Re:There's no fucking way
Popularity in google doesn't necessarily mean sales.
According to dvd empire and Eproducwars blu-ray is currently outselling hd-dvd, an effect widely attributed to Ps3 owners buying HD movies. The average blu-ray movie costs less than hd-dvd in amazon as well.
Here's Debbie does dallas in blu-ray, porn in 1080p and multiple angles.
In a objective comparison, both formats are about the same(excluding player costs which will eventually be similar), except for future catalog:

Re:It's not about the format
"Everyone knows that DVD has enough capacity to store the same content using H.264 as BD using MPEG-2."
What does this even mean? H.264 is MPEG-4, not MPEG-2. And if you were putting HD video on a standard DVD, there'd be no need for BD at all. And yeah, you can fit HD content on a DVD using MPEG-4 or MPEG-2 or VC-1 or any other codec under the sun, but at that point you're talking about bitrates roughly equivalent to broadcast HD, which is riddled with compression artifacts (particularly noticeable on the large displays favored by home theater types, who are the core market for Blu-ray and HD DVD at this stage). Even high-def VC-1 looks pretty ropey when compressed to fit on a standard DVD, as you can see by looking at any of the myriad WMVHD discs out there. And this is without factoring in the next-gen audio codecs (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD), which also require more space to get any real benefit. -
Despite the Spoiler, I Just Bought the Movie
I didn't watch Firefly when it aired on Fox. I just wasn't hooked by their commercials, and it didn't come on with regular frequency.
Based on fanboy comments and movie reviews, I purchased the series on DVD a few months ago. I now like the series very much. And even though someone thoughlessly revealed spoilous (sp?) info, I've just purchase Serenity from http://dvdempire.com/. I look forward to watching it.

Re:36 titles at risk!
Maybe thats Amazon's fault more than the format's. Check DVDEmpire's DVD-Audio Section here: http://www.dvdempire.com/index.asp?userid=9936425

Thing is if you do a search for "The Grouch" DVDA on any torrent search engine, you can find an already cracked release of 'Cell Six: My Baddest B*tches' It's 3.06GB and has both MLP/LPCM5.1 and DolbyDigital 5.1 audio and 2 videos.
If I can, I buy DVD-Audio releases because I for one realize that media formats don't just take off by themselves. The quality of sound with DVD-A is astounding, especially at very high volumes. -
What's Holding UMD Back

Ho hum...
... I'm pleased with the AAC support and the iPod update (maybe even LONGER battery life than 1.2.6), but this freshening isn't terribly innovative or interesting..
Music service? Hmm. There needs to be a 'grab bag' discount, an Audible-style subscription (20 tracks/mo for $10 is about right), et al.
Perhaps the new docking station is step 1 in the ongoing struggle in audio integration, eventually leading to a Car CD changer emulator.
And someday, a video iPod. Who needs a remote control if you have a touchscreen? DVD menus are designed for use on PCs anyway, sometimes abominably so, and worst case you can put a T68-style joystick on it.. -
Re:Dissapointed That This is Non-Theatre
The first mini-series has been released in a 2 DVD set. Just check your local video store or your favorite online retailer *cough* DVD Empire *cough*
;) Always go for the wide screen directors cut.

Re:[OT] Lord of the Rings
Shrug, the problem isn't with their video encoding method, the problem is with the numerous audio tracks packed along-- had they left only the bare minimum in audio tracks (and subsequently offered a seperate DTS release) the whole damn thing would have likely fit. Hell, here's what I got from DVD Empire for an audio track listing--
Audio:
ENGLISH: Dolby Digital 5.1 [CC]
ENGLISH: DTS 5.1 [CC]
FRENCH: Dolby Digital 5.1
So, they included the DTS version of the audio and the FRENCH version of the DD 5.1 audio.. both of which could have easily been dropped in favor of 1) a seperate DTS release (other DVDs do this, why not this one?) and 2) a seperate French release for Canadians that might be buying it.
I haven't done the math, but I'm willing to guess that with those dropped, the other discs content might have fitted (that and a less liberal use of bitrate). Dual sided would have made more sense, I agree, but when you can fit 4 hours of high quality video on a single-sided dual layer DVD, it makes no sense to span sides OR discs... -
WB screwed the aspect ratio on the DVD edition
i'm not sure if anyone will care enough to mod this up, but AOL/TimeWarner screwed up the DVD version of this in their buyout/re-release of it from the older MGM edition. the new edition is 1.85:1 aspect ratio, as compared to the older, original 2.35:1 aspect ration. Intrepid fans may want to search your local used movie dealer....
