VapoorizeReading the following excerpt of the mindfully.com article, I was intrigued at how this thermal depolymerization process was invented. It reminded me so much of how VaPOOrize was invented (go ahead, follow that Dreamworks link, it's funny, plus Dreamworks supports MPAA anyway, so slashdotting it does a body good):
That's the challenge that Baskis, a microbiologist and inventor who lives in Rantoul, Illinois, confronted in. the late 1980s. He says he "had a flash" of insight about how to improve the basic ideas behind another inventor's waste-reforming process. "The prototype I saw produced a heavy, burned oil," recalls Baskis. "I drew up an improvement and filed the first patents." He spent the early 1990s wooing investors and, in 1996, met Appel, a former commodities trader. "I saw what this could be and took over the patents," says Appel, who formed a partnership with the Gas Technology Institute and had a demonstration plant up and running by 1999.
So where does all this offal go? It just disappears, "up and out" like magic? Put in s#$t in and out comes sweet nectar of the gods. Sounds too good to be true if you ask me---unless there's a bioprocess in there somewhere or a collection of energy from solar or geothermal heat or something along those lines, the amount of energy put in to do this TDP thing sounds too costly (think "Conservation of Energy").

Re:Pathetically stupid web designers!
Offtopic: I haven't looked at the Firefly web page, but you definitely should grab the "Ghost in the shell 2" trailer.

Re:Mitnick Speaks In Third Person
Reminds me of the movie, "Catch me if You Can" (based on a true story). I thought it would be a horrible movie because of Leonardo DeCaprio, but his acting was great. Tom Hanks was not slouch either.
Anyways, the basic plot of the movie is that Leo is the world's most infamous check counterfeiter. Eventually he turns over to the "good guys" and joins Tom Hanks at the end of the movie. Today he provides most of the security to checks.

Re:1975 - The year I consulted for Magnusson-MossWow, an Israeli consultant, a National Weather Service researcher, the professor of a nonexitent college and a corporate lawyer -- all in the same day! I, sir, am quite impressed.
You might just be able to pull of the next Frank Abagnale, Jr.!

Re:Both sides of the storyLets say there is a master thief, the real-world equivalent of what we see in so many movies (Entraptment, Ocean's 11, The Saint, &c). This individual is caught and convicted, _serves their time_, and is let back out into the world.
You are not describing a hypothetical case here.
This is not the first time someone spent their youth frantically committing fraud, then later became a respected consultant in the field. Frank Abagnale was a notorious document forger, whose exploits were documented (sort of) in a recent film .
I would give Mr. Mitnick the same benefit of the doubt that the many-times-felon Abagnale has been given over the last three decades,
Yes, it isn't fair that someone can later make money from the same skills and knowledge they used to commit infamous crimes. Its also not fair that incompetents get hired and promoted based on old fraternity ties, or on marriage to the head boss' niece.
At least the convicted Mitnick and Abagnale can demonstrate a high level of skill required for their current enterprises.

The competition
For those who didn't watch: Ice Age, Lilo & Stitch, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and Treasure Planet.
I can only claim to have seen two of these, but I think I can say that "Lilo & Stitch" was the only worthwhile competition in this category. Still, it should rightly be considered remarkable that a dubbed foreign film won in this category, especially since Disney put almost no effort into promoting this film when it was released.
And on that note, it looks like Miyazaki's film "Castle in the Sky" will be released in the US on DVD at the same time as "Spirited Away", both of which should get a lot more attention from Disney now than they did last calendar year. Hey, whatever works.... -

Understanding Geeks"And Hemos and I get cameos!"
This explains why Katz is still around, I guess.Furthermore, this proves that Katz understands Geeks the same way that Speilberg, Geffen and Katzenberg did when they acquired both Bill Gates as well as Paul Allen as partners.
Reports of Bill Gates' behavior in the presence of Speilberg, Geffen and Katzenberg is that he shifts from a "hard drive" alpha geek into a beta geek.
Amazing, the enormous sociosexual status acquired by hiring some blonde whores and selling them back to their home towns on a silver screen.
