Re:condolences
According to the article S754 is going to actually outlast S939.

Re:But what about...
As usual, the specs are misleading (but everybody should expect that anyway - it's nothing new, certainly not for hard drive manufacturers).
From the Spec Sheet:
"One gigabyte, or GB, equals one billion bytes when referring to hard drive capacity."
That said, I'm a Seagate fan when it comes to hard drives. Lovely and quiet, and I've never had one fail yet (touch wood).

Re:Maybe per watt performance is the best but...
This is very relevant to me because my 4 year old laptop died Sunday. I now have a choice between Core Duo or Turion... what I really want is a 64 bit dual core laptop.
What an unfortunate time to have your laptop die! You know what you want (dual-core 64-bit), but it's not quite available yet. Performance previews aren't quite available either. Ugh.None of Merom/Conroe or AM2 can be purchased by users today, and Merom is late 2006 at the earliest...
Yes, Merom has apparently been delayed until Q4. I have more bad news, though. According to a March 29 DailyTech article, dual-core Turion 64 may be delayed until June:My best hope is gutting it out until May 9 when AMD introduces the Turion X2 on AM2 or S1. For a dual core 64 bit laptop from Intel the wait would be too long.

Before you completely eliminate Merom, note that Merom is pin-compatible with Yonah and will work with Intel's current 945PM/GM chipsets. Therefore, a Merom-upgradable notebook is available today, dual-core Turion 64 chipset and CPU is probably coming in June, and the Merom CPU is coming in October at the very earliest.
If you are considering the upgrade-to-Merom option, a cheap interim solution will soon be available. Celeron M processors based on the Core Solo core are now selling in Japan:

Re:typical...
1. The CAFE standards are very low considering what we could accomplish with current technology, for example a 157 mpg NON HYBRID that is going to be released in Germany for 13,000 dollars (U.S.)
http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=1000
2. The reason they "sell a lot of them," is they advertised the hell out of them and in "clever" ways to make pencil necked pointy haired bosses feel insecure about their masculinity if they didn't commute to work on perfectly flat pavement in a 4000 pound 4 wd truck that can do 120 mph when the speed limit is 70 tops. Yes tee vee advertising propaganda and group think do work for a while until it costs too much to be "cool." Then suddenly last years "cool" becomes "un cool" finally, thankfully a Prius is "cool." As we inch closer to peak oil and 3/gallon gas those German diesels will win and the big 3 will lose and that has nothing to do with unions and everything to do with short sighted marketing and design decisions. -

No I don't think so;

PricesAccording to this, the Athlon FX60 was released in Jan '06 at a price of US$1031, in 1000-unit quantities. The next FX-series chip (the 2.8GHz version) will probably debut around June, at somewhere near this price.
According to this, the 2.66 GHz Conroe will be released in Q3'06 at a price of US$530, in 1000-unit quantities.
With these prices, combined with the apparent performance and power differences (Conroe has a predicted TDP of 65W, compared to the FX60 at 110W), it looks to me like we'll finally see some heavy competition from Intel. Of course, a lot can happen between now and then - Intel have had manufacturing issues in the past, AMD have a new memory controller on the way and a 65nm die shrink due early next year, and can probably squeeze out two or even three speed bumps before Conroe really hits. Who knows, they might even drop their prices a bit.
Come Q3, I'll be sitting in the ringside seats with popcorn, ready to watch the fun

Re:Well
I want:
Why doesn't the Pentium M-based, previous-generation AOpen MiniPC fit your needs? It has component video out (no digital audio out, though) and is the same size as the Mac mini. Also, Intel supplies decent Linux drivers for this platform if you want to run MythTV. Barebones start at around $280-$300 with combo drive and without CPU, hard drive, memory, and wireless module.1. Component output. S-Video will do if there's no "tearing" during horizontal pans.
2. XBMC work-alike. I don't care about the scripting, MameoX, or XBOX games. I want to access any file MPlayerOSX/VLAN can handle over my home network. ...I want this to replace my aging XBMC center. MythTV is another option in a ShuttlePC case - but the form factor of the Mac Mini is unbeatable. If you want Core Duo/Solo support, Aopen announced an updated version last week.

Re:You mean the Mac Mini, right?
Daily Tech posted a preview of the AOpen MiniPC just today - it's their answer to the Mac Mini, and worth a quick look. Not sure I like the blue color, but like one of the comments says, there's always spray paint.

They are here !!
That's nice, good for AMD. But where are the FB-DIMMs?
What a coincidence that you ask that question now. I submitted a story yesterday to bring this article to the attention of the slashdot crowd "The Future of DDR Memory is Serial".
Guess what, the submission was rejected, and yet in the same day they let through a story about a self perpetuating miracle motor. Why do I even bother! -
Don't listen to those crazy Linux hippies
Bah, the screenshots clearly show that DailyTech is using Linux, they must be crazy.
On a serious note, however, how will this effect Xbox 360's, or would these custom ATI processors support it? -
Better Interview With #3 AMD Guy
Better interview with Henri Richard from AMD here instead:

The TGP interview is OK, but that guy is just a mouthpiece.
