Re:Forward successful download stats to originator
The tracker already has all of this data. It has a count of how many people have completed as well as how many people are incomplete and how much they have left to go. (Like this, a CGI script that just reads the tracker's state file.) In fact, there's even a stats generator that makes pretty graphs out of it all. We're working on getting the UI elements to display these stats integrated into the core (example), but for now there are patches that do it. (Shameless plug.) To top it all off, the tracker generates log files that are plain old HTTP logs, and are parseable by pretty much any web stats generator.
If AOLTW/WB/etc ran their own tracker they'd have all the stats they needed. If you upload a torrent to a 3rd-party site and are the initial seed and want to see the stats, pretty much all of them nowadays let you at least see how many total downloads there have been. It's not an issue. -

Tracker
Seems to me, all you have to do is go after the tracker server listed in the
.torrent URL. The tracker server is the centralized server that all hosts using a .torrent file must connect to in order to find the end-content.
Here is a sample from one of the Matrix 2 .torrent files at suprnova:
d8:announce40:http://suprnova.dyndns.or g:6969/anno unce7:comment76:Matrix Reloaded - single CD - DivX Telesync - 576 x 252 - very good quality!13:creation datei1053692711e4:infod5:filesld6:lengthi10313728e 4:pathl29:Matrix.Revolutions.Teaser.avieed6:length i1542e4:pathl38:The.Matrix.Reloaded.DivX.TS-DaDuck .NFOeed6:lengthi8943616e4:pathl45:The.Matrix.Reloa ded.DivX.TS-DaDuck.Sample.avieed6:lengthi711053312 e4:pathl38:The.Matrix.Reloaded.DivX.TS-DaDuck.avie ee4:name34:The.Matrix.Reloaded.DivX.TS-DaDuck12:pi ece lengthi524288e6:pieces27860:
Seems to me you could also go after dyndns.org with a court order to have them to give you control of the suprnova account. Of course, their AUP forbids 'illegal' use of dyndns.org accounts:
12. MEMBER CONDUCT
The Member is solely responsible for the contents of his/her usage of the Service. The Member's use of the Service is subject to all applicable local, state, federal, and international laws and regulations. The Member agrees: (1) to comply with all local, state, and federal laws regarding the transmission of technical data exported from the United States through the service; (2) not to use the Service for illegal purposes;
In fact, looks like someone already got to dyndns.org or perhaps the suprnova account owner didn't want any trouble or their IP address revealed:

Re:Slashdotting of BitTorrent
I like BitTorrent a lot, I've been using it to grab Alias episodes the last few days. I've never watched the show, but now that my TiVo is starting to look pretty empty, a co-worker convinced me to start watching Alias. So far, I like it, and there's a great BitTorrent listing here:

The torrent creation guide relies on the stock completedir; bleh... a much better replacement is MakeTorrent. Currently it's an enhanced/modified completedir (sources are available, so you can use it under *nix), but I'm working on a complete rewrite. There are guides here and here.
I'm also developing an alternative client, and many people prefer the interface to the stock one.. it's called burst! (front-end is released GPL, back-end currently still relies on the python code which is MIT). -

Re:I'm mirroring the entire site now for the torre
Basically, what you have to do, is create the torrent and then "download it" over the files... Bittorrent will realize the files are complete, and it will seed without downloading obviously...
I haven't found any linux software to generate the torrents...
You can use MakeTorrent for windows...

Re:Mac processor upgrades
Overpriced processor upgrades have a long and rich tradition on Macs.
True, but for a good reason: Mac owners tend to get kinda attached to their machines. A CPU upgrade is often the "path of least resistance"; keep the same Mac, same peripherals, same system environment, just speed it up. And it's still cheaper than a new Mac.
I did this myself a few years ago, and didn't regret it at all. Read all about it here if you'd like.

Re:Real world? fractals
The first thing I thought when I saw this article was, "sounds like this guy has discovered fractals". What he's describing would appear (from the limited information provided) to be a fractal equation. It will be interesting to see how easily it is incorporated into Fractint. Fractint currently has about 70 or so different types of fractals that you can tweak, play with, and zoom into to your heart's content.
There is a lot of cool art on the fractint homepage as well as come descriptive information about fractint and the history of the program, which is currently on version 20.0. I've been playing with the program off and on for about 8 years I guess, and think it is the best fractal generator out there.
For those of you not running DOS, try XFractint. The program has a funky install (imo) but works.
What appears to be 'news' about the discovery mentioned above is that the equation is supposed to generate pictures related to 'natural' shapes. I don't really see it so much as being news, as many have noticed that most natural objects have a fractal dimension to them. Trees are the most obvious example. One of the fractals that Fractint will generate is a cool picture of a fern leaf. If you choose type=ifs, and fern for the IFS subtype, you should be able to display it.
Someday, someone is going to find the correct fractal equation for the universe itself. It will probably be about 50 or so characters long. The physicists(sp?) of the world will look at that, then at the huge volumes they use to attempt to describe quantum mechanics, and say "Doh!"

Re:Apache Problems
Yes, there is a solution out there. Basically you need to restore the previous version of libssl.so This will get your webserver up and running again, but it will still have the RSA keysnoop vulnerability. So use at your own risk!
You can find the old libssl.so at two places:
http://ganter.dyndns.org/misc/apple_ssl.php
http://www.zippy6.net/misc/
You have Thomas Ganter to thank for this solution. It was first published on the Apple discussion site, and I mirrored it on my webserver (just to keep Ganter's site from being slasdotted). -
Re:Why I just switched from Gentoo to Debianthere are four other kernels, btw, did you check into one of those? Did you have trouble with the default kernel? The process priorities problem was exceedingly rare.
I've been trying several kernels as the development focuses them (gentoo-sources, lolo-sources, I don't know the details about the process priorities bug, even if is unrelated the fact is that doing things with nice -19 (such as emerging a packaged), almost took the machine to a halt - now I can compile a package without that hapening, so it must be a problem in gentoo somewhere. Anyway, this isn't bugs.gentoo.org to write a bug report...
I've also never broken my userland to the extent that I require a reinstall; did you read the part about Gentoo being for power users and being a learning platform? Yeah, if you're coming from RedHat, obviously you're going to screw it up. That's no problem. But be patient until you learn how Linux works, that's what you're there for isn't it?Ah! Ah! Ah!.... Oooohh... People are so funny (not to mention ridiculous) when they put labels on someone just because he use(s/d) distro A or B.
I always hear people saying "I use Debian because I just want to get work done" but something about it just doesn't ring true. Apt is a fantastic package manager I grant you, but whenever I install Debian I do without debconf. I know what I'm doing, thanks.Don't see the point of that...
So from my perspective the main thing I'm concerned with is packages. Are they up to date? Are userland packages like KDE or X released promptly when there are new versions? The answer is an unfortunate no. The stable branch of Debian refuses to merge new versions in a dynamic way, instead insisting that stable is stable and you must use unstable to get the latest. They are released prompt enough for me. And the packages I need the most for my work like Numeric Python, ATLAS, subversion have much more recent versions and better integration and packaging in debian than in portage. It is a fact that many people in my line of activity (engineering research) use debian. If I spent all my day using KDE/Gentoo applications as you seem to do, I'd probably agree with you.
So here I am having to either move to an unstable branch of Debian, which I've seen break before, or add all kinds of third party repositories (Can you say UNTRUSTED SOFTWARE) to my sources.list. What happened to just wanting to get work done?Didn't you ever downloaded an unofficial ebuild from foruns.gentoo.org? I actually think that portage should allow having seperate repositories such as sources.list, because the current gentoo developers can't cope (or are not interested in coping) with all the potential packages (I had/have bug reports on bugs.gentoo.org of many months). BTW, all unofficial repositories I use on debian happen to be provided by official debian developers.
Things do get broken on unstable, but no more than they do on gentoo, and with the bonus that everytime they try to get xfree86/gcc/binutils package right, you don't have to recompile it over and over again.
Again, I don't defend that Debian is the holy grail of linux distributions, not only because such holy grail doesn't exists (every distro is suited for a certain purpose), but because I know that tomorrow I'll change distro again. After all, one great thing with linux/unix is that usually it oesn't take more than 1-2days to swith a distro and have everything as before since the most important part - your home dir - doesn't even need to be touched.

Holy crap, my software got mentioned on /. !!!
Yeah, it's buried way down in the body of the article, but it's still there. w00t! I'm the guy that wrote TorrentSpy. The web site that the link points to is running on my PC at home on cable 'net access. 300 hits in 3 hours. Not too bad so far, I guess. My gf is gonna kill me if I get slashdotted, tho. There are worse ways to go, I guess
...
I've had several people express interest in an *nix version of TSpy. It's written in Delphi, which theoretically means it shouldn't be too hard to port over to Kylix. If anyone has Kylix experience and would like to help out, feel free to contact me at the email on my web site.
I'm gonna go tail -f my log file and listen to my network bog down. -
Re:Why WOULD you use classes and objects?
I'm working on converting my web site from straight HTML to PHP + XML, to ease the pain of future changes. My thinking is, as long as I preserve all the data I think is important in XML, I should be about to output it however I want. I'm going OO with this.
One object type I have is a "renderer". Its job is to output my data in whichever form I ask.
Here are three different renderers operating on the same data:
Old, new, RSS.
I also have Parser object that uses the Expat PHP interface, objects for news items and links, etc. To me, this form of organization makes sense. It helps me centralize information, and prevents stupid mistakes like putting a news item inside a paragraph. It also supports "programming-by-difference"-- most of the methods in the "old" renderer are also part of the "new" renderer, but wherever I need to, I can change the "new" renderer freely. The RSS renderer, on the other hand, is based on the "blank" renderer, so it defaults to doing nothing. Of course, YMMV. -

Re:other patterns in prime numbers
I'd be interested in knowing if anyone has attempted to plot this as a fractal?
BTW: there is a linux version of Fractint available. WooHoo!
I remember waiting over 60 hours for a single screen to draw on some of the deep zooms of the Mandlebrot set when I was running a SOTA 33 Mhz 386. Timothy Leary would not have survived the 60s if he'd had a copy of Fractint and something to run it on at the time

I posted a trackback in response to Dave's assertation that tabs are scalable. I simply don't believe that they are, in fact prior to his article about tabs, scalability was one of the main weaknesses I would bring up in discussions about tabs -- it's not the main weakness, just one of them.
