Re:gmail & Spam
I used my Gmail account to sign up for the iPod pyramid, as well as a few other places, and have since been getting a lot of spam. The Gmail spam filter picks up about 90% of it.
However, it also picks up 2-3 mailing list messages every day. (I'm subscribed to debian-user, BugTraq, and some others.) It has yet to pick up a single personal message, but I don't get many of those in my Gmail box.
Overall, Gmail has the best spam filter I've seen that just works out of the box.

Re:The Sad Black Box.
You have the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty. However, this is only in respect to the government, as you have no choice over what it does.
When it comes to your insurance company, you have entered into that relationship voluntarily.

OT: I already have all the FreeIpods referrals that I need, but I'm running a FreeIpods.com link pool.
Also, there are now FreeDesktopPC.com and FreeFlatScreens.com -
Clever spywareI found some really clever spyware on a co-worker's computer. It's pretty evil, but I was impressed.
- It inserts sponsored links into Google search results
- It blocks all major anti-spyware sites by adding entries to the hosts file. This was especially bad because Ad-Aware, when unable to hit the updates site, just says "Complete" instead of returning an error.
- I'm pretty sure that it was installed via an IE exploit.
- Find HijackThis via a third-party site.
- Close all Internet Explorer windows.
- Run Hijackthis. Remove the hosts file entries, the browser objects, and the startup entries.
- Download Ad-Aware and run a full system scan.

Not mentioned yet...A few programs I haven't seen mentioned yet:
- Total Commander -- previously known as Windows Commander. A file manager. (and here's how I set it up)
- Proxomitron - HTTP proxy with regex support
- Bandwidth Monitor Pro - lets me set up a transparent bandwidth graph in a screen corner that really doesn't interfere with anything else (replaced DUMeter on all my systems)
- ParaWin - provides additional keyboard layouts
- SQLyog - although it has plenty of issues, this is still the best MySQL front-end that I've found to date
- Opera Browser - still the fastest and most convenient for me
Thunderbird, Mozilla, PuTTY, EditPlus, Winamp

Re:WTF?I can't see any reason to store IP addresses this way, though. Maybe someone from the Slash development team could elaborate on this.
Since I also run a submission-based website, I would imagine that the IP addresses are stored to make it easy to clean up after a spam flood. My site, however, deletes the IP address from the database as soon as the submission is approved or rejected. I agree, however, that hashing the IP address is a waste of time, for the reasons already stated by another poster (easy to reverse).

A few experiences...One of the reasons I went with NIC.cx and got my
.cx domain is that they don't publicize your personal information without you allowing it. (That policy has been changed now, don't bother.)Also, when I found the exploit in MBNA's online credit card application system, it is precisely this information (I also own a
.org and a .com domain) they used to contact me and threaten me in several ways.

Slightly off-topic...Hmm... Windows, web server, Microsoft... close enough.
