Re:T-Mobile's Sidekick
The "gay" ringtones can be replaced by other downloadable ringtones.
They just released v2 of their SDK. Their development network is expected to be up RealSoonNow. Many users feel that an ssh client would be very useful; I'd expect an open one to be developed sometime this summer (my guess).
Read lots more about it here. Go to the forums.
I didn't even want a cel phone until this came out. But that functionality allowed me to tell AT&T to piss off. I'd say its not for the guy who is always on the phone, but AIM and email from most anywhere rocks. Until I lost it, I was using it with a Jabra Bluetooth headset. Solves the problem of feeling like you are talking into a bar of soap.
Now if I could just get it in a shoephone form factor... -
Re:I dunno, but maybe...
I have a Danger Hiptop / T-Mobile Sidekick and I don't think it's 5 years behind Japanese phones. It has a real keyboard, which is not as important in Japan, but is important here if you actually want to do e-mail or web searches or IM. Yes, it can do SMS if you can find one of the other 3 people in the US who can use it, but it also does AOL IM and thus you can talk to just about anybody. It's also $40/mo for unlimited data, plus more phone minutes that I can use (though if you yammer you will probably want to upgrade to the $60 plan).
Drawbacks: grayscale screen instead of color. Although it's done in Java, the SDK is not open -- blame Deutchse Telekom, though, not the US industry, for that one.
I think the device fares quite well compared to Japan's Java-enabled color phones, because it has a real keyboard and real applications that are useful. If I want to play Tetris in color, I'd get a game boy.
And yes, it has Beatnik 12-voice polyphonic ringtones that sound great.

Assuming OP has a Sidekick...
[...] how about backing up your phone to your pc so that when (not if...) your phone breaks you can restore the replacement phone to have the same phone#'s ans setup and other data?
Assuming the original poster is talking about the new Sidekick, 99% of all of the information is stored on the server, not your client device. Several people in a popular Sidekick forum have already mentioned that they put their SIM card into their replacment and all of the info is instantly there just as it was before.
have yet to see one that can... you can send your data to a web-page for editing, but it still costs money to transfer it, and you cant back-up phone settings...
The entire duration of the contract for the SideKick service (1 year) has unlimited data transfer. As to most of the other counterpoints in this thread, the SDK is coming soon...

Re:Does it do ssh?
Given that it lacks a "|" key, it'd be tricky to get some stuff done that way anyway
Use can still use a pipe "|" even if its not on the keyboard... Check the Danger Info Forums to see how. -
