Not so different from any other development model
What is more puzzling is what the existence of two camps creating such huge codebases for a fundamental application type says about the whole state of open source development at this time. It clearly isn't the idealistic world it tries to present itself as."
How exactly is this different from, say, a developer or team of videogame developers, leaving a company they were fed up with, to create their own with new and fresh ideas for innovative and competitive products? Happens all the time.
Ah, yes, almost forgot this tiny difference: with open source software, the LibreOffice guys didn't have to start from scratch...

Re:Wiiiii!
Well, according to Eidos [which just happens to make only two Wii games], if people don't buy games for the Wii, then developers will stop making games for it:
http://www.cubed3.com/news/9004/2/Eidos:_Wii_May_Lose_Support_in_2008Another case of the blindingly obvious, combined with implied FUD [implying that the people aren't buying games for it and that developers will stop developing for it soon].

Re:Xbox 360 is a flop
My statistics differ from your statistics.
The Wii has sold more than 6 million, and Microsoft has been stuffing the retail channel with 360s to inflate "sales" (shipped) numbers to meet projections.
Wikipedia is not a valid source for things like this. -
Let's see....
So let's see, rumble technology is soooo last generation, but we've made an expensive agreement to offer it for anything new we've developed. We can force anyone who's rich enough to have bought a PS3 to buy new controllers to upgrade. (If they really want this ancient technology.)
PS3 owners should be really exploiting the motion sensitivity of the PS3 as this is sooo current generation. So current generation that our developers haven't made many games for it. (Although the Wii is obviously a gimmick.)
Our supply system is so good, that we have PS3s sitting on people's shelves. (Although I defy anyone of you from trying to find any PS3s!)
I feel so sorry for the SONY PR department. I honestly don't think the Sony Playstation development department knows what they're doing at all with the PS3 anymore. The PR department is running around trying cover up the Sony Product Development blunders with every step they take.

Re:Consoles over, but not the games
The submitter is probably just quoting the idiotic groupthink from the article Digg linked That story was about new shipments to Taiwan being terminated. The linked article barely mentions the GC.

Re:Hope for the Wii version
"High texture rate"? I'm sure you mean resolution, but if you're looking for art "direction" (because art design isn't any terminology I'm familiar with either) I was pleased with these environmnents in particular:

That looks pretty unique, but your tone sounds like you're just set to be unintested in anything regardless of it's quality, so maybe you should just not bother replying. -

Re:Ok so basically
THQ went on record stating that the development costs for a Wii game was 25-50% that of the other next gen consoles.

Re:One million per month?
The 2004 numbers are easy. About 510,000 were shipped to stores. It is assumed all of them were sold. Keeping track of the Media Create numbers, the PSP has sold about 1.25 million units to consumers life to date in Japan.
The 3 mil number was projected # shipped (or sold to retailers) worldwide. Since the end of 2004 there hasn't been a Japanese shortage. There were probably a few hundred thousand in the system. They promised 1 million units for the American launch. That adds up to about the 3 million units.
The American numbers aren't so easy to find. Nintendo claimed a 2.5 to 1 DS to PSP ratio worldwide, but I haven't heard an independent source back that up. -
