Registrar with free DNS slaving and IPv6 glue?
I've used Domain Monger for years out of simple inertia. One of their features that I love is that I can set their DNS servers to slave off my self-hosted master server. I can make changes locally by editing my zone files, running rndc reload which sends NOTIFYs to their servers, and have the changes live on the Internet a few seconds later. I really, really don't want to give that up.
The problem is that Domain Monger is more expensive than other registrars, they're relatively tiny (will they be around 5 years from now? I don't know), and they don't support IPv6 glue records. I've asked Name.com's tech support and they don't support slave DNS. gkg.net offered to do it for "just" $25/year, which is way more than I pay for the domains themselves through Domain Monger. I haven't found a definitive answer yet for Namecheap.com. Does anyone know of a good registrar with decent prices, IPv6 glue support, and slave DNS?

Re:is there any decent non "evil"registrar out the
I have alway had good luck with Domainmonger. Funny name, but reasonable prices, and a rather powerful DNS control panel (which is free with the domain purchase). But, you can easily point your domain to your own NS records if you so choose. Been with them for 7 years, never had a problem.

Re:its actually pretty commonThere are horror stories for every registrar, but GoDaddy is in my opinion one of the best of the cheap ones.
I've used Domain Monger for years because of their domain ownership vs. domain rental policy. A while back, a lot of registrar contracts gave ownership of registered domains to the registrar themselves and then you just rented from them. I don't know whether that's still common or not, but anyway...
One time I screwed up on the billing form and accidentally renewed one domain for 5 years instead of 5 domains for 1 year. When I called Domain Monger, I got a real living human on the phone who fixed the problem before the call was over. That's the only time I've ever had to use their customer service, but it sure was a pleasant change from Network Solutions (corporate motto: "we're the Internet company; we don't have to care!").

Re:Vs. NetSol
but they're stable as hell.
...in the Debian sense of "updates roll out every few years". God help you if you need to update your DNS entries in less than a month. That's the reason I left them: their stability was more than I could stand.
Oh, and I still use Domainmonger. Their terms of service were good at the time, and while their prices aren't great (I really need to take another look at that), I've had nothing but good experiences with them. Once I accidentally renewed one domain for three years instead of three domains for one year, and one phone call to a live person later, my mistake was fixed. I never, ever, not once, resolved a problem with Network Solutions with a single phone call.

Re:Godaddy sucks
I've had good luck with both Misk.com (formerly RegisterSite) and Domainmonger. Never have they tried to screw me, or do anything that made me suspect they were anything other than aboveboard. (Well except for Domainmonger's goofy fish logo...)

I have had good experience with Domain MongerI have had good experience with Domain Monger, although I only use them for miscellaneous domains. The only time I had a problem with a registration their customer service fixed it within 24 hours from a single e-mail. YMMV

Re:Too little too late
try domain monger. They rock. No relation; I discovered them here on Slashdot via an Ask Slashdot forum.
-
Re:Advice on switching to another registrarI've been using Domain Monger for a couple of years now. In short, they rock. All management is via a web interface and updates are instantaneous - in comparison to Netsol's "send us an email, then send another one two weeks later if we haven't acted yet" complacency.
One time I accidentally renewed the wrong domain; I had about 10, and one was getting ready to expire, but I selected the wrong one. I sent exactly one email to their support desk explaining what I meant to do versus what I actually did. I had a response back within the hour telling me that the problem was corrected.
I'm sure there are other good registrars out there, but Domain Monger has my business. They rock.

Re:Blogs, who need em?
domainmonger is only $17 per year, including dns hosting.

Just transfered from VeriSign
I have just finished a month long battle with VeriSign to get access to a domain. I would fax them an authorization letter, they would email me back saying I missed the coma on the 21st page after the statment of intent blah blah. I finally got everything to their liking but they didn't respond for a couple more weeks. So I headed over to domainmonger and did a transfer, and was up and running in a day and a half.
I can kind of understand why a larger company would like to know that someone has to jump through major hoops before someone can hijack their domain, but for me all there security was a major pain in the ass. Plus, the last time I checked, they were using some ibm ssl software that doesn't let you use mozilla to manage your account. I am going to plug domainmonger here, I have no affiliation with them, I am just a happy customer.
domainmonger.com
I have had such good luck with domainmonger, they are not a large operation, but I have never had trouble getting ahold of someone if I have had a problem.

posting makes you feel goooooodd. -
Re:OpenSRS?
Here are the big players in OpenSRS
T3Link
Domain Monger
000domains
There are a lot of them, but I suggestion going with one of the above! -
Re:Switch To OpenSRS
I use Domainmonger for all of my personal and business domains. I absolutely love their service. If there is any kind of problem with a transfer, *they will call YOU* to straighten it out before you even know something is wrong. I also like the way you can
apply one set of changes (like contact info) a bunch of domains at once. -
Switch To OpenSRS
OpenSRS resellers have a super-easy set of password-protected web forms for updating all of your info. The cool thing is, if for some reason your reseller goes out of business (imagine that!), you can still do maintenance through opensrs.org.
Two that I like and have used are
Domainmonger
and 000domains
Plus, the price is usually cheap ($13-17 per year).
It's easy to switch from NSI/Verisign to these guys. The instructions are on the sites. -
Re:This is Arrogance!
No problems transfering one to some months ago.

List of OpenSRS resellers
Someone above asked for a List of OpenSRS affiliates (i.e. resellers). I have been trying to do the same, but never could get such a list, despite extensive searches.
Note that the Domain Name Buyers Guide does not cover any OpenSRS affiliate yet.
Last week, I decided to ask OpenSRS themselves, and opened a sales ticket and a support ticket. The support guy gave me the usual run around ("Our reseller list is confidential", "we cannot release such info", "try a web search").
The sales person was more helpful and gave me a list of five resellers:
- http://internationalwebhostingservices.c om
- http://www.islelink.com
Independantly, I tried searching for such info myself. Here is what I found:
- JumpDomain 14.99$ a year.
- DiscountDomainRegistry 14.99$ a year.
- DomainMonger 17$ a year.
- Processing Innovations 15$ a year. I am not sure if they are OpenSRS or not. Some (see above) have objected to their agreement, since they can terminate the domain,
...etc. - Domains JH Cloos
- . Again not sure if he is OpenSRS or not. He offers domains for 12.50$. You cannot pay by credit card and need
- e-gold.
In case you are wondering, if your reseller goes out of business (many of them are small operations or a one-man-shows), then OpenSRS will be the registrar. The sales person told me they would help me find another registrar should this happen.
I am willing to maintain a list of OpenSRS resllers that offer cheap (20$ or less per year) domain registrations. If you find more, please let me know. You can contact me via the web site above or via 2bits.com (fill a contact form) or you can e-mail me at khalidATbaheyeldinDOTcom.
As a related issue, I have been looking for a PHP port of the OpenSRS library (Yeah, I am a Perl-Hater!), so I can implement it myself, shell out the 250$ minimum needed for being an Open SRS reseller, then I can provide domain registry for friends, family and clients. However, there is no such port planned by OpenSRS.org, and one reseller (forget which one) has a library that is working in every aspect except the encryption stuff.

DomainMonger.com
Domainmonger is pretty cheap at $17/year. As a bonus it doesn't have any "we own you" b.s. in their terms of service.

How to transfer your registrar
Was wondering if its possible to change registrars and noticed that Domain Monger is willing to do it for you. Looks like you should do it well in advance of the domain expiring, it appears as if the previous registrar may be able to reject the transfer if the account is being reserved for renewal.
Its indicated that not all domains are transferable, hmmmm, no details. -
Re:thanks! you guys are great NSI
And how is DomainMonger, other then price, any better then NSI....
From their service agreement:
15. REVOCATION. You agree that we may delete your domain name or terminate your right to use other Services if the information that you provided to register or reserve your domain name or register for other Services, or subsequently to modify it, contains false or misleading information, or conceals or omits any information we would likely consider material to our decision to register or reserve your domain name. You agree that we may, in our sole discretion, delete or transfer your domain name at any time.
Note that last line. -
thanks! you guys are great NSI
Thanks NSI! I can't tell you how much fun I had dealing with your ongoing garbage for the past 3 years! And to think my company has registered over 1000 domains with you guys for our customers over the past 5 years!
In using Tucows OpenSRS we have had extreme reliability, durability, speed, and low prices. Any ISP who hasn't implemented this service yet doesn't know what they are missing... Only $10/year per domain.
And for all you end users out there, don't miss out Domain Monger, who implement OpenSRS, and only charge $17/year.
NSI... How are you still a company?

$17 registration (and free DNS parking to boot!)
How about DomainMonger.com? They charge $17 for one year, and the rates decrease if you register for multiple years at a time. They offer free DNS parking and do not charge fees for ownership transfers. Plus they don't retain any right to take your domain from you in the future. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

Re:OpenSRS
The OpenSRS affiliate I use is www.domainmonger.com. They cost $17 per year, but if you buy more years, the price declines. I have been very happy with what they do and how their site works. It's very simple, but it allows you to get a domain quickly and cheaply.
Note: OpenSRS domains take about 2 days to propagate through to whois and other registrars. If you think it isn't working, just give it one more day. It has never failed for me. -
thanks! i just registered a domain with themi've been trying to find a good registrar to register my personal domain, and after checking joker.com, valueweb.net and opensrs and domainmonger.com, i took the plunge and registered with domainmonger.
registration was simple and took less than 2 minutes. the price was the thing that did it though. i almost registered with nsi last year, but i hated the thought of paying 70 bucks and cancelled the next day
so do check domainmonger.com out, it worked for me
btw i do not work for them so i am not some shill for the company

DomainMonger.com is the best!I can't believe people are still willing to pay the full price to companies like NSI and register.com, when you can pay half the price elsewhere!
Take a look at DomainMonger.com. They offer better service than NSI and register.com, but they cost only $17 to register a domain. That's right, $17 to register a domain, with no other fees. And unlike Joker and Dotster you don't have to pay for transfers, and they guarantee that they won't raise the price in the future when you have to renew your domain.
Not only that, DomainMonger.com has a cool web-based management interface that allows you to make modifications to multiple domains at one time. The manangment system uses newer and better technology, unlike other registrars who are tied to the badly implemented systems that were put in place years ago.. Check them out!
