Smash Bros Brawl Creators Hint at Sonic
Wowzer writes "Nintendo hopes that Solid Snake's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii will encourage other publishers to allow their characters to join the Smash Bros. line-up, and is already actively negotiating for the rights to include at least one or two other non-Nintendo character. The plot thickens when Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto say that 'Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog is the character that Smash Bros. fans have requested the most.' This begs the question, which non-Nintendo characters are most likely to appear?"
... actually "Beg the question"
At any rate; Princess Toadstool ftw ;-)
Oh god, that woman is John Romero!
If anything, this will give the old sega fanboys a chance to beat up on Mario with Sonic.
Master Chief! Yeah, like that would happen.
Seriously tough, how about someone from the Street Fighter series, but the baby version of the character, not the grown up one, which were showcased in some jewel Street Fighter based game.
Please, NOT a Final Fantasy character, especially Sephiroth, Cloud or Vincent. Those characters have been showcased in other games enough.
Seriously tough, how about Mega Man? He is similar to Samus tough gameplay wise, unless you have combos that allow him to change his style? That would make him pretty unique.
Or, even tough he is not a video game character, maybe Samuel "The Man" Jackson? He's badass enough for this yet doesn't take himself seriously.
Go for the eyes, Boo! Go for the eyes! Raaaaghhhh!!!!
if third party developer's characters are to be included....
square enix is a third party...
cloud/sephiroth/chrono vs. snake anyone?
... is Sierra's own Liesure Suit Larry. I don't want to know what his special weapon is, though.
Pyramid Head from Silent Hill.
Would love seeing him vs Princess Peach.

MegaMan would be great!!!
Very improbable, but I want to see Commander Keen!
I'd like to see the guy from Altered Beast. Not sure I ever knew any names from that game, though.
How about Simon Belmont? Wario, too.
A few years ago, a few friends of mine and I came up with a list of Sega Characters we'd like to see in Smash Brothers. Unfortunately, Sega doesn't exactly have the multi series character lineup that nintendo has, so we were a bit pressed. Here's the list, though.
Sonic
Tales
Knuckles
Dr. Robotnick
The two guys from Altered Beast
Megaman characters would be a great addition to the game as well, although I'm not sure how much they count as Sega, as I think the last MegaMan game was realeased for the PS1/2
It's a short list. Although we wouldn't have been too adverse to adding the Darkstalkers too.
Fly me to the moon Let me sing among those stars Let me see what spring is like On jupiter and mars
Pac Man.
From the Megaman X series!
A yoshi character might be cool, too.
Informatus Technologicus
I like how this blog doesn't have a source for its information or anything...
A wise man once said, "wtf h4x."
Cubed3 is reporting that it comes from a magazine, Tips and Tricks, which was scanned and posted on the nintendo forums
...then how about Skies of Arcadia's Vyse? He's already been featured on the Gamecube, and c'mon, he's a two sword-wielding sky pirate!
I wouldn't mind seeing Leeroy Jenkins in there. . . maybe the cast of FF1, Fighter, BlackMage and Ninja would be pretty awesome. Again some of Capcom's characters would be pretty sweet, someone mentioned Gem Fighter SD style chars. . .In Fact, I wouldn't mind seeing Nintendo, Capacom, and SNK, to collaberate, like maybe making the "funny, non serious" Smashbros style, then the more serious Capcom VS SNK VS Marvel kind of thing.
disclaimer: I've been known to store numbers in my ass for which to dig out when quantities are required.
dopefish or maybe just the doom guy
How about Kid Chameleon? Vectorman? Bonk? Aero Acrobat? Keith Courage?
It would be great if Sonic was in there, like EGM 'predicted'...
they say EGM fooling around with Sheng Long led to the character of Akuma being added to SF2 Turbo.
SO YOU'RE GOING TO DIE: The Comic for Dealing with Death
Wario's in the new one, look around and find the trailer. Looks to be promising...
First one: Sonic as washed-up former A-list star who now spends his days appearing in sad attempts to recapture his past glory, or alternately lying on the couch downing Bud after Bud while wallowing in memories of his distant heyday. In this scenario, a Brawl appearance would be the big break that slingshots him back to stardom; at the very least we ought to give it to him out of pity.
Second one: Sonic as beauty pageant winner who is revealed to have posed nude for Playboy or whatever. That is, he's comported himself so shamefully (*cough cough SONIC RIDERS cough*) that he should be disqualified from the position.
So, yeah. I really hope they don't choose Sonic. Ten years ago I probably would have been cool with it, but now?
http://samusnaked.ytmnsfw.com/
(No, it's not really Samus naked. Just a bit of bad language.)
Anyway, I personally would love to see Sonic in there, but I readily admit that would feel so weird, almost wrong.
I'd like to see them include some more Pokemon characters. Maybe have a Zangoose (would be a great speedy brawler) or a Farfetch'd/Marowak who would use a club and a boomerang style attack system.
Maybe even include some Digimon (Bandai arn't too harsh with their licencing) where you digivolved every time you beat another player. That way if you could rack up say 4 kills you would become quite powerful and instead of all going at it suddenly you'd be the main target.
If we're talking game characters (even though the above have been in more games than a lot would even realize) I'd like to see Bomberman (old school) included, with alternative skins to include the Punk, cowboy and maybe the female bomber from 3.
A Koopa troopa would be cool, they could even include a variety of shells on a level, so you can change your powers by jumping into them (Use the mario world system for this, it's simple and everyone knows whats going on).
What I would really like to see expanded though is the maps. Melee was full of small maps where you had no real tactics other than to spam your best moves if you played more than 1 on 1. Where as some larger maps like Hyrule Castle would make for a weapon change.
But then I suppose my "real" hope is they include some of the Mana series. Even if it's only making a kameo where Rabites appear in some level.
I like muppets.
Sonic
Megaman
PacMan
Bonk
Crash Banditcoot
Banjo-Kazooie
RayMan
Strider
Shinobi
Arthur from (Ghosts N' Goblins)
Little Mac (Yes, I know he's a Nintendo Character)
Spiderman
Ryu (From Street Fighter)
Heihachi (From Tekken)
Dirk The Daring and Singe(From Dragon's Lair)
Gizmo and Stripe(From Gremlins)
Bub and Bob (From Bubble Bobble)
That's all I can think of for now...
DEAD DEAD DEAD DELETE ME
How about every single one of the characters in the Ultimate Showdown Flash Animation?
Especially the guy who wins. That would be awesome.
"Live as if you'll die tomorrow." Ridiculous. You could die later today.
Because you have your preferences set to put Game Section articles on the front page. Try logging out and you'll see that it's not really on the front.
geh, SSB Really has the potential to become a mega-brawler, no puns intended. The thing Nintendo has to worry about is adding The characters they want to while not staining the brand. They MUST keep this SSMB up to par with the others, or it will seem like empty fanservice and end the brand.
That said, I'd really like to see the following characters included (only characters from games that have been on nintendo consoles, I might add!)
Alucard, Yoko Belnades, Julius or Trevor Belmont.
Zero, X.
Hero, the Sprite and the girl from Secret of Mana. (hero with sword, sprite with spear, girl with axe!)
The character that really needs to be added is Phoenix Wright and his Index Finger of Doom!
"Take That!"
would be an interesting pick and possibly more likely than others since his game is on a current system. All the different souls also gives a lot of flexibility for special moves. And then have Alucard as a hidden/mirror character with slightly different powers.
What a terrible night to have a curse...
He needs a villian! They have Koopa, wario, mario (to dk) ect. Sonic would need a villian to go with him.
Now who could that be... hmmm...
Demented But Determined.
Each time I play SSB I spend far too long choosing character, then panic and choose yoshi. I agree, it would be cool to be able to play as Sonic, or Knuckles, or Tails, or Doctor Robotnic, Sonic's girlfriend, or that bee thing, or as the palm tree from Green Hill Zone act 1, or Cloud, Gambit, Ryu + Ken + Akuma + Dan, the NPC character in the first little village that will one day become your nemesis, the Androgynous blob on level 2, etc, you get the point. I think everyone has a fave character they'd like to play as - but when do you call enough enough? Maybe all those 'natsukashii' nostalgic characters could be linked to their corresponding virtual machine games - or just have an online character shop.
...I would say that Krystal from Star Fox Adventures/Assault would be a good addition.
First, she's from a second-party game, so it doesn't really break the whole "Nintendo characters" thing.
Second, she would use the SFAdventures staff as her weapon, which could work pretty well. It can be her jump boost (using the rocket part), it can shoot some sort of beam, it can shoot fire and ice, it can be used to hit people with. She would make a well rounded character with her own attacks. (Although she'd be quick, she'd would take more damage.)
Gordon Freeman, in the flesh. Or, should I say, in the hazard suit?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If done well it could be cool.
My personal favorite would be Thundercats. It'll never happen, but I can dream.
I've always been surprised that Megaman and Simon haven't been in or been hinted at being in the game. Their series were staples on the NES--moreso than Ice Climber.
Crono
Based on the trailer, Wario will already be joining the cast for SSBB. (W00t -- my favorite character ever since playing him in Mario Kart 64 battle mode.)
Unfortunately, I think that _really_ realistic characters like Gordon Freeman and Solid Snake (and unlike Fox--how do they get off saying a furry is "realistic"?) would probably be just too similar to both merit inclusion--they both would probably use handguns and rocket launchers, even though Snake has CQC (assumedly) and Gordon has the Crowbar. Maybe Gordon could be a clone of Snake: wouldn't using the gravity gun for throws be fun? Whip out that RPG, toss a headcrab--who knows?
However--and I hate to think this way--we have to keep in mind that Nintendo is a Japanese company. They're more than likely polling Japanese gamers for their favorite characters; I don't think that Half-life is quite as popular across the sea as it is here in the U.S., at least.
But, hell, maybe someone should send a note to Valve?
Sonic Rush on the NDS rocks though...
I think Earthworm Jim would be a fun character to include.
The only extra character they need to add.

Excite bike. 'Nuff said.
What about Wart from Super Mario Bros 2? I don't think he's been in any other games even though he is part of the Mario universe, when enemies like Birdo have been seen again.
Some other ideas:
Bubbles, the fish like thing from Clu Clu land
Some enemy from Metroid... Ridley? Kraid?
R.O.B. (hey, he's in Mario Kart on the DS)
Bub and/or Bob from Bubble Bobble (kinda like the Ice Climbers)
Bomberman
Whatever that guy's name was in Kung Fu
The guy from Balloon Fight
Little Mac from Punch-Out
I mean that would be like having both Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny in the same film!
My vote for a third party character would be Alex Kidd. He could start out the fight as being somewhat decent but as time goes on he would create a sucking vortex that no character could escape; just like his games!
On another note... Solid Snake is still allowed on a plane, right? What about his brother Liquid Snake?
Evander Holyfield from Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Boxing
Now of course he'll need more moves than just "punch". I was thinking Mike Tyson could jump in and bite a piece of his ear off spraying blood all over the surrounding enemies. Then maybe use some training equipment from the game as melee weapons (Jump ropes, weights, etc.)
Someone already mentioned Strider, Trevor Belmont, Alucard, Mega Man, the Battletoads, Bill Rizer (Contra), and the Lee brothers from Double Dragon.
Some others entertaining returns from the old days could be:
'nuff said...
Castlevania's Belmonts (any of em). Alucard and Soma are all well and good, but the whip toting Simon Belmont (and Trevor) were seminal figures in the NES days and would make the most sense of adding any Castlevania characters. Of course adding all of them would be most welcome :)
I vote for the dog from nethack. Nothing like kicking butt with a fully rendered "d" in all it's glory.
Introducing Microsoft Vacuum 1.0 The first Microsoft product that doesn't suck.
The Nameless Hero from Shadow of the Colossus.
He could climb EVERYTHING. And focus light onto other charecters and start em on fire, with his sword. (I know that didn't happen, but it isn't out of the question, exactly.)
I loved that game.
C'mon. This was taken from an interview that came out about a week after Brawl's big (and only) announcement. And with the original announcement was the idea that there would be a poll to see what everyone (in Japan)'s favorite characters were to be put in Brawl. If I remember, Sonic had over 50% of the vote, followed by Megaman and Ridley (along with a few others).
Basically, Sonic's inclusion is totally insured. Nintendo pretty much HAS to do it now, or risk looking like the poll was a total scam. At this point, Sonic probably has a better chance of making it in then, say, Zelda (who I really hope stays, as well). So I wish we would drop it already. He's going to be in, period, whether you like him or not (I'm kinda indifferent, though I think he does fit in wonderfully with the franchise).
They're not going to announce his inclusion until just before the game is released, you can count on that... because it's quite possibly the hottest debate out of ANY regarding the makeup of Nintendos soon to be released games, and announcing him will kill the suspense for Brawl.
I just hope they don't include TOO many new characters, and aren't afraid of getting rid of some old ones (trading out characters like Pichu, Mewtwo, Marth, Roy, and Falco and giving other characters in their respective series a chance), or the game will likely become unbalanced.
Multiplayer Gaming (defined): Sitting around, discussing single-player games with my friends, at the bar.
Tycho and Gabe from Penny Arcade!
Kid Icarus would be a great, classic nintendo addition. Who doesn't want to beat up on a little cherub wearing a diaper?
...giant enemy crab?
"It's a reverse vampire...they....they crave the sun!"
The Guy from Bionic Commando
:-P
Kid Chameleon
Space Ace / Dexter (Forgot to mention him w/ Dirk The Daring)
Bald Bull or King Hippo from PunchOut.
Bomberman
Kid Niki
The Ninja from Ninja Gaiden (NES version)
If they did do Sonic, I'd like to see more characters from that series such as Tails, Knuckles and MetalSonic.
Stanley The Bugman from Donkey Kong 3
TMNT!
Megaman X and Zero
DEAD DEAD DEAD DELETE ME
Probably because they're not Nintendo IP. However, since they're branching out (Solid Snake), they may not be out of the question.
As for Nintendo IP, how about Mike from StarTropics? That game never got the love it deserved. Plus, he can probably have differing yo-yo attacks.
Original or Monsterland version. Either would be cool.
CAPTAIN PLANET!
According to the Wikipedia:
...
In logic, begging the question is the term for a type of fallacy occurring in deductive reasoning in which the proposition to be proved is assumed implicitly or explicitly in one of the premises. For an example of this, consider the following argument: "Only an untrustworthy person would run for office. The fact that politicians are untrustworthy is proof of this." Such an argument is fallacious, because it relies upon its own propositionin this case, "politicians are untrustworthy"in order to support its central premise. Essentially, the argument assumes that its central point is already proven, and uses this in support of itself.
More recently, "begs the question" has been used as a synonym for "invites the question" or "raises the question", or to indicate that "the question really ought to be addressed". In this usage, "the question" is stated in the next phrase. The following is an example: "This year's budget deficit is half a trillion dollars. This begs the question: how are we ever going to balance the budget?" This usage is often sharply criticized by proponents of the traditional meaning, but it has nonetheless come into common use.
Well, there you have it. Off-topic, but informative. Mod point war!
One suggestion I heard from someone a while back was Jack (the farmer) from Harvest Moon.
Hear me out, here. He has all the markings: Variety of weapons (scythe, hammer, hoe... watering can?), cartoony flavor (he looks great in Save the Homeland), and completely original. Come on, he could even pull out chickens / dog for attack or defense. It'd be great.
C'mon, Nintendo / HAL. Include Jack in SSBB and I'll buy a Wii for sure!
One of the blocks from Tetris! And they could give it special moves like rotate and fall really fast. Now, which one would it be? The square? Or maybe the backwards "L".

"Horrible."
Ah, Simon's Quest. Great-grandpappy of the Metroidvanias.
Gamefaqs.com runs a character battle yearly and I'm sure whoever is on the top of the list people would want in the game. This would include Chrono (Chrono Trigger), Mega Man, Cloud, Sephiroth and Vincent (FF7). All the other highly ranked characters in the character battle are already in the game.

Viewtiful Joe/Sexy Silvia/Captain Blue, anyone?
Let the commencement BEGINULATE!
I mean classic: Simon Belmont, a character with a real chain whip. The Boy and his Blob, jellybean attacks. The Moai Head from Gradius, Konami's object of obsession. The protagonist from ActRaiser, he's a god! Jason from Blaster Master, no rationale needed
How about these:
Q-bert
Frogger
The bartender from Tapper
I was hoping they would include more Nintendo owned charcters like Kid Icarus! /silly
Commander Gaylord from the Horse Academy series. That would rock....
I'd love to see Mai Shiranui join the SSBB! She's dreamy.
I hear that. Bomberman would rock. Also, since Ubisoft is huge on the Wii I wouldn't be surprised to see Rayman (he would fit more naturally than Snake) or the Prince of Persia. (Sam Fisher with Snake would seem redundant though).
Rune Walsh and Chaz Ashley from Phantasy Star IV. One with explodey magic of doom, one with a sword that doesn't look like it's seriously overcompensating for something (Cloud, I'm looking at you). Or Wren from PSIII. Turn into a plane and dive-bomb the other players!
"You can either have software quality or you can have pointer arithmetic, but you cannot have both at the same time."
Strong Bad (Alt for of 'Stinko-Man'), and Trogdor the Burninator would make Great additions.

They only have room for, at most, 5 3rd party characters (and Solid Snake already takes up one of those slots).
Only characters who have appeared in a game on a Nintendo console (home or handheld) are acceptable. (Sonic is viable due to 3 Sonic GBA games, and Sonic Rush on DS.)
There was a poll on Sakurai's blog, and Sonic came in first, I don't remember what the other characters were, but a few dedicated Nintendo fansites reported on it a month or so after E3 this year. I know for certain Megaman was in the top 10 requested.
