Ceren, be my valentine!
Is it any wonder people think Linux users are a bunch of flaming homosexuals when its fronted by obviously gay losers like these?! BSD has a mascot who leaves us in no doubt that this is the OS for real men! If Linux had more hot chicks and gorgeous babes then maybe it would be able to compete with BSD! Hell this girl should be a model!
Linux is a joke as long as it continues to lack sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. I mean are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?! Wouldn't this just make your Christmas?! Yes doctor, this uber babe definitely gets my pulse racing! Oh how I envy the lucky girl in this shot! Linux has nothing that can possibly compete. Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Wouldn't this be more liklely to influence your choice of OS?
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Don't you wish you could get one of these? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!

There is hope here!
My friends, I know we all want Open Source to succeed. However, it has come to my attention that the amount of attention being lavished on Linux by the community at the expense of BSD ignores one key advantage that the vernerable OS from Berkeley has over everyone's favourite from Finland.
How can people say BSD is dying when it has a mascot like this?! Linux needs to get its act together if it's going to compete with the kind of hot chicks and gorgeous babes that BSD has to offer!
How can you take Linux seriously when its fronted by losers like these?! Would you buy software from them? Would you even walk on the same side of the street as them?! I don't think so! You Linux groupies need to find some sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! Re:"The Bauhaus school of software design"
Everyone hates mixing metaphors like this, but I'm inclined to disagree. *Following the death of* all the other cool things that used to be out there, FreeBSD is left standing as the *closest thing* to a "Bauhaus" distribution. (NetBSD beats it in a few respects, but that's another story/debate; FreeBSD's mission is in part taking the 'experimental' stuff from, say, NetBSD, and incorporating it into a 'stable' codebase, but that's overshadowed by the usual politics and differences of opinion you get between open-source projects.)
The thing is, when you've rubbed against it long enough, you begin to realize it's less "Bauhausian" than... hm, "Modernist?" The team works hard to ensure a tight and integrated whole, but at the end of the day, this means they haven't made certain concessions to the way people actually tend to work. Things like the integration of BIND and Sendmail, for instance, or the way Ports demands the tracking of a centralized tree. (It's nice to have everyone in one boat - and in fact, makes some support tasks rather easier - but when that boat includes a broken dependency-tangle around gettext, as just happened... ;))
Meanwhile... Not to disparage anyone @FreeBSD.org - I use it on my desktop, it's more than worth putting up with, especially with so little 'competition' left in OSes, and many in the project do see the issues and try to inject sanity where they can - well, uh, yeah, I'm one of those who can and will ramble at length about DragonFly (which, of course, Isn't Done Yet, so don't get your hopes up just yet)...
The difference, to me, is like that between Frank Lloyd Wright and Buckminster Fuller. Both produced designs that *looked* edgy and modern in their own ways, but Frankie's stuff was somewhat expensive, 'custom,' and high-maintenance behind the facades. Bucky, on the other hand, understood the value in making things *reproducible,* so we could actually reap a (repeated) benefit and get on with our lives.
(Don't take that harshly. It's still better to live in Falling Water than a trailer-park built on a toxic-waste site.)
I'm sure someone wishes I'd weave Linux into this, but I'll defer to the "Linux is an ecology" point of view and say the quality of the experience there depends on your particular seed and fertilizer. (Baobabs are said to make good homes, but it takes a fair bit of time, luck and effort to raise one in the shape you'd want.) -
Re: you want to make buildworld FIRST!!Right. buildworld, buildkernel, installkernel, installworld. DFly maintains pretty good compatibility with FBsd-4.x binaries (but not 5.x! It's dynamic root will blow up on you if you try this from 5.x!).
Once world is installed do a 'make upgrade' to unconditionally copy files that sysops are not supposed to modify, like
/etc/rc* and /etc/rc.d/*. Do this before doing the mergemaster, it will make the remaining merge a lot easier and also get rid of a ton of 4.x junk files that are either no longer used or have been moved in DFly. Hmm, you might have to wipe (rm -rf ) your /usr/include and 'make includes' to generate a new set to get rid of old 4.x junk files in the include dir too. You will want to install new boot blocks as well, though this is not required. DFly has backported 5.x's new boot loader which is a whole lot better then 4.x's, and you get some spiffy ascii art too.Really the best thing to do is to download and burn the DragonFly Live CD ISO, boot your machine from the CD, and follow the README file to completely wipe and reload your box with DFly. Obviously make a backup of your old system first
:-). If you just want to play with DFly without messing up your HD, you can boot the CD and play around a little from there (keeping in mind that /tmp and /var and /etc are MFS volumes). The CD boots into a fully operational environment.-Matt

Re:wow
If you're asking about the OS, it's pretty good. The troll below was thinking of OpenBSD -- and a bit off the mark -- but basically, think OpenBSD without the security focus, with the conveniences of FreeBSD (sometimes done better; pkgsrc is rather sweet, and claims to handle builds on Linux as well!), relatively small installation size, cutting-edge features, and of course, ridiculous portability. Definitely Just The Thing for that 486DX2-50 collecting dust (unless it's to be a firewall or bastion host - then you want OpenBSD), and quite useful anywhere else as well.
If you're planning an 'intensive' workload (more specifically, "if you're planning something that will actually put stress on a $2,000+ server"), then FreeBSD and soon DragonFly will be worth looking into. (DragonFly will be cool for other reasons, but then, I'm a fanboy.)
As to this logo business... Well, in a perfect world, people would use BSDs more often, and accept any lingering 'incorrectness' to the logo (it's supposed to be a daemon, not a demon, so the saying goes) as the price paid for getting a great, maintainable, don't-even-have-to-follow-GPL-sharealike-rules OS. But pragmatically, a lot of NetBSD core seems to work for Wasabi Systems -- call them the RedHat of NetBSD, but of course, the overall NetBSD community doesn't quite have the size and clout of the 'Linux community,' so keeping those guys fed is more intrinsic to the project's survival in the near term. If the logo's losing them contracts (and what's worse than losing a contract for nontechnical reasons?), then hey, maybe it's time for the weird to turn pro. -
Re:Depot begat Stow, who begat Pkgview?
May as well note that DragonFly is going to attempt something similar, but with an alternate grade of 'hack quality' -- the intention in DragonFly is to allow filesystem overlays (union mounts on crack?) such that packages can be totally "convinced" that they're the only version of themselves installed.
It's hard to say (meaning, I haven't done my research) if DBSD's revisiting of the issue inspired the cleanup and release of pkgviews, or if that was proceeding quietly before Dillon-and-friends even thought to begin their stab.
Either way, this looks like a good year for package management on *BSD. Sorry, RPM users. ;) -

There are some other interesting things about clams.
And don't forget dragonflies, I think you can trust them, as they're related to daemons (not demons...I hope). -
Re:Variant symlinks are really coolYou are right of course. I don't use varsyms yet, but I had a look at the code and that confirms what you said. Not much documentation yet, but the varsym tool has a manual page. It works like you expect. One sets a variable with varsym, and then you can use that variable (with ${} notation) in symlinks. Example:
> cat > file-file1
this is file 1
^D
> cat > file-file2
this is file 2
^D
> ln -s 'file-${foo}' test
> varsym foo=file1
> cat test
this is file 1
> varsym foo=file2
> cat test
this is file 2Of course, varsym defaults to user context, which means that the var is only 'visible' to the user. With the -s flag, the var becomes system wide, and you can also restrict the view to the process.
There isn't much more to it. It's easy, clean and simple

Its still chugging along, but you can see for yourself.

Re:fork
It's going, it's healthy, give them at least a few more months before you can expect a "consumer"-ready release. (Or even a "consumer"-ready preview. Doing a far-reaching overhaul of the FreeBSD kernel is 'easy,' especially since the work is about getting rid of stupid ways for things to break. Adding the userland sugar - the new installer, package/port management features, etc - will take a little more time, as human interfaces are naturally tricky to get right.)
Obviously, if you're familiar with the BSDs already, you can run with what they've got now. Follow the action over here, read the Slashnet Q&A, and dive in on the newsgroups or mailing lists (messages are mirrored between mail and news) if you're ready to help out! -
Firefly vs Dragonfly

Re:Why Dragonfly?DragonFly's first official release will be in a little less then a year. Half of that time is going to be spent rewriting the infrastructure, which is outlined on the site www.dragonflybsd.org We already have light weight threads and our slab allocator in place (which are a biggies) and the basic infrastructure for syscall messaging and DEV messaging in place. We are also steadily bringing in those elements from FreeBSD-5.x that make sense. At the moment my focus is on fixing inherited bugs and rewriting the namecache code. Other DragonFly developers are focused on syscall sepraration, networking, and userland bits. We are being very, very careful to preserve and improve upon the stability inherent in earlier 4.x releases. In fact, the namecache stage-3 work has been delayed over two weeks now while I have backed up and refocused on fixing a number of unrelated bugs.
The biggest topic on our lists right now is the discussion on the infrastructure required to support a good binary and source-based package management system. FreeBSD's package management system currently suffers greatly from bitrot and upgrade-breakage (where upgrading one package breaks half a dozen others), amoung other problems. We are discussing the use of variant symlinks and VFS-based 'environments' for deploying and validating port dependancies in a manner that allows multiple versions of anything to coexist on the same system.
Basically you can think of DragonFly as being all the things I've always wanted to do but couldn't due to politics in the FreeBSD camp. FreeBSD-5 has gone down a road that I believe will lead to a slow, cumbersome, and unmaintainable result. There are plenty of examples of this but the most aggregious is thread preemption in the kernel, preemptive thread movement between cpus (also while in the kernel), and a ridiculously complex API for various types of mutex operations. There are good things in FreeBSD-5, and we will snarf them as appropriate.
The timing is appropriate. FreeBSD-4.x is nearing its end-of-life, and it is obvious that less care is being taken in preserving its vaunted stability then in the past. DragonFly will be the logical successor to FreeBSD-4.x statring in around a year, and I also fully expect to beat the shit out of FreeBSD-5 SMP-performance-wise by the time too.
DragonFly's kernel model is basically to operate on cpus in isolation, with movement beween cpus strictly managed. For example, there is a separate light weight kernel scheduler on each cpu which handles all operations related to that cpu and requires the use of no mutexes. The slab allocator is also per-cpu and mutexless. If an operation needs to work on a data structure owned by another cpu an asynchronous IPI (message) is sent to that cpu rather then performing a locking/mutex operation. For example, if cpu #1 needs to free data owned by cpu #2's slab allocator, cpu #1 queues the work to cpu #2 (and in the case of a memory free, the work does not have to be done immediately). The term 'asynchronous' is important in this context, because it means that the IPI latency between cpus can be entirely absorbed and that sequences of messages (in more heavily loaded systems) can be processed in a tight loop. When we get into more complex entities such as the networking stack, the intention is to run the protocol stacks as threads (possibly multiple threads, one on each cpu or as needed by the situation) and assign protocol control blocks to particular threads on particular cpus. This eliminates nearly all locking and mutex operations related to any given protocol control block and guarentees cache locality of reference. If done properly the individual cpu caches on SMP systems will wind up with less duplication and far higher efficiencies then one gets using a fine-grained locking mutex model. In fact, DragonFly's model works equally well in both UP and SMP environments and we expect the SMP support will cause virtually no loss in performance on UP boxes.

Re:focus
As far as I know... and I have been following the list as well as reading the website... I see no plans to rely on fine-grained locking as an SMP enabling mechanism. There is an AmigaOS based messaging system that will allow people to run things like Filesystem drivers in userland should they choose to or they can keep it in ther kernel.
But why are you reading /. comments to find out what this thing is? Go to the website and see for yourself.

[I am a subject]
Now, I realize that *BSD is growing less and less popular, but I truly must say that it has always impressed me as being a good system.
I adminster a handful of OpenBSD servers, and they really are a joy to work on; they give me far fewer headaches than any of the Linux distros our clients use. Sure, there are things that frustrate me (especially lack of SMP), but for mission critial applications, I rarely use anything other than OpenBSD.
Also, if *BSD is dying, why did DragonflyBSD only start development back in June?
Maybe I'm an optimist, but I like something to actually work when I need it. (Maybe that explains why I drive a '91 Volvo station wagon) -
Re:Please, DO NOT support them
You must not have spent much time reading LKML (Linux Kernel Mailing List). It's hardly populated by paragons of politeness (from Linus on down). That's hardly a surprise -- they are there to conduct the serious business of building and enhancing the Linux kernel, and naive questions draw dismissive responses if they are answered at all. So why are people so surprised at the responses they get when they post inappropriately to the equivalent FreeBSD lists?
I've seen it happen again aand again: someone posts an inappropriate question to freebsd-stable, freebsd-current, or some other technical list, and after a few private suggestions to take it to freebsd-questions or freebsd-chat persists in posting. It's usually only then that one of the heavy hitters decides to knock him out of the ring...
As for Matt Dillion, he was given a choice: play by the rules, or leave. He chose the latter. It's no secret that he didn't agree with some of the choices made in FreeBSD 5 development, so it's a good thing that he's decided to channel his considerable talents into creating his own distribution based on FreeBSD 4. Nonetheless, he still is on cordial terms with many of the FreeBSD developers, still runs FreeBSD on many of his machines, still makes bug reports and suggests patches, and so on.
In other words, he shows a lot more class and maturity than guys like you who, sore after some imagined slight, take anonymous pot-shots from the sidelines.
