Still available elsewhere
For the curious, the songs/artists are still available in other places like deezer: https://www.deezer.com/us/albu...

Streaming
You could also use streaming services instead of downloading. Most of them come with a mobile client that can be used in offline mode.
They do pay their artists fractions of a cent for each song listened to.To me, this kind of service is clearly the future. It's especially great to discover new music. If you listen to the same 100 tracks all the time, it's probably not cost-effective though.
Some sites I know:
http://www.deezer.com/ (no software necessary, can run in a browser, offline mode with chrome, apps for iPhone and Android)
http://www.spotify.com/ (never used, but they are well established in the market)iTunes can also do something similar but I don't know their offerings.

Re:A small correction
True. I have to say that I really don't care anymore about Pandora or other Internet radio stations after I found Deezer. The thing I liked about both Pandora and Last.fm was that I could listen songs freely which lead into a habit of skipping songs or creating a new radio station just to listen the song again. I think that many people used Pandora and Last.fm this way. Now with Deezer I have the freedom to play whatever songs whenever I like to, that's the way I like it, so there is no need for Pandora or Last.fm anymore for me. In addition now Deezer caters decent radio stations based on more or less on their own selection. Pandora's and Last.fm's idea about having smart radio stations wasn't bad, but having your own customized playlists allow more freedom to you and pre-selected radio stations offer better and more coherent content than any smart selection.

Re:I guess..
That's a fairly gross assumption on your behalf.
France, being french speaking, have their own unique music market, in addition to international markets.
In support of that, 90% of top-10 selling artists are french [SNEP/IFPI, 2001]I am splitting hairs though - the leading ISP here, Free.fr has a live music streaming service already - http://www.deezer.com - No cost, no restrictions. That's a pretty decent sweetner already.

Deezer
Isn't Deezer legal or what? Same concept, totally free, plenty of songs available, playlist function and everything you'd expect from an online music service.
What is it that I don't get?

Why bother downloading any more? There are now so many viable, free (ad supported) sites which let users listen to music from those big RIAA friendly record labels.
And that's even before we get to the ones of questionable legality like muxtape and projectplaylist Yet p2p sharing of music is still huge, youtube and its clones seems to have made a big difference in the amount of movie sharing via p2p, why haven't the music sites done the same?

MSN Music today?? DRM Servers?
I still listen to music for free, you insensitive clod!

Re:Something is Fishy
I'd like to add that http://www.deezer.com/ which is a Flash app keeps me logged on even if I deleted all cookies.

EMI! Those wankers!

Re:wow
Personally, I like it and it didn't cost me anything. Plus, the fact that they got some record companies to agree to -anything- is great. Maybe they'll keep continuing to gain some sense.
You might consider Deezer.com as well. No ads, instant download, decent selection. I like it! -
This is nothing new
there are other sites that have been doing this for quite a while (i.e. http://www.deezer.com/) and it doesn't change a thing about how the RIAA feels because without violating the user agreement you can not download only listen.

Re:Just like the VCR killed Hollywood.
And throwing up your mp3s on the band web site is trivial when you're a local hit and expecting a couple thousand downloads; it's not quite the same when you're hoping for millions of downloads.
I guess you haven't heard of Bit Torrent which does a remarkably effective job of scaling to massive sizes without linear increases in bandwidth usage? Yes, that big, oppressive black thing is the rock you've been hiding under - get out!
At one point, suprnova.org related traffic accounted for something like 40% of all the traffic on the Internet. Yes, 40%, internationally. You can be quite certain that they had nowhere near that kind of hosting capacity directly...
Up to the connection/process limits of the server, BitTorrent allows you to serve 1000 clients with virtually no increase in total bandwidth usage over serving maybe 2-5 clients with HTTP.
No, it's not quite the same as Deezer's "on demand" music system but it still allows for massive distribution of material at minimal cost. -

Re:So where is the money coming from?
Our concept is simple:
-Give consumers a full and free access to all their favourite songs
-Pay artists and their producers through a revenue share based on our advertising revenues
- Help discovering new artists through a wide audience
