And they are recruiting Network Engineers ...DANTE seems to be Recruiting some network engineers, but they don't mention Volcanos. Maybe is in the small print in the employee contract.
Cheers.

Too slow, too late?
Increase in internetworking is always welcome, especially in China and Russia, but there are projects such a Geant which already provide european countries with 10 Gb (and more) pipes.

Geant movie
The european research network (up to 10Gbit/s) has an infomercial at their webpage that is interesting, since all the applications and benefits discussed pretty much applies in the US as well.

Re:Whatever happened to MBONE?
Multicast keeps going. There are now many multicast connected IPV4 networks exchanging MBGP routes, but yes, very few networks multicast down to the end-user.
I've asked a few Internet2 people about multicast, and while the backbone certainly is, the "last mile" to users often is not.
I was recently working for a company that was delivering multicast webcasts from major streaming providers over satellite to ISPs. But most of us were laid off, I don't know what is going on now.
There are a few companies to help you get going with multicast such as Multicast Technologies. Also the GEANT network in Europe is multicast capable. And here is a list of active SDR listings, kind of a "tv guide" for multicast. -
More regions get connected
Looks like Abilene, the backbone for Internet2 will join Canada's CA*Net3 and Europe's GEANT as one of the fastest research networks on the planet
According to this page at Geante,
An important element of GÉANT is the development of connectivity with equivalent Research Networks in other world regions. Connectivity is being consolidated with the existing equivalents of GÉANT in North America (Abilene, CA*net) and in Asia-Pacific (SINET, KOREN, SingAREN) and developed further between Europe and the Asia-Pacific, North American, South American and Mediterranean regions
a bunch of extra regions get connected as well. -
This article isn't about Internet 2
The title Article In The Guardian On Internet2 is erroneous. The article is actually about Geant, "the new pan-European network serving more than 3,000 of the continent's academic and research institutions". Basically, Europes version of I2.

Re:It isn't a US govt scheme
Switzerland has been assigning Distinguised Names and LDAP entries, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, for every child born. They were among the first but more have joined them, check out National Directories
