Re:Where there's a will...
I'll agree to some extent: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/5/23/
For me though, one of the biggest helpers in making sure I get a wide variety of genres is the mod community. I play Half-Life and Half-Life 2 mods quite a bit, and I get everything from ultra-realism "one-shot-one-kill" in Insurgency and Resistance and Liberation to hilarious adventures in bayoneting with The Battlegrounds (seriously, this mod is fun), to unrealistic sci-fi (in that "limited by only the imagination of the developers" scene) brought by Dystopia.
I haven't found the need to buy any games in the past several years for the sake of entering a new genre; the third-party mod community has me taken care of.

Dystopia Please!
Far far better than the other mods. Nuff said.

Re:Not that bad...Given that mods are pretty much dead (or at least not where they once were) it is good to see that people are still playing around with Valve's Source SDK
Anyone here in Slashdot who is interested in good source-mods should definetly check out a free mod called Dystopia. IMO it's the best multiplayer mod for the Source engine ATM. Although it is (as usual for multiplayer games) an FPS-game it's not just plain shooting, because it involves another dimension: Cyberspace, it's a sort of level-in-level thing, each level has the so called "meatspace", where the futuristic punks battle against corporation-troops, and cyberspace, where hackers must try to accomplish different objectivers like disable/enable security turrets etc.
It's a fun mod when you learn to play, which doesn't take that long (the game comes with a tutorial) and I recomend it for anyone interested in Cyberpunk-genre/good FPS-games. Dystopia has an inbuilt rank-system, and the lowest ranks at the time are above 10 000, but the mod has only a couple hundred active players so it could use more.
(DISCLAIMER: I have nothing to do with the developers/development of the game). -
DystopiaFor everyone interested in a Shadowrun-esque FPS, you should try out the Dystopia Half-life2 Source Mod. It's free if you have the Source SDK, and it's extremely polished and a blast to play. In my opinion, it's pretty much everything the Shadowrun FPS wanted to be, but better. To quote the overview page: Dystopia places the player into tense combat situations in a high tech world spanned by computer networks. As either Punk Mercenaries or Corporate Security Forces the player will fight through the physical world to gain access, via jack-in terminals, to cyberspace.
Cyberspace is a three dimensional representation of the world's network. Inside cyberspace, players will launch programs to hack into systems linked to the physical world while fighting off enemy hackers and defending critical systems. Gameplay progresses through inter-linked physical and cyberspace objectives, some are completed in either the physical world or cyberspace, others only by a well timed combination of the two.
Whether the player is a heavily augmented combat mercenary armed to the teeth with the latest in firepower, or a twitch reflex cyberdecker racing to infiltrate a cyberspace node; they'll be immersed in an action packed battle. Only through skillful use of the high tech arsenal we're making available and intelligent team play will players truly jack-in and kick ass. Check out the trailer here
In case you're wondering, I'm just an enthusiastic fan who is interested in having more people to play with. If you like Shadowrun, download and come play! -

Re:A New Mech Warrior or Shadowrun MMO?
Having never "seen" a Shadowrun style hacking, I don't know if this is similar or not. But if you've ever played the Dystopia mod for the Source games, that has one of the best "hacking" setups I've run into.
Shadowrun/Mechwarior/Crimson Sky games all sound as if they would be better as massivily multiplayer FPS's as opposed to the current MMO crop that is primarly RPG with mock FPS stylings added on top. -
Moar Maps!!
I want more maps
.. or even perhaps a good SDK so other modders can make good maps / etc.
Better yet, get the Dystopia team into Valveworld ... http://www.dystopia-game.com/ -- heck Dystopia is probably a better put together game than either CS or DOD were (considering they were mods at one time). Some bugs, yes, but CS and DOD were (and sometimes still are) buggy as hell..
Oh, and for the obligatory Portal joke ..
Check out what happens when you're NOT playing in Portal ..

Dystopia
Dystopia, a Half-Life 2 mod, developed a statistics server that collected information on in-game beta testing they conducted with their world-wide fan base. They used e.g. rates of damage inflicted in the beta tests to balance the new weapons they implemented between beta 4 and their release candidate. There's a very good interview right at the top of the Dystopia main page that discusses the weapon balancing in some depth.
If mod developers relying on volunteers can use statistical analysis, its pretty much applicable to anyone. -
Try Dystopia
Here's my current FPS fix:
http://www.dystopia-game.com/
Cyber-punk world. Assault a corporate office building with your team of mercenaries, escort your decker to a jack-in-point. Guard him while he battles in cyber-space to disable security systems, then advance to complete your objectives.
Or, if you're dressed in corporate blue... stop the punk mercs cold in their tracks. -
Dystopia
At this point in time, I'd trust the Dystopia mod for HL2 to give me a better interpretation of Shadowrun than Microsoft will.

Update Released.Update released for the demo, fixes many bugs etc, check the website http://dystopia-game.com/

Dystopia, my take.
I downloaded Dystopia around the hour it came out, and jumped into a server as soon as one with an empty slot became available. While it doesn't have a unique concept, it's a fairly decent mod, so far.
Releasing this as a demo may have been a mistake for the team, since there are a bit of "known issues" that cause the game to crash, or just slightly inconvenience people. In the day or so I've had it, the mod has crashed no less than eight times. Perhaps they should have called it a "public beta" instead. Another interesting issue I had come across was a server on which the doors on the level had more kills than the players.
Teamplay, like on most internet games, is hit or miss. When you've got a good team that's working together, it's awesome. When you have a bunch of idiots that are doing things like monopolizing the hack points without knowing what they're doing, it's infuriating.
The following forum post on their site, here, gives me an uneasy feeling. I don't think the game merits a retail release, and fear if they license the Source engine it will be doomed to failure instead of being an enjoyable mod for anyone to enjoy. Most people I've talked to on servers do not forsee Dystopia being worth buying if it is not released as a free modification.
Is Dystopia good? Yes. Can it be a lot of fun? Most certainly. But it has its problems which I hope can be hammered out between now and its "real" release.
