Re:Did google ruin the internet?Yeah, money is evil, it destroys communities and pretty much everything.
But seriously, you exaggerate. Only few would make any money from their blogging or sites yet many sites appear. For most of the bloggers I know putting an ad link is something extra, something that you do just for the heck of it. You can easily tell those who blog for money (or try to) from those who blog to express themselves - the former usually don't have anything to say. And if someone has something to say that is so interesting to people that he is able to get real readership and thus ad revenue then what's wrong with that?
Same goes for forums etc. - no one forces you to post on a form whose policies you don't accept. And if there is no forum/community that would suit you start one with the policies exactly the way you want them to be.

Re:No Surprise
We have more than to parties in the U.S. as well.
We've got the Greens.
We've got the Libertarians.
We've go the Socialists.
We've got the Communists. (Who seem to have abandoned the hammer for a gear, but they're sticking to the sickle.)
We've got the Constitution Party.
Now, there is some collusion between the two entrenched parties and the media to create a de facto two-party system. Furthermore, plurality voting creates the environment for a two-party system.
Some are willing to fight it.

Re:Technology
I'd rather my president have a combatitive relationship with industry than a friendly relationship.
Then you should vote for these guys.

Re:Run screaming from this!!!
So, to refute my 2002 reference, you argue back with a survey that is more than 10 years old? A lot has changed since 1988-1993.
You provide two links. One whose second sentence admits there is debate on income inequality (and references your 10 year old survey). The second at a web site called "leftbusinessobserver.com" I think an opinion piece on The Communist Party USA web page would have more credibility than the Left Business Observer.
I found something from Hong Kong via Google that I thought looked pretty unbiased, and you send me to links with multiple and severe flaws in credibility. -

Re:Where's the Communist Party candidate??
Not sure if you meant this as a joke, but they clearly refute this claim on their site. However, they do think Bush is bad for the country, but I bet on the political spectrum they see little difference between Bush and Kerry.

Where's the Communist Party candidate??
Oh, that's right, the Communist Party of America is supporting John Kerry!!

Re:Censorship? Not really.
I know that many European countries (Italy, for example) have "communist parties"
I hate to single this out from a post based entirely on inductive reasoning and speculation, but the United States has a Communist Party too.

Re:Before you vote!
Thanks for the link (didn't know a US Communist Party existed). If you'd bother to follow it, you'd see that. '2. The CPUSA does not endorse any candidate for President in the 2004 election.'.
Um, and no, I am not and have never been a member of the Communist Party. -
Re:Before you vote!
Oddly enough, the CPUSA did endorse him (as they have all Democratic nominees since 1988 IIRC).

Re:Frosty Pee
In other news, COMMUNISM. Isn't it time you joined The Party?
-
Re:When is civil disobedience justified?
Then vote for whomever the CPUSA or the Libertarian National Socialist Green Party support.

Riiiiight!
Apple's dev resources are the best? Nothing, and I mean *nothing* beats MSDN. Not gay Apple's docs and definitely not socialist GNU/Linux's docs. Microsoft takes care of its developers.

Re:Make a Third Choice! We have a third party (Greens), and a fourth party (Libertarians), and a fifth party (Socialists), and a sixth party (Communists)... not necessarily in that order, but we have them.
The problem is that the American voting system discourages people from voting for what they believe in, and forces them to vote for the lesser of two evils.
The accounting error that placed George W. Bush in office would not have been an issue had a large segment of the liberal population not decided to vote -- for once -- by their consciences. Ralph Nader won about 2.7% of the popular vote in 2000 (Buchanan, the next most popular conservative to Bush, took less than 0.5 percent of the popular vote from Bush). It isn't unreasonable to assume that almost 100% of those people who voted for Nader would have preferred Gore to Bush. If even one percent had voted strategically (for the lesser of two evils), the Florida fiasco would not have been an issue.
I'm a firm proponent of electoral reform, so that people can vote their consciences without jeopardizing their position and letting the greater of two evils seize the power. However, until that time, I hope that the American public votes insincerely so that we don't end up with a repeat of the 2000 election.

O'Reilly teaches Linux sysadmin courses. You said you want a GNU/Linux course. The GNU/Linux sysadmin course is taught at your local commune.

Re:Latest and greatest not for everyone
if you were given the choice to upgrade that old copy of Windows 95 to say Windows 98 or better (I use that term loosely) for FREE (and assuming it still ran on the crappy hardware from years ago) then I am sure you would jump at the chance.
Maybe they don't support the Linux philosophy. -
Re:Umm....Um, the Communist Party USA quit running presidential candidates about ten years ago. They now instruct their members to vote the Democratic ticket.
This is not a joke. You can look it up.I did, and they do. Not in so many words, but read it for yourself.

TO ALL HATERS OF FASCISM:
To all who believe in working together to forge a nation of educated, dedicated individuals who support one another, who seek peace and democracy for a united world and economic prosperity for all people, black, white, yellow, red or brown, there is an alternative.
We are still here, and we still have a dream... the dream of One World, One Peaceful Nation. It can happen, but we need your help and your belief that if we work together, fight for the rights and equity if common people everywhere, and support attitudes that foster peace and responsible self-government, we can and will someday be one small happy planet together. -
ITS SIMPLE VOTE CP
This is what happens in a capitalist society. This november give the communist party another shot.
They aren't all like Kim Jong. Just look at the good its done for China and Vietnam. Communists support Linux and OSS, they fight for the citizens rights without taking them away, and almost everybody is guaranteed a job. Now with capitalism you're a slave with your rights constantly under threat.
Please think before you vote.

Capitalism sucks. Just look at this article

Re:Thanks to the Bush administration's stance ...*yawn*
Ah a walking, talking tragedy... To think, I spent four years in the Army defending your freedom. Such is the state of public education in the nookyooler power known as 'merika. I mean, really--if you're going to lay flamebait on me, at least make it worthy of response.
Ken Lay (or as prezitend george likes to call him "kenny boy"), has a long history contributing to the prezitend.
I'm talking about Enron executives, not Enron. Get it? I'm talking about people directly responsible for creating the California energy crisis, who were responsible for stealing the retirement of thousands of hard working aging people, who are still walking free. I'm talking about Ken Lay in particular. A person who has been working closely with the Bush family for over a decade.
I'd invite you to discuss this, but I'm sure you'll just cry some more. It's okay, you can cry, just don't expect me to listen.

Very sad day today.
Folks, this is a terrible loss to the Linux community. Leonard will be sorely missed by all those who knew him and made use of his fine work. Mr. Zubkoff clearly stretched a hand out to all Linux users by donating his time and effort to improve the lives of others. Leonard, you will be missed.

Re:America, why bother?
Here's where I will get modded down as well, but hopefully you will see this. Please visit:
http://www.cpusa.org and join in the cause. The American people (and the other peoples of the world, at the hands of America) will continue to be raped by the wealthy classes until the workers (we may be tech workers these days, but we are *still* workers) realize that the labor is OURS.
Those big fat guys at Enron (and their friends) are only on top because we are willing to let them stay there, in part because we've been brainwashed into thinking that beyond the borders of America, there be dragons, so we should be satisfied with whatever the hell the status quo is here now.
If you're really fed up, take the time to make a difference. Together we can build a better world.
Merry Christmas, everybody! -
Re:hurt prost
That's funny, there's no mention of him here.

Hate in AmericaThe US has a long history of hate movements. And they've always ended up as fringe nut groups.
The American Nazi Party was a joke. The Klu Klux Klan is moribund. McCarthyism ended up with McCarthy out of power. The Communist Party of the United States limped along for decades as a fringe group. (They're still there! "Workers of the World, Log In") David Duke and Stormfront are pushing white separatism, while the Nation of Islam is pushing black separatism. None of these have ever been a threat to the country. None of them are taken seriously. None are popular enough to get any political power or elect more than the rare public official now and then. They just don't matter.
Europe has a different history. Their nut groups have, on occasion, grown big enough to start major wars. So it's clear why Europe worries more.
But it won't work. Efforts to shut the nuts up won't be totally effective. If censored, they get to act like martyrs and continue to distribute their stuff anyway. Censorship in a reasonably open society doesn't work. Making it work requires heavy repression. Remember Falun Gong? So censorship is a first step to worse things, first merely to keep the censors from looking stupid, and later from real fear.

Re:Libertarianism
Democracy (not Republic)
Certainly sounds nice... like one of the Party guys said, the Party could have written 70% of his platform.
The problem is, he's still a captialist, and some of us are afraid that a Nader government would result in what we call "happy capitalism," where the exploitation continues, but we all feel ok about it. Think of your local evening news three months ago- sure, cops killed an unarmed man in the alley, but, DAMN, look at the stock market fly! What a great country!
Anyway, if Nader actually won the election, we'd be much beter off than if Gore won (won't even talk about Shrub). I'd jump for joy, but as it is, he's got like 7% in the polls. He might pick up as much as 15% when all is said and done, and I wish him and the Greens luck, but I have no false hopes. -
Re:LibertarianismNot to "me, too!", but, right on! While I'm not totally down with Nader (if these guys ran a candidate, s/he'd have my vote for sure), he's a helluva lot better than Bushgore, and I feel like the Libertarian party would just hand over totall control of the nation to corporations (not that they don't practically 0wn us already).
What gets me is that the Libertarians seem to extend laisse-faire to their own political actions: I protested at the Republican National Convention as part of the Young Communist League contingent. There were about 50 of us from around the country, hundreds of Greens, lots of anarchists, lots of ultra-leftist "free Mumia" types... and maybe 10 libertarians.
They all wore orange shirts, and I saw 'em march around in a circle chanting "hey hey, ho ho, the IRS has got to go" for about 20 minutes, then they disappeared. That was the first and last I saw of them. Way to stick it to the man, y'all.
Anyhoo, the way I see it, the Libertarian party is the "nice republicans." They've got the same "I've got mine, so fuck you" mentality, and only really differ on social issues like drug laws and separation of church and state.
I have a friend who's a self-described anarchist, who bases his political ideals on the idea that no one should have power over him. I see that same streak in the Libs: "I'm too smart to have people rule over me." Horse shit. As long as humans number in the billions, there's got to be an organizing structure. I, personally, am loathe to let corporations, religion or the wealthy 1% have any part of that structure, so I act. I'm out on the weekends, recruiting voters or YCL members, passing out campaign literature or the People's Weekly World newspaper or doing strike solidarity (go Verizon workers!).
It takes work to make a difference, and it also takes a clear idea of what's what. Libs, it's not the government that's fucking you, it's the corporations that own the government. Economics dictate politics in a capitalist society, not the other way around, and the only way to fix our political system is to fix our economic system.
The above is all widly disjointed, but I think my main points were in there someplace =). OT arguments, please use e-mail.
