Tissue or Kleenex?
I have no idea if it's just a bad translation, or if they just really have no clue that there are other fantasy role playing games other than Dungeons and Dragons, so they're using it as a generic term.
Also, just because you have folks who are dressed up and have foam weapons, it's not necessarily a LARP. There's also the category 'Live Action Wargamers', who fight, but don't go for that whole character development type stuff. Darkon, Markland, Dagorhir and to some degree, the SCA come to mind. (but the SCAdians will probably take offense to that).
LARPs tend to be less about combat... stuff like NERO and Archaea.
(I have no idea where Amtgard falls, as the only times I've seen their members, they were swinging pretty soft.. and they were using PVC cores, which would break quickly in most wargames, but that might not be all groups) -
Re:is it a non-productive use of time?If you want to get in on that, here are some links for you:
Dagorhir Battle Games
Belegarth Battle GamesThese two offer the best balance between realism and role-playing. If you want more realism, go to the SCA. If you want more role-playing, there's ampgard and larp, which I find a bit cheesy (using hacky-sacks to represent fireballs. When one hit the ground, everyone withing 5ft has to die.)

Re:SCA!They're pretty much the only people left in the world who make battle-quality chain mail, scale mail, and plate mail in the medieval style.
There is a lot more than just the SCA out there. You should really see some of the Dagorhir and Markland armour.
Plus tons more with a little bit of googling... -
Re:My one-and-only shot at live action role-playin
There are actually groups that do this frequently. There is the origional, Dagorhir, The rescent spin-off called Belegrath MCS, and if you want more role-playing, Amtgard. I've never participated in Amtgard, but I have in Dagorhir and Belegarth, and while the concept of dressing up in medeval clothing and fighting with foam swords and sheilds on central campus seems strange to some people, it it actually a lot of fun, and it's completly safe...doing it several hours a week for a year, the worst injury I ever sustained was a bloody nose.

Tolkien Battle Lords.
Ok sure, this may not be totaly "on topic" but it is the background to what turned me into a Tolkien fanatic.
I play a LARP, called Dagorhir battlegames, that combines Tolkien's Middle Earth, the Dark Ages, and pure fantasy in a full contact combat sport. It is the most fun that I have had in years and is an amazingly cheap yet rewording hobby.
Check out the website. Look at the pictures. See you at the next battle! -

I love this book.
It is an excellent book and one that I am glad that I added to my library.
I am a sucker for a lot of J.R.R. Tolkien stuff largely because I play about a Tolkien based LARP called Dagorhir Battlegames which has elements of middle earth, the dark ages, and fantasy rolled into a full contact combat sport. There are some pictures of it here. During our big regional war, called Ragnarok, they shot footage for a documentary called "Searching for the Hobbit". Gods that was a fun, crazy week.
I guess I got way off topic there but the book is an essiential resource and even makes a nice coffee table book. There is so much cool stuff coming now that they are making movies. I cannot wait! -
