EA.
Personally, I'm looking forward to Cities XL - which does seem promising and a lot like the older SimCity games before EA made the switch.
And I'm not bashing SimCity Societies - it's just not my cup of tea.
